Reconciliation Forum: The Narrative of Muslim America
This past Saturday May 22 in Taper Hall at USC,
was a
revival of relationships between communities. Dr. Maher Hathout and Imam
Saadiq
Saafir engaged in conversation with Tayyibah Taylor, alongside of Nagwa
Ibrahim
and Su'ad A. Khabeer.
This panel of speakers addressed the topic of
"Race,
Media and Community" expressing wisdom, strategy and concerns that are
affecting the identity of Muslims across various communities. This was
Imam
Saadiq Saafir's first public engagement outside of Humanitarian Day, him
with Dr. Hathout relating a 30 plus year relationship between each and
other,
delivering insight in furthering community relations. Nagwa and Su'ad
spoke on misrepresentation of Muslims in movies and new laws that do not
favor
Islam or Muslims.
The Narrative of Muslim America™ platform will
engage controversial topics and highlighting the intellect of Muslim
American leaders,
educating audiences with firsthand accounts of our combined indigenous
narratives.
We would like to the audience and all the speakers such as Imam Ameen
Omar with
his inspirational talk and organizers MPAC, MANA and USC's CRCC for
allowing the ILM Foundation to plan and participate among a
distinguished group.

Imam Saadiq Saafir
Founder, ILM Foundation
The Quran reminds us that treating each other with generosity is a
divine and social right we have upon each other. Prophet Muhammad (saw) compensated the
social stigma attached those less fortunate, by directing his generosity
toward them. He would meet, eat, work and pray with those less
fortunate. So generosity must be viewed as a pillar of effective
social activism, a way of gaining Allah's pleasure and fostering a greater level of intimacy among member of the community.

American
Muslim Civic Leadership Institute
Within ILM
Foundation's philosophy, motivations are re-enforced frequently between
staff
members. "The Reward is tied to the work" is one always
mentioned, "hard
work initiates recognition that opens opportunities."
In March 2010
Associate
Director, Umar A Hakim, became an alumnus of the American Muslim
Civic
Leadership Institute (AMCLI); a leadership program based at the
University of Southern California. In 2009 Naim Shah Jr., Director of ILM, also graduated from the AMCLI program. Umar Hakim was selected through a due process resulting in 22 distinct
fellows from various backgrounds relating to civic engagement and/ or
community activism for a 6 month course of personal development.
These
fellows
received training from accredited academia and institutions focusing on
engagement, leadership and vision. Umar A Hakim says, "I am very
thankful for
the rewards of this achievement with AMCLI and encourage more
individuals to
become involved, Teaching Life Skills to replace Social Ills and I'm an
example
- thank you." |
NewGround Muslim Jewish Dialogue
ILM has
always engaged education, meetings and events for intra and interfaith
development. We recently joined the fellowship of NewGround "A Muslim-
Jewish
Partnership for Change" a project facilitated by Muslim Policy Affairs
Council
(MPAC) and Progressive Jewish Alliance (PJA) approaching a delicate
climate of
distrust for new beginnings.
Umar Hakim, ILM Associate Director during a meeting
Muslims and Jews within this unique social
project
are dialoging to learn historic narratives and develop conflict
transformation
skills creating a voice that detest injustice; where ever inequity
exists. "We
are continuing the work of Imam Saadiq Saafir, now in more sensitive
times;
times that requires more patience in bettering relations." We reach back
to
organizations and people who reach out and will demonstrate with
NewGround a
more ethical religious behavior that will serve the public's best
interest. http://newgroundproject.weebly.com |
ILM Intern to Youth Community Leader
Khadijah Abdul-Aleem, ILM Youth Community Outreach Director, has been selected to
participate in the very
highly competitive Bank of America Student
Leaders Program. From the Los Angeles market, 354 junior and senior high school students applied and 10 were are selected to receive
an 8 week paid internship.
They
also go on an all-expenses paid 6 day
trip to Washington, DC, to participate in a Youth Leadership Summit. She
has
also just finished the Bridging Communities program (hosted by
CAIR
and JACL), which brought together young Muslims and Japanese Americans
in order to "build bridges" and learn more about one another, as their
people have both been labeled with the "face of the enemy" at one time
or another in US history. Visit the blog at http://khadibcp.wordpress.com
