Destination of the Month  -  Eastern Cape, South  Africa
as featured on TV - Channel 8 in Metro Vancouver, Channel 10 on Vancouver Island, B.C.

RR Lion The Eastern Cape region of South Africa stretches along the south-east coast from the Tsitsikamma Forest on the Garden Route to the Wild Coast. In the hinterland, the Great Karoo epitomises the essence of Africa - vast open spaces; sparse veld bushes and distant brooding mountains.

Scattered about in the foothills and beyond, Xhosa homesteads -circular and thatched- are often situated on the ridge of a hill. Port Elizabeth, "the Friendly City" is the largest city on the coast between Cape Town and Durban. More...

Here you can view the 'Big Five' (seven if you include whales and the Great White Shark) in a malaria-free game area, with safari options ranging from world-class deluxe reserves to hands-on volunteering opportunities. Click here for details

Spotlight on Mpumalanga - Safari capital of South Africa

With much of the Kruger National Park in the province, and many private reserves, there is something for everyone.
The "Greater Kruger Park" includes the Private Reserves adjoining the Kruger National Park on its western borders. There are no fences between the Kruger Park and these Reserves, hence the name "Greater Kruger Park". Accommodation in the Kruger Park ranges from clean campsites to very comfortable lodges. The private reserves are almost all very luxurious.
The Lowveld is hot and humid, with long grass and broad-leaved trees, and of course, spectacular game.
RoyalHotelPilgrimsRestThe Highveld - higher, obviously, and also much cooler - is on the northern Drakensberg and consists of rolling grassland with many wild flowers and pretty streams and pockets of indigenous forest. Troutfishing is popular around Dullstroom and Lydenberg.
The museum town of Pilgrim's Rest gives an indication of the way of life during the gold rush era, when lawlessness was the order of the day and brave pioneers wandered through lion-infested bush to reach their claims.
The scenery is spectacular - there is God's Window, Bourke's Luck Potholes in the Blyde River, the quaint town of Graskop, the numerous spectacular waterfalls, the Three Rondawels (three almost circular mountains), the Swadini Dam and the 300 million year old Sudwala Caves.
3RondawelsThe main town is Nelspruit which, along with the many small towns, serves the tourist industry and the many farmers who grow delicious sub-tropical products, such as bananas, citrus fruit, litchis, mangoes, avocados, macadamia nuts, pecan nuts and tea and coffee.

XmasGreet Hi Chris, just a short note to say thank you so much for booking our wonderful trip, it was absolutely fantastic. We did some great excursions when we were on shore and the ship was perfect for our needs.

Thank you also for the lovely ticket and itinerary package you made up for all of us.

We would like to recommend you to friends of ours who are thinking of doing the same trip, if that is ok with you.

..travellers departing from most U.K. airports, including London Heathrow, can now carry-on 2 pieces again. Details at www.baa.co.uk

..Lufthansa's Vancouver passengers can now check-in online as of 23 hours before the flight. At the airport drop off your luggage up to 45 minutes prior to departure time. A great time saver!

..if you are looking for more info on climate change the 'ABC of Carbon' by Ken Hickson is a new book that clearly spells out how carbon can be our friend, not foe.

Air Travel. Some would say it is the responsibility of air travellers to take account of the carbon costs of their flights..

Boats. Carbon dioxide emissions from shipping are double those from aviation..

Coconut. Yes, it is true, there is carbon stored in the husks of coconuts..

TravelBoecker supports Hoops 4 Hope
Hoops4HopeHoops4Hope provide basic tools to play team sports for children between 9-16 that live in townships and shanty towns of South Africa.  By building basketball courts, distributing athletic equipment and organizing tournaments they provide children with a safe, nurturing environment in which they may develop other life skills too.

On Feb 2nd & 3rd Hoops4Hope will be in Surrey, B.C. collecting used runners, basketball shoes, soccer cleats and team sets of uniforms bound for the children in South Africa. They will also hold a silent auction & sell hot dogs to raise funds and they could really use your support.

"Hoop building is the foundation of what we do - it gets local people involved and provides an outlet for kids to do what they do best - play!"
