  Dr. Peine's Pen
Hail 2012!

Greetings in the new year. Had enough football yet? Holiday treats all gone? What would it be like if the school year ended with the calendar year, and everything began again in January? An idle thought, but interesting considering we are nearly halfway through the academic year, but just beginning 2012. The new year brings the first reports of competition results.

American Mathematics Competition (AMC 8):

Top scorer at the Scholars' Academy and in Apprentice Scholars III - Auston Li.

Other top scorers: Apprentice Scholars II -

Ronak Bhagia; Apprentice Scholars I -  Colin Stewart; Investigators III - Sagan Gor.

Also receiving recognition for high scores: Apprentice Scholars III - Alice Liu, Nicholas Lowell, and Apolinaire Brown; Apprentice Scholars II -

Michael Yang and Claire Liu; Apprentice

Scholars I - Peter Huffman, Quin McClung, and Rhea Bhagia.

Scholars' Academy Spelling Bee

Auston Li was our winning speller and will represent the school at the Regional Charter School Spelling Bee, which will be held at our school on January 13. Saajan Patel was our runner-up speller. We were spelling for nearly 15 rounds of words - a good spell-off.

In all, eleven students participated in our school spelling bee: Investigators I -  Nathan Daino and Meghan Williams; Investigators II - Ruta Petrikis and Ife Onasanya; Investigators III - Trevor Pitts and Kaylee Schwanke; Apprentice Scholars I -

Saajan Patel and Rushil Shah; Apprentice Scholars II - Ronak Bhagia and Michael Williams;

Apprentice Scholars III - Auston Li.

MATHCOUNTS

The team members representing the Scholars' Academy at the regional MATHCOUNTS competition at UNCC in February are:

Auston Li, Alice Liu, Claire Liu, and Ronak Bhagia.

Our individual competitors will be Nicholas Lowell, Rajan Tayal, Michael Yang, Trevor Daino, Kyle Mitchell, and Nadia Ekezue. Congratulations to all of our excellent competitors.

Tuesday Tours at Ten began Tuesday, January 3. The tours are really mini open houses that provide an opportunity for prospective parents to visit the school. Usually, they have just learned about the school or were unable to attend one of our admissions open houses. If you happen to be around the school on Tuesday at 10:00 a.m., we invite you to join us for one of these tours and provide a parent perspective about the school. The tours usually last about an hour and a half.

Director Search Update

We had a strong response to the online survey in December. Thank you to all the parents, friends,77 Center Drive Facility and employees who took a moment to complete the survey and share their thoughts on the qualifications, experience, and leadership characteristics the next Executive Director needs to possess.

As the New Year begins, our search for a new Executive Director is well underway. Coleman Lew has already begun to identify several individuals who meet our qualifications. These individuals will go through an in-depth interview process with the search firm before they will be presented to our search committee. In addition to having a strong background and leadership qualities, we are looking for an individual who understands our school culture and believes in our mission.

In the coming weeks, we hope to be in a position to review interested and qualified candidates with Coleman Lew. All sourcing and recruiting efforts will continue until we have identified a final group of candidates for on-site interviews. For more information on Coleman Lew, please visit their website at www.colemanlew.com

The 8th grade class would like to thank everyone for participating in its Candy Cane Fundraiser.

We were totally overwhelmed as to what we were getting ourselves into. We tagged about 830 candy canes in three days, netting over $400 for our trip to Washington, D.C.

A special thanks to Ms. Roberson, Mr. Yodice, Mrs. Beth Gage, and Mrs. Patty Watkins for helping us with this fundraising opportunity.

Spring Athletics Information

Tennis Informational Meeting

If your child is in grades 5 - 8 and is interested in playing for our tennis team this year, we invite you to attend our informational meeting on Monday, January 9 at 3:30 p.m. in Mr. Yodice's classroom. Our head coach, Brian Granger, will take this time to inform parents and prospective players about what to expect during tryouts and for the season.

Basketball Team/Individual Photos

The boys' basketball team will be taking team/individual photos on Tuesday, January 10 during their regularly scheduled practice. The girls' basketball team will be taking team/individual photos on Friday, January 27 during their regularly scheduled practice. Order forms will be sent home with your child the week of their picture date. Please make sure your child turns in their form to Mrs. Zagorski, the Athletic Director, on the day of their photos.

Coaches Needed

We are beginning to prepare for the spring season sports. At this time, we are in need of an assistantCoach tennis coach to help our head coach, Brian Granger.

We would also like to try to get our golf team going again this year. However, we are in need of both a head coach and an assistant coach. (We were not able to form a golf team last year because we did not have a coach.)

If you are interested in coaching either tennis or golf, please contact our

Athletic Director, Noelle Zagorski at nzagorski@scholarsacademy.org. Let's get our spring season off to a great start!
