Some Notes

A few topics to share with you have come across the desk as we move into December...

Flu Season is Here

Medications at school

ALL MEDICATIONS ARE TO BE SECURED

IN THE SCHOOL OFFICE. The Scholars' Academy policy concerning any type of medication at school requires that parents bring the medicines, whether prescription or over-the-counter, to the school office. Parents will indicate dosages to be given either from the prescription of a medical professional, or from the label on the container. It is a state regulation that students may not carry ANY medicines with them at school - not even cough drops. The regulation is for the safety of all the children in the school.

Fever/Attendance Guidelines

In order to return to school, your child  should be fever-free for 24 hours. Please do not send them to school if they have been feverish the previous evening. We see numerous children who "feel fine" in the morning, but have not met the 24 hour guideline, so they become ill at school in the afternoon. They will do much better at school if they are feeling 100% well.

Duke TIP

The information for the 4th/5th grade Duke Talent Identification Program is now available. We will have copies at the reception desk and in the PTO room. Parents may also register for the program online at www.TIP.DUKE.EDU/45GTS

Our school ID is 562891 - BC. The deadline for registration is March 1, 2012.

Myers Park High School

Any parents of 8th grade students who are interested in Myers Park High School should check with me for information packets prepared by the school for prospective families.

Fencing

We will begin our second session of fencing on February 1. This session will run for six weeks. Cost is $100. Click here for registration forms, which are also on the website. We will hold a combined Beginner I class and a Beginner II class (for those students who were fencing with us this fall) from 3:30 - 4:30 p.m. each Wednesday through March 7.

Night of the Notables

The Scholars' Academy Night of the Notables is scheduled for Tuesday, December 13 from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. More information to follow.

For the earth,

Marie Peine, Ph.D., Director
Scholars' a Strong Contender
for Clorox Grant - Keep Voting!

Scholars' Academy is now 23rd of the 1622 schools selected to be in the national Clorox grantPower A Bright Future logo 3 competition. Who would have imagined it? Greater still is that, if we all keep voting twice daily

(by text and online), meaning a minimum of

4 votes per family every day for the remaining 9 days of the competition, we will be:

a)  a Top 15 school in the competition

b)  a Top 5 school in our Create category

c)  a Top 3 charter school in the competition

d)  a Top 2 school in the south

e)  able to claim the highest votes-to-pupil          ratio of any school in the nation.

But what about the money? Well, there is a

$25,000 grant for the school the judges believe

most satisfies the following criteria:

  • Quality of Submission (33%);
  • Impact of Program on Children (33%); and
  • Fit to Contest Theme of Helping Children (34%).

If we hit the targets a) to e) above, we will have

a very good chance of being considered for the Judges' Award. That is why this has always been a marathon, and the reason we need to keep voting until the last day of the competition.

Please click this link now to vote online for Metrolina Regional Scholars' Academy.

Don't forget to text too: clorox7790 to 44144

You can vote once online AND once via text each day.

Visit, "like," and share the voting instructions at www.facebook.com/mrsa.friends.

Every vote counts, every voter counts, and every day counts.

Dr. Morris Conducts Honors
Band Clinic

On Saturday, November 19, Scholars' music instructor Dr. Donald Morris was one of six guestDr. Morris Conducts conductors at the Tri-State Middle School Honors Band Clinic hosted by Morehead State University in Morehead, Kentucky.

More than 600 students from middle school band programs in Kentucky, Virginia, West Virginia, and Ohio participated. From 9:00 a.m to noon, and again from 1:00 to 4:30 p.m., six bands of about ninety students each rehearsed music they had never seen before in preparation for a concert that evening for parents and friends.

Dr. Morris was on the faculty at Morehead State University during the 1995 - 1996 school year.

Scholars Join "Ranks of Royalty"

The middle school team and all three junior

FPSPI

teams from Scholars' Academy's

Future Problem Solving

Program (FPSP) earned their place among the FPSP

"2011 Ranks of Royalty."

After successfully tackling problems associated with a technologically dependent workforce set in the year 2043, our teams dominated the top spots with our middle school team taking 2nd place, two junior teams tying for 1st place, and our other junior team nabbing 2nd place.
