Mrs. Cuneo's Comments
As the leaves are turning and a chill is in the air, first quarter for the 2011-2012 school year is coming to a close. It seems as if the school year has just begun, but it is very clear the students, staff and families of Scholars' Academy have been very busy these last 34 days. In addition to the many wonderful ways of learning taking place in the classrooms, a few other exciting activities have been going on during the first quarter. To name a few:
Orientation, field trips (Renaissance Festival, fire station, Carolina Raptor Center, Daniel Stowe Botanical Gardens, public library), Scholars' Academy k-5 library opening, Scholastic Book Fair, PTO Fall Social, teacher talks, chess club, Math Counts, Math Olympiad, Lego League, Junior Lego League, soccer, cross country, third and fourth grade intramural basketball, Capital Campaign, Academic Games, Science Olympiad, Future Problem Solving, parent/teacher conferences.
Whew! Did I say a few? It is never boring around here. I know the next quarter will be just as exciting. I hope your children are sharing with you their adventures of the school day.

Athletics Department Grows
with School
The Scholars' Academy sports program was born over breakfast and coffee in the spring of 2006. Parent and current Scholars' soccer coach John Watkins, along with two other parents, talked about how Scholars' should have an athletics program. Coach Watkins and Dr. Peine sat down for a discussion that lead Coach Watkins on a fact-finding mission. He eventually made contact with Nick Nichols, the current president of the Charlotte-Gastonia Athletic Association (CGAA), of which we are a part. The original feeling was apprehensive, with the worry being that Scholars' couldn't compete with the other teams. In 2006, our first soccer team played its first game against Carolina International School. Our first home game occurred at the Endhaven location against the same CIS team. Golf was also added to that year's repertoire of sports.
Coach Watkins served as Scholars' first athletic director (2006 - 2008) and was also CGAA vice-president. In 2007, cross country and tennis were added. From 2008-2010, Bernie Kuebler was our physical education teacher/athletic director. During this period, we continued to compete with CGAA schools in cross country, soccer, golf and tennis. The league has been very pleased with our level of competition and participation.
In 2010, Noelle Zagorski became the physical education teacher and athletic director at the new Scholars' campus. (This year, Mrs. Zagorski also serves as CGAA Secretary.) Women's and men's basketball were added that year. We also began a cross country off-season program headed by our assistant cross country coach, Toni Hemming. This was a huge success and was opened to our rising 5th graders to prepare for this year's cross country team. We purchased new uniforms for all of the sports teams, provided photo opportunities for team/individual photos and had our first ever sports banquet thanks to our Booster Club. This year, we added a 3rd and 4th grade intramural basketball program to introduce students to the sport and work on necessary skills. The hope is to begin a soccer intramural program in the spring. With each new year, our athletics program continues to grow and competition continues to increase.
For information about games or the athletics program, please visit our redesigned athletic website on the Scholars' homepage under departments. For questions about our athletics program, please contact Noelle Zagorski at nzagorski@scholarsacademy.org.

Cross Country Team
Brings the Heat
As our runners take their places at the start line, one of our team members catches a runner from another school saying "That's the fast team." The XC Eagles have taken flight, earning a tie for 1st place and four consecutive 2nd place finishes. It's been an exciting season so far with some great results:
* Apolinaire Brown has taken 1st place in the last four meets recording an impressive 13:05 2.1 mile time.
* Sita Tayal has emerged as the second fastest female in the entire league comprised of 80 co-ed runners with a current time of 15:53.
* Several of our runners have placed in the top 25 including Apolinaire Brown (2/1/1/1/1), Kyle Mitchell (4/5/6), Sita Tayal (19/16/17), Auston Li (13/15/11), Artemas Brown (15/17), Evan Hemming (21/21), and Trevor Daino (23).
* Many of our new runners are achieving personal bests on the course, shaving up to two minutes off their times from the early season.
Stay tuned for the results of the final event, the XC Run-Off, scheduled for Monday, October 17, 4:15 p.m. at Frank Liske Park! Go XC Eagles!!
