A Little History
Next week will be Thanksgiving break. The Thanksgiving holiday can be traced back to French settlers in Canada as early as 1606 and was referred to as The Order of Good Cheer to celebrate the harvest. The modern Thanksgiving holiday was celebrated in 1621 at Plymouth between the Wampanoag Native Americans and the Pilgrims. This date and location is often a subject of debate. In 1863, the states all began celebrating Thanksgiving on the same date, and in 1941 it was changed to the present date of the fourth Thursday in November.
No matter how or when you celebrate Thanksgiving, I hope it is a wonderful and safe time.
Food Drive
In addition to Thanksgiving, Scholars' Academy is collecting non-perishable items for our food drive. Our goal is to have every class donate 50 pounds of food for a local food bank. That would equate to 850 pounds of food! So clean out your pantries and stock up on items to donate. Thanks for helping those in need.
Picture Make-Up Day
Tomorrow (Tuesday, November 15) is picture make up/retake day, so please have your child dressed for pictures if they missed the first date. If they are having their picture retaken, be sure they bring the package you may have ordered with them to return to Classic Photo.
Lost and Found
We have many items in lost and found. Please have your child check for coats, hats, lunch boxes, etc. before the Thanksgiving holiday. All items left by November 21 will be donated.
Support Scholars' in Grant Competition
We are still competing in the Clorox competition to win $50,000 dollars to complete our stage with lighting and sound equipment. Please vote everyday at powerabrightfuture.com. We are currently in 31st place overall and 9th in the create category. We need to be in 1st place! Get your friends, neighbors, and strangers to vote. We have until December 9th to win this contest. It only takes 1 minute a day. Thank you to all of the parents who are coordinating this event.

practice compassion." ~Dalai Lama

Your Votes Could Mean
$50,000 for Our School
Today is Day 24 of 48 in the race for the
$50,000 Power A Bright Future Grant. Thanks to everyone who is voting for us and spreading the word, Scholar's Academy has become:
- 1st in Charlotte
- 2nd in North Carolina
- (up 2 spots)
- 9th in the Create category (up 3 spots) ($25,000 grant)
- 31st overall out of more than 1600 schools nationwide (up 29 spots in 2 weeks!) ($50,000 grant)
If we can get 900 votes by the end of today, we should be able to overtake our only competition in the state and become 8th in our Category.
BUT IT CAN'T STOP THERE. We have risen every day in the national rankings, but our pace must be more than one position per day or we will just narrowly miss the prize money. If everyone takes that extra step and votes EVERY DAY until the competition ends on December 9, we can be where Scholars' Academy should be: #1!
If you have not done so yet, ask your family, friends, neighbors, and co-workers for their votes. Every member of our community needs to vote TWICE, vote EVERY DAY, and get new voters. Together, we CAN do this!
Please click this link now to vote online for Metrolina Regional Scholars' Academy. Bookmark the page to make it easy to vote everyday. If you are having trouble registering, enter your phone number with NO DASHES.
Don't forget to text too: clorox7790 to 44144
You can vote once online AND once via text each day.
Every vote counts, every voter counts, and every day counts.

Food Drive for Loaves and Fishes This Week
Loaves and Fishes is a nonprofit network of emergency food pantries that provides food directly to hungry people in Mecklenburg County.
Starting today, each homeroom will have a collection box outside their door where you
can drop off your donation of food. The drive will run from Monday, November 14 through Friday, November 18.
At the end of the week, donations will be tallied and each homeroom that collects at least 50 pounds of food will earn extra recess time! Teachers can choose from two extra 15 minute recesses or one 30 minute recess. (Don't worry teachers, give us some advance notice when you want your students to enjoy their extra time and we will provide you with some coverage so you earn extra time off, too!)
Donations can be any nonperishable and commercially prepared food. Priority needs are canned meat, canned pasta (SpaghettiOs, ravioli, etc.) cereal, canned fruit, and 100% juice (for safety, no glass please).
If each homeroom collects at least 50 pounds, that would equal 850 pounds of food. Let's show how much Scholars' Academy cares about our neighbors in need.
