VOLUNTEER NEEDEDA Golf coach is needed for the Scholars' Academy athletic program. We have students in grades 5 - 8 who are interested in participating in golf as a spring sport. If you are interested in helping in the program by coaching, please contact our Athletic Director at nzagorski@scholarsacademy.org The scheduling meeting for spring sports is February 3. If we do not have a coach by February 2, we will be unable to schedule golf for the spring. A FINAL NOTE ABOUT TRAFFIC (I promise)This is a portion of a message I received this week from our neighbors at 5200 Seventy-seven Center Drive: "The traffic coming out of this school has become quite a nuisance. First it was just parents not yielding the right of way in the traffic circle or just plain turning left out of the circle instead of going right. I have been almost hit several times because of this activity. Many other people in my office have had the same problem. Please do something about it, the safety of everyone is more important than saving 5 seconds to hurry through this circle."
For the earth,
Marie Peine, Ph.D., Director

Teacher/Staff Appreciation Luncheon
Teacher Appreciation Week is quickly approaching. It will be February 14 - 18. We need your help! Thursday, February 17 the entire staff will be taken out to lunch, courtesy of the PTO. We will need three parents to cover each class that day from 12:45 to 2:45 p.m. Please sign up with your room parent. Please note: younger siblings are not allowed as we need to make sure our volunteers have their attention focused on the class... but, it will be the end of the day, so you won't have to leave and come back for pick-up! |
Grandparents Day Volunteers NeededWe need your help with a great event that showcases our school to a very important audience -- GRANDPARENTS. Spanish Students Help Others In Need
Mrs. Castilla-Hobbs and Scholars Academy upper school students volunteered with the Ada Jenkins Center, a non-profit organization, on December 9, 2010. The students sponsored two Latino families with children whose ages ranged from four months to 10 years old. These families were experiencing financial difficulties and couldn't provide holiday presents for their children. Students made donations and with the money raised, gifts were purchased for the children in need. Scholars' Academy students went to Plaza Fiesta Mall, where they practiced their oral Spanish skills to purchase the gifts.
This is what Ada Jenkins and the families we helped said about our students:
"Every year, this program brings the meaning of Christmas closer to my heart, as I see so many people coming together to help others that they may not even know, so many unique stories of young kids giving of themselves to others, and grateful families happy to have HOPE and JOY brought to their lives. I share with you the thanks from two of our families:
'Thank you all for making this a beautiful Christmas for my family. They loved their gifts and gift cards and their smiles were so big and bright. We had something to eat, a wonderful meal from people we don't even know. Thank you for touching our lives and making this a very Merry Christmas. We may not know your names but we know your hearts. Love all. Happy New Year.'
'Thank you for making this Christmas fantastic for my family. My family will continue praying for the people who truly step outside of themselves to make other people happy.'"

Growing A Library
Did you donate books to the school library? Wondering why they are not in circulation yet? We have received approximately 1,500 books this year through donations, proceeds from the Scholastic Book Sale, and DonorsChoose projects. While this is wonderful for our students, it takes a lot of time to catalog that many books. Thanks for being patient as we continue to work with your donations!
Let's also give a big thank you to OrthoCarolina, who donated a used PC for our checkout station in the media center once we get it up and running.
