When Fall is Here....
Fundraising is front and center. The final phase of our Gaining Ground Campaign kicked off on September 19. The financial commitments you make to the Scholars' Academy support the comprehensive program provided to our students. And make no mistake - we would not be able to offer the extensive selection of educational opportunities for your children if we did not do fundraising. It cannot be said often enough that we need your help to fund the nearly 20% of our fiscal needs that are not covered by state and local funding. Let's do some
BLUE RIBBON quality giving this year. The Scholars' Academy is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation, so all contributions are tax deductible. Pledges made during the fund drive are payable through June 30, 2012.
Fall Social fun is on schedule for Friday, October 7 from 3:30 - 6:30 p.m.The annual family event sponsored by the PTO provides opportunities for inflatables, snow cones, and even some games of skill for community members of all ages. Our annual Book Fair is also held during this week. Join us for the fun!
Student/Parent/Teacher Conferences are scheduled for Thursday, October 20 and Friday, October 21. Conferences begin at 12:15 p.m. each day. Classes will be in session for a half-day (11:25 a.m. dismissal) for students. If you wish to have a conference with any of our enrichment teachers, please call the school office to schedule a conference after 12:15 p.m. on October 20 or October 21.
Training for parents and community members
who wish to be substitute teachers will be held on Tuesday, October 11 at 8:30 a.m and 2:00 p.m. If you have previously had the training, please stop by at either of those times and indicate if you wish to be considered as a substitute for this year.
Fencing comes to the Scholars' Academy. After- school fencing classes will be offered at the Scholars' Academy for 3rd and 4th graders this fall. The sessions will be held in the gym on Wednesdays from 3:30 - 4:30 p.m. beginning November 2. The fee for the classes is $100 for the six-week session of introductory lessons. An application form and waiver are available at the Documents page on the website. The fee is due at the time of application and should be made payable to the Scholars' Academy.
For the earth,
Marie Peine, Ph.D., Director

Director Search Update
As the Scholars' Academy Board addresses the task of finding a new Director for the 2012-2013 school year, we are so proud of our recent Blue Ribbon recognition from the U.S. Department of Education and know this will only help in our recruitment process. It validates our commitment to academic achievement and our ability to accelerate student achievement in the classroom.
The Board plans to keep the school community informed of the search process through periodic updates. A search committee has been formed with seven members at present. In this group, parents, teachers, Board members and non-Board members are represented. Members of the search committee were selected based on recruiting, search and education experience, prior dedication to the progress of the school, and ability to commit time to the search. Ultimately, the hiring of the new Director is the Board's responsibility, and we take this responsibility very seriously. We are currently in the process of identifying and interviewing search firms to help conduct the search. Once retained, the search firm will provide a nationwide search for us. It will identify candidates and consider applicants who express interest through postings on various websites and with appropriate educational groups.
Thank you for your patience and
continued support.
Debbie Starling
Search Committee Chair, Board of Directors

New Instruments
for Music Department
Donations to the Resa L. Harris Memorial Fund, given in memory of the Honorable Resa L. Harris, have made it possible for the music department to purchase eight Orff instruments:
2 Glockenspiels,
2 soprano xylophones,
2 alto xylophones, 1 alto metallophone, and 1 bass xylophone. Although Resa's time with the Scholars' Academy was limited, she was a valuable member of our Board and an exemplary citizen of Charlotte.
According to Dr. Morris, he and Ms. Broome have been using the instruments quite a bit in their classes. "They are a great addition to our music instruction, allowing hands-on learning about music," he added. "Not only will the children enjoy these, but it will expand their musical knowledge and experiences, and since these will be used mostly by the younger students, it will make the entire music program better. It will be a wonderful way to honor the memory of Ms. Harris. Ms. Broome and I appreciate this more than we can say."
If you would like to add to this fund, please contact Debbie Starling at rstarling1@carolina.rr.com. Information regarding Resa Harris can be found in the following articles: Charlotte Observer Article and Resa LaVerne Harris.

Scholars' Library Update
The Scholars' Academy Library will officially open for business on Tuesday, October 11 and will be open every Tuesday for students in grades K-5. All students will visit the library with their homeroom class. If you have completed a library card application, your child's library card will be issued to his/her teacher. Still need the application? Contact Joanna Keel at keelfamily@carolina.rr.com.
A big thanks to all of the volunteers who helped make this library possible - it has taken over 1000 volunteer hours. Several student volunteers gave up some of their summer vacation to come in and help organize books (Emma Huneycutt, Eva Huneycutt, Grace Keel, Holden Keel, Anjeline Lynch, Aliyah Lynch, Emily Vespa, Lainey Vespa, and Lexie Vespa). Give them a big thank you if you see them - they worked for more than 100 hours!
Please note the following library check-out rules:
(1) Students will have a two week check-out period.
(2) No more than five books can be checked out at a time for a given student.
(3) Be sure to return only Scholars' Academy Library books to our library. Our library books have our school name printed on the barcode label and a Scholars' Academy address label on the back of each book.

Bravo, Scholars!
Kudos to Megan Brickner, Austin Li, Kyle Mitchell, Alec Probst and Rajan Tayal for providing child care for the Annual Campaign Parent night. This allowed parents to enjoy an interactive talk by Dr. Ishee on stress management for children, sponsored by the Development Committee.

Art By Me Fundraiser
This fall, our school will participate in a unique fundraising program that transforms your student's artwork into beautiful, professionally made products. This program is called Art by Me. Proceeds from Art by Me will be used to launch a ceramics program to give our talented art students the opportunity to create using clay. Students will not be creating original note-cards this year as we have done in the past.
Your student's creation will be sent to Art by Me, which will reproduce the artwork on a magnet that will be sent home to families to consider purchasing along with a catalog of over 40 affordable ($2.50 - $18) products that can be custom made with the same artwork. All products ordered will be sent home with your student before winter break. Families are not obligated to purchase the magnets or any of the products.
Thank you for consideration of support for adding ceramics to the Scholars' Academy art curriculum.
Mrs. Tans and Mrs. Atkins
