Destination of the Month  -  Galapagos Archipelago
as featured on TV - Channel M

The Galapagos Islands are unique. Consisting of 13 larger islands, and many smaller ones, the archipelago is home to a most amazing collection of plants and wildlife - some species here are found nowhere else on earth. Having been isolated for millions of years from the mainland, the wildlife on these remote islands have little intrinsic fear of man.

The Galapagos Islands, also known as 'The Enchanted Islands' are named after the Galapagos tortoises. These volcanic islands originated 6 million years ago and are situated around the equator, about 1000 km west of continental Ecuador.

The islands are famed for their vast number of endemic species and the studies by Charles Darwin during the 1835 voyage of the Beagle that contributed to the inception of Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection.

The favorite time to travel is May/June and October/November. December to May is the dry season, with calmer seas.

Ecuador -  a Region of Startling Contrasts!

At just half the size of France, with over 10% of all living species of plant and animal and 50 different ecosystems; with the world's highest volcanoes and 13 different cultural groups, Ecuador is one of the world's most diverse countries.

Ecuador's history dates back to 20,000 BC, traces of which can be found in archaeological sites located all across Ecuador. Once part of the Inca Empire, Ecuador came under Spanish rule in 1533 and gained independence in 1822.

The Andes mountain range divides the country into four perfectly defined regions: the high lands, Pacific coast, Amazon basin and the Galápagos Islands, offering distinct fauna and flora in various climate zones.
