Testing - Round #2 There are a lot of fun things happening at school, but we need to get a fix on the next round of testing that begins May 23. The Terra Nova 3 will be given in grades K, 1, and 2. Students in grades 3 - 8 will be doing the NC End of Grade tests in reading comprehension, mathematics and science. End of Course tests for 8th graders and 6th graders will be held May 27, June 1 and June 2.
The most important thing to remember during testing season is that students need to be at school no later than 8:30 a.m., well rested, and having had a good breakfast. All students who are enrolled in grades 3 - 8 are required to take the EOGs and students enrolled in courses for high school credit are required to take the EOC given in that course. In addition, students who do not score at Performance Level III are required to do a RETEST. The school will contact parents of students who need to do a retest after we receive the scores on June 7.
EOGs and EOCs scores are used to calculate whether our students have made the level of growth that the state has predicted for them (ABCs) and to provide data about adequate yearly progress (AYP) at our school. The Department of Public Instruction releases that information during early fall. Terra Nova scores are a measure we use to evaluate student progress in grades where the EOGs are not given.
The Scholars' Academy does not use test scores to make decisions about placement. However, the results may be used as part of a composite of information that is collected to determine any placement changes. Please help us to a successful conclusion of the testing season and the school year for your child. A special THANK YOU to Dr. Brenda Romanoff of UNC-Charlotte who, as the liason with the staff at Montclaire Elementary, arranged our outreach efforts for tutoring with 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students. It was a very successful experience for all, and we plan to expand the program for next year.
For the earth,
Marie Peine, Ph.D., Director

Have A Green Thumb?
Do you love to work outside and are you interested in keeping our school looking nice? If so, sign up to help the Interior and/or Exterior Beautification Committee. We especially need help from now until the school hires an outside service. The school is interviewing and getting bids for the job, but meanwhile the yard is still growing! We need help mowing, trimming, and weeding.
If you can help, contact Nilgun Trogdon at

Thanks For Teacher Treats
The PTO would like to offer a BIG thank you to Marie Deitch, Lyn Soo Kang, Jurga Petrikiene, Sun Gandara, Sharda Dasri, Anna Bhat, JD Doliner, and San-Dee Keefner for their help with our teacher treats in April and May.
In April, we served a breakfast of homemade granola bars, berries with honey vanilla yogurt, and lemon pound cake with coffee and juice. This month, we served Greek salad with grilled Greek chicken, a platter of assorted cheeses and crackers, Indian bread, and an array of desserts including lemon trifle, chocolate pound cake with strawberries, and banana pudding. A bowl of apples and clementines for afternoon snacking rounded out the luncheon.
Thank you to all of these volunteers for helping to make Scholars' Academy a happy place for our teachers! If you like to cook or bake (or even if you would prefer to purchase your contributions!) and would be interested in helping with some of our teacher treats next year, please contact Beth Gage at bdgage@gmail.com. |
