FPS Teams Prepare for State Bowl

Once again, our Future Problem Solving teams join the "Ranks of Royalty" by earning gold and silverFPSPI for their work on the practice problem related to the topic "Coral Reefs." Students will now tackle the qualifying topic, "Human Rights," in preparation for the State Bowl, held this April in Banner Elk.

To help students better understand the topic, Mr. Yodice has graciously offered his time to discuss human rights as it pertains to culture, religion and politic traditions, globalization and migration, technology and privacy, the death penalty, and terrorism.

Teams now have only two more weeks to prepare for their human rights challenge problem before moving on to "Trade Barriers," the topic for this year's State Bowl.

At last year's State Bowl, our middle division team took second place, while our junior division teams took first and third place. Our first place team went on to participate in the International Tournament, competing against teams from all over the world including Australia, New Zealand, Britain, Singapore, and China.

Fencing Begins This Week

Our second session of fencing begins Wednesday, February 1. This session, which is open to 3rd and 4th graders, will run for six weeks. Cost is $100.

Click here for registration forms, which are also on the website under Documents.

We will hold a combined Beginner I class and a Beginner II class (for those students who were fencing with us this fall) from 3:30 - 4:30 p.m. each Wednesday through March 7.

Attention 2nd - 4th Grade Students

Are you interested in playing soccer?  Are you interested in learning the skills used in soccer?

Our athletics program is offering a junior soccer session for any student in grades 2 to 4.

All levels of experience (or inexperience) are welcome. There is no cost for this session. Sneakers are the only equipment required to take part.

Led by our very own varsity head soccer coach, John Watkins, at Renaissance Park off of Tyvola Road, the one hour sessions will be held Thursdays after school (3:30 - 4:30 p.m.) from February 16 through March 22. We will need parents to volunteer to help with carpool and to help monitor the children on the field as well.

If your child is interested, please email

Athletic Director Noelle Zagorski at  nzagorski@scholarsacademy.org.  Please be sure to include your child's full name, grade and homeroom teacher within your email.
