Over the holidays,
our family had dinner at a nice restaurant near Washington, D.C. Seated near us was a family of five: mom, dad, a teenager (about age 14), a preteen (about 11), and a child (about 8). The entire time they were at the restaurant, even while they were eating, the children were plugged into their individual electronics, and the parents were continually looking at or using their phones. Isn't there something wrong with this picture? Have we lost something here? Or is it just me being curmudgeonly?
Since September, students in grades 4 through 8, (Investigators II - Apprentice Scholars III) have been working on research projects in preparation for the annual Scholars' Academy Science Fair. This event showcases science and math skills integrated with original research. Parents are invited to view the projects on Monday evening, January 23, from 6:00 - 7:00 p.m. in the school gym.
Congratulations to Nicholas Lowell, the winner of the Scholars' Academy Geography Bee. Runner-up was Michael Yang. Nicholas completes a written exam with the prospect of the N.C. Geography Bee as his next stop in the competition.
Finally, looking ahead, we will be offering a weeklong summer program at the Scholars' Academy the week of June 18. More details will follow next week.

Marie Peine, Ph.D., Director

Coaches Needed for Spring Sports

I am currently getting ready for the spring athletic season but still need coaches for both tennis and golf.
For tennis, I am in need of an assistant coach. If you are interested in helping Coach Brian Granger, please let me know as soon as possible.
For golf, I am still in need of coaches. I currently have someone who is interested in helping out with golf but is not able to be at every practice or game. If someone else is willing to share the responsibility with this person, that would work as well.
In order to continue our spring sports programs, we need coaches to run them. I want to make every sport opportunity available to our children. Please consider taking the time and helping our kids succeed at a sport they enjoy playing.
If you are interested in coaching, please contact Noelle Zagorski at nzagorski@scholarsacademy.org.
