Ten Days

Wednesday, September 7 marked our 10th day of school for the 2011-2012 school year and our 12th year of operation as Metrolina Regional Scholars' Academy. We are off to our best beginning ever. There are 342 students enrolled at the Scholars' Academy with our largest classrooms in the Investigators II and III groups. Over the summer a fence was installed around the playground in front of the school, and our name is also at the top of the front entrance as well. We have managed the morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up with only minor disturbances to our neighbors in the office park. Thank you, parents, for helping those possibly stressful times flow almost seamlessly.

The Scholars' Academy welcomes Christine Anaya as a member of the staff working in math/science with our Investigators I students. Ms. Anaya's experience was in third grade at a school in Wilmington, NC, and fourth grade in Columbus, OH. Her degree in education was awarded at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. We are happy to have her with us to begin the year in Mrs. Weeks's classroom.

If you need to communicate with your child's teacher, our email addresses are the teacher's first initial followed by their last name @scholarsacademy.org , e.g. lsmith@scholarsacademy.org. Each teacher also has a contact page on the school website. You can reach them by using their contact form. The contact form on the main page of the website comes to my address. Please feel free to use that as well.

We are starting the year with a variety of after school activities for students at all age levels. Many of these groups will be having introductory meetings this week. Please watch the website for announcements.

We began the year with our Teacher Talks on September 7 with our Discoverers I parents. Please check the calendar for the night that you are invited to be at the school to talk with the teacher(s) at your level. We will be discussing curriculum, classroom procedures and other topics of interest to you. For our Apprentice Scholars II and III parents (grades 7 and 8) we have invited a panel of Scholars' Academy parents to speak with you about navigating the high school enrollment process. Please join us for these Teacher Talks on your designated evening from 6:00 - 7:00 p.m.

On behalf of the staff, let me welcome you to the 2011-2012 school year. We are pleased to have you with us.

For the earth,
Marie Peine, Ph.D., Director

2011 Soccer Team

Congratulations to the following students who made the 2011 Soccer Team:

The Scholars' Academy Eagles opened the 2011 soccer season with a trip to St. Michael's in Gastonia. The EaglesSoccer photo held their own for 20 minutes when St. Michael's broke through. The Eagles had their chances but were unable to convert and the home team poured it on, leading 3-0 by halftime. After St. Michael's scored early in the second half, both teams experimented with their formations and lineups, gaining valuable experience for later in the season. Final score: St. Michael's 6 - Scholars' 0.

The Soccer team had their first home game on Tuesday, September 6 at Renaissance Park against Carolina International. For the complete schedule, game locations and scores, please see our Athletics Program webpage on the Scholars' Academy website located under departments.

Congratulations to all of our student athletes who worked so hard! We wish you all a successful season!

3rd/4th Grade Intramural Program

Due to the overwhelming request for a sports program for the 3rd and 4th grade students, the Athletics Department isBasketball image putting together a program focusing on skill building in a select sport. This program will focus mainly on the skills related to a particular sport, with the occasional scrimmage against each other. It is not affiliated with the Charlotte-Gastonia Athletic Association, in which our middle school takes part. The overall goal of the program will be to provide students with the skills needed to be successful in a particular sport. There is no fee for this program.  All skill levels are welcome to participate.

The first program will focus on basketball skills and will take place in October. Students in grades 3 and 4 are welcome to participate. It will take place at Scholars' Academy on Mondays and Wednesdays after school from 3:30 until 5:00 p.m. For this program to succeed and continue, we will need parent volunteers to coach the groups. Volunteers will need to be at the school from 3:15 until 5:00 p.m. when all children should be picked up.

This is a trial program with the hopes of continuing to provide additional programs like this throughout the school year.  If you are interested in coaching a group or if you are interested in signing your child up for the program, please email Noelle Zagorski at nzagorski@scholarsacademy.org by September 23.

Eagle Scout ProjectEagle Scout Project Completed

The Eagle Scout is the highest rank given by the Boy Scouts of America. It is an accomplishment that follows a young man throughout his life. One key part of the Eagle trail is the Eagle project, which requires the scout to select, plan, lead and raise funds for its completion.

When the time came for 2009 Scholars' graduate Nick Watkins to select his project, the choice was clear. The opportunity to give back to his old school was quite compelling. After working through several ideas and meeting with both staff and parents, he ran into Ms. Bernard one afternoon. She shared the challenges the younger students have with the steep hill that leads away from that side of the building which is their primary route of egress during fire drills.

Nick presented his project at a board meeting. His plan to build a set of terraces for the younger students was metEagle project picture with enthusiasm. After more than 100 service hours by two dozen volunteers, the steps were completed prior to the opening of school. Nick would like to thank Dr. Peine, Ms. Bernard, and many of the Scholars' community who gave both financially and with their time.

Public Library Fines Reminder

Please pay any public library fines your children have so they can check out books with their class. Fines can be paid online here

Scholars' Library Update

Books

REMINDER:  If you have students in grades K-5, please turn in your library card application as soon as possible.  Your child will not be able to check out books from the Scholars' Academy library without a library card. The form was in your packet from orientation, but if you need a new one, please contact Joanna Keel at keelfamily@carolina.rr.com.

If you are interested in volunteering in the library, we need parent volunteers to help with the following:  reshelving books, repairing damaged books as needed, and helping K-5 classes during their library visits.  If you are interested in helping with class visits to the library, you must be willing to sign up for a weekly one to two hour block of time on either Tuesday or Thursday.  There will also be a training session required for all volunteers.  Please contact Joanna Keel for more details.

Save Your Box Tops

We all shop for groceries, sometimes two or three times a week, or more. Turn those shopping trips into easyBoxtops 4 Education cash for our school, and encourage friends to do the same! Just look for the Box Tops logo on hundreds of products like Cheerios®, Hamburger Helper® and Kleenex®, in almost every aisle of the store. All you need to do is clip and send them to the PTO hamper in your child's classroom. Each one is worth 10¢ for your school. Questions? Contact Dawn Lombard at dlombard@carolina.rr.com.

Eagle Wear

The PTO is happy to offer Eagle Wear to help our students show their school spirit! We are partnering, once again, with Teddy's Embroidery Shop to bring a variety of shirts, sweatshirts, caps, etc. with an embroidered Scholars' Academy logo. The order form is available on the school's website on the PTO page

This year, we will also be offering a separate online store through Add-Logos for a selection of screen-printed items. Based on parent feedback from last year, we are setting up a "Sample Closet" in the PTO room which will have a few size samples from both companies. Be on the lookout for an Eagle Wear email coming soon with instructions and details for ordering from both of these companies!

For additional information, please contact Beth Gage at bethdgage@gmail.com.
