Night of the Notables
Did you know that former President Martin Van Buren kept two pet tiger cubs? Or that Charlotte Hawkins Brown, a North Carolinian, was the first woman admitted to Harvard? These and other little known facts about notable people are the showcase for our Night of the Notables, an annual event that showcases portions of our humanities curricula. You will meet favorite storybook characters, notable North Carolinians, Bill Cosby, Temple Grandin, John F. Kennedy, Sacajawea, and a host of noteworthy people who made the world a different place for a few or for many.

We invite the members of our school community to join us for this event on Tuesday, December 14, from 6:00 to  7:00 p.m. All of our notable people in Discoverers and Investigators will be available to talk with you in their classrooms. Apprentice Scholars will visit with guests in the gym/commons area. We ask that you come to the Night of the Notables prepared to talk with our famous people about such topics as their families, their contributions to the world during the time in which they lived, the challenges they faced to reach their goals, and people who were important to them, both personally and professionally. We hope you are able to set aside some time during the busy holiday season to experience Night of the Notables.

Invitation for Parent Night #2 - Introducing NC WISEOWL, a research tool
Kim Nees will be presenting  information for parents about NC WISEOWL. WISEOWL is a comprehensive and safe research site, developed by the NC Department of Public Instruction, through which children can get access to an outstanding number of data sources on numerous topics. The session is planned for Wednesday, January 5 from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. Mrs. Nees has been working with several classrooms, and we feel that this information would be valuable for parents. Please join us on January 5, 2011.

Thank you to the parents and staff who spent a couple of Saturday afternoons at school Open Houses meeting and talking with prospective families. We have had the largest crowds ever for these informational sessions.

Holiday parties for our classrooms are optional on December 17. Please check with your child's homeroom teacher for details.

Also note that Friday, December 10 is a half day. Students will be dismissed at 11:25 a.m.
