Namibia's Swakopmund celebrates 120 Years!
The town of Swakopmund was founded in 1892 by Kurt Von Francois as a harbour for the German Colony. Walvis Bay which is a natural deep water harbour was in British hands, so the German colony needed their own harbour. This spot was chosen since the Swakopmund River was the only place with fresh water.
Swakopmund became the main import harbour. The discovery of Uranium nearby boosted the economy and the mine has become the largest open-cast uranium mine in the world.
After Namibia's independence in 1990, tourism grew steadily and Swakopmund became a popular tourist destination.
Today, Swakopmund hosts a wide range of accommodation establishments from top of the range hotels and guest houses, to back-packer hostels.
The town is also known for its restaurants and cafés.
The Crystal Gallery, Karakul carpet weavers, museum, art galleries as well as street markets are popular attractions.
