TERRA NOVA TESTING
Testing starts Monday, April 11 at 8:40 a.m. for students in grades 3 - 8. We will be conducting the tests for four days. Monday and Tuesday testing sessions are two hours. Wednesday and Thursday are one hour tests. Please have your children at school on time, well-rested, having had a good breakfast. Students who arrive after 8:30 will not be admitted to the testing session for that day. There are no make-up tests for the Terra Nova. The Terra Nova is a nationally normed test that we use to give us a more accurate picture of student achievement than we receive from the North Carolina EOG tests. We are able to do out-of-level testing, one grade level above the assigned grade for a student (not permitted by North Carolina statutes) and we receive results for all major subject areas for all grades. K - 2 students will take the test in May.

Our middle school team, Aashna Kumar, Alex Harrison, and Devin McKillop placed second in the Middle School Division. A special thanks to our parent volunteer, Hannah Harrison, who is the Future Problem Solving organizer and coach at the Scholars' Academy, and to our core of parent experts and volunteers who have supported the development of this new activity for our students.

Remember feeling lost in a sea of questions once you decidedsailboats to enroll your child at Scholars'?  Ambassadors are needed to help new families get their sea legs and successfully navigate to the first day of school and beyond.  Contact Maura O'Sullivan (mauraosullivan@me.com) if you are willing to assist a new family as they transition to Scholars'.  Successful relationships from previous years have carried into the school year with the newer family taking on roles with the PTO, Development Committee and other areas. Ms. Hinkelman Makes A Splash

Mama Duck Ida, better known as Scholars' Academy's ownMs Hinkelman Ms. Hinkelman, was surprised by some of her student "ducklings" after her performance in "Honk" at the Old Courthouse Theater in Concord.  "Honk" is a musical version of The Ugly Duckling.  Ms. Hinkelman captivated the audience as she sang and danced in her role as the mother duck who never gave up on her misfit offspring.

Waste Free Lunches - Good For All

In honor of Earth Day this year, the Scholars' Academy would like to encourage our students and parents to pack waste-FREE lunches! A waste-free lunch program is a process of educating students and parents about where our trash ends up and how we, as individuals, can reduce the amount of trash we generate.

It has been estimated that on average a school-age childtrash bags using a disposable lunch generates 67 pounds of waste per school year. That equates to 18,760 pounds of lunch waste for just one average-size elementary school.

What can we do to reduce the problem?

Ideas for a waste-free lunch:
· Sandwiches and other main dishes, fresh fruits, vegetables, and treats can be placed in a reusable lunch container or containers. Cloth bags or plastic Tupperware type products work well. With a sharpie marker, label top and bottom of each container.
· Cloth napkins - These can be small dish kitchen dish cloths or wash cloths. Simply throw in the washing machine.
· Stainless-steel forks and spoons - Use old ones or pick up a few at the dollar store in case they are lost.
· Reusable drink containers.
· Reusable lunchboxes - Many stores have a variety of low cost options.

In this scenario, very little trash is generated because foods are bought in bulk or in larger packages. The packaging is leftlunchbox at home for reuse or recycling. Food waste also decreases because with a reusable lunch container, children can re-pack uneaten food instead of dumping it, packaging and all, into the school trash can.

What does it cost to pack a waste-free lunch? You can save up to $400 a year by packing waste free lunches as compared to the typical lunch! That's a savings we can all appreciate.
