A Letter from Ms. Moschel's Class:
At a class meeting in October, the second graders in Mrs. Moschel and Mrs. Anton's class selected a class project to raise money to protect land in the rainforest; but they can't do it without you! They are selling shirts, tote bags, wallets, hats (and a variety of other items). All items are about saving the rainforest! Students from the class are visiting the other classrooms in the school, making presentations about the project, and leaving information and forms with students for ordering. The stuff will come in before winter break. Here are a couple of reasons why we should save the rainforest... A rainforest the size of New Jersey is being cut down every day; 56 percent of all animals are found only in the rainforest. Money raised by the project will be used to support the preservation of acreage at the Children's Cloud Forest in Monteverde, Costa Rica.

Thank you to Peyton Thomas for the information in this letter.

RECOGNIZING:  Ms. Kathy Moschel, who has been named as the Primary School Teacher of the Year by the NC Entomological Society. Ms. Moschel submitted samples from the unit about insects that she has developed for our Discoverers III classrooms. The unit is the final stage of our Discoverers level curriculum about living things, which begins at the Discoverers I with animals, continues in Discoverers II with plants, and concludes with insects. Congratulations on this well-deserved award.

LOST and FOUND: The number of items in our lost and found is exploding. If your children's closets seem to be missing any number of items, please check out our lost and found under the stairway behind the reception area. Any items left there at Thanksgiving will be donated to service organizations.

ADMISSIONS: Our first official event for admissions for the 2011/2012 school year was the open house for prospective parents that was held on Saturday, November 6, at school. It was most gratifying to be able to host the open house at our new facility. Current parents and staff were on hand to discuss the program and our school community with visitors. Current families are our most visible means of connecting with potential families of highly gifted children who might be interested in considering the Scholars' Academy as a possible option for school. We will receive many calls and emails from prospective families from now until our application deadline of January 31. If prospective families have any questions that you are unsure about, please encourage them to call the school office - or email Ms. Cuneo or me.

Please remember that the criteria for eligibility is as follows: to be automatically eligible, a child must have an IQ score that is three standard deviations above the mean for the particular test that was administered. Different tests have different means and standard deviations. With a score between two and three standard deviations of the mean, the application will be evaluated by the School Based Admissions Team, for determining eligibility. There is no automatic cut-off score in the two-to-three standard deviations range that determines eligibility. If you indicate a "cut-off score" to prospective parents, you would be providing inaccurate information about our process. Eligibility does not guarantee admission to the school, as that is determined by lottery.

Thank you for all you do to promote our program for highly intellectually gifted learners.

For the earth,
Marie Peine, Ph.D., Director
Why Should I Get Involved?

Whether your child has just started kindergarten, is entering the final year of middle school, or is somewhere in between, there are many good reasons and opportunities for you to volunteer at school. It's a great way to show your child that you take an interest in his or her education, and it sends a positive message that you consider school a worthwhile cause.

Parent volunteers offer a huge resource and support base for the school community while showing their kids the importance of participating in the larger community.

The school isn't the only one to reap the benefits of your involvement. By offering some of your time to the school, and by interacting with teachers, administrators, and other parents on a regular basis, you can gain a first-hand understanding of your child's daily activities.    You can also gain some insight into the trends and fads of school life that will help you communicate with your child as he or she grows and changes (all without intruding on your child's privacy or personal space).

Involvement is easy. You don't have to log hundreds of volunteer hours for your child to benefit.  Even if you can only volunteer a few hours a year, every little bit counts. If you're ready to do more, email me at melissa@vbmg.com and we will find ways for you to get involved that fit both your schedule and your interests.

Thank you,
Melissa Brown

Scholars' Staff Has Talent

The talent pool runs deep among the faculty and staff of Scholars' Academy. Did you know that the Charlotte Concert Band is conducted by our very own Dr. Morris?

The Charlotte Concert Band is a volunteer community bandCharlotte Concert Band Logo comprised of professional and dedicated amateur musicians whose mission is to encourage lifelong participation in music through quality performances of classic concert band repertoire. Providing FREE concerts since 1967, this talented group of musicians truly embrace their mission.

In their recent folksongs concert held at Dana Auditorium on October 30, they opened with a wonderful rendition of the Star-Spangled Banner and played concert band favorites such as Shenandoah and selections by composer Gustav Holst.

For more information on CCB and future concerts, visit their website at www.charlotteconcertband.org.
Safety Reminder

Please refrain from texting while you are driving with childrenTexting cell phone in the car.  Make it a habit to only text when your car is parked.  Emergencies and urgent matters occasionally make it necessary to talk on the cell phone while driving on school property - but please, for the safety of our students, wait to make phone calls until you leave our busy parking lot.

Plasticware Needed

If you happen to have spare plasticware (clean/new forks and spoons only) that you've perhaps accumulated fromSilverware take-out dinners, we could use them in the lunchroom!

Please bag them and drop them off in the PTO room or have your child pop them into his/her PTO hamper.  Thanks!

Bouncing For Bucks Has Paid Off

Thanks to everyone who attended the lower grades social at Monkey Joe's last Thursday.  We estimate that we had a 30 percent turnout of the eligible lower grade classes. Ms. Surrett's class had the most students in attendance. We earned 25 percent of admissions and 20 percent of concession sales. A BIG thank you to Dr. Peine for working the concession stand!

Eagle Fun'd' Day Recap

The PTO would like to thank everyone who participated in the 2nd Annual Eagle Fun'd' Day.  The students had a great time racking up points at the various activities. Special thanks to Mrs. Z for creating the stations and dedicating her PE classes to this event. Thanks also goes to the volunteers who supervised the activities during the week.

The fundraiser has been a great success; totals will be available after all pledges are collected.

Don't forget to send in your pledges by November 12.
Eagle Scout Project Update

Past graduate Nick Watkins has chosen to do his Eagle Scout project for Metrolina Regional Scholars' Academy. His intention is to build a covered picnic area on the frontEagle playground, pending approval from the Boy Scout Council.

Nick needs to do 100% of the fundraising for his project.  He is selling Auto Bell car wash coupons for $15.00. Nick will get to keep half of the proceeds from the tickets sold towards purchasing materials needed for the project.

A brief note from Nick:
Thank you to all who have already purchased Auto Bell car wash tickets for my Eagle project. I will be selling them until November 10 if anyone else is interested. Please contact pattywat@ctc.net.

Yours in Scouting,
Nick Watkins
