The 2010-2011 Annual Fund Campaign
We are in the final week of our annual fund drive to provide operational funds for Metrolina Regional Scholars' Academy. As I look at our thermometers outside the building on this Saturday, October 23, I notice that we are about 1/3 of the way to our goal, and about 1/3 of our families have made pledges.
There are a couple of factors that might account for these numbers: 1) Economic conditions in the Charlotte area have not rebounded strongly enough for many of our families to make a financial commitment to the school; 2) Dissatisfaction with some aspect of your child's experience - unhappiness with a homeroom placement, program concerns, etc.
On the other hand, there are 309 reasons/factors to consider a contribution to the school for the 2010-2011 school year - and those 309 reasons walk through the school doors each morning at 8:15 - and for the most part they walk through the doors with smiles on their faces.
Your financial support provides an educational opportunity unlike any other for your highly gifted child. Classroom size is 20 students or fewer; the variety of enrichment classes is extensive - and within individual enrichment classes we have expanded student options; administrative expenses are low compared to other schools of our size; our curriculum automatically accelerates content for students; we have a physical home after 10 years. As with all charter schools, it is the facility issue that continues to create financial challenges for our operations. All of you have read that we need a substantial level of support as noted in the percentages from our donor base to secure funding from foundations and possible corporate sponsors.
For these reasons and for those 309 learners at our school each day, please contribute what you can to the 2010-2011 Annual Fund. TDAP Update - All students in 6th grade are required to have TDAP immunizations. The school needs the report from the family physician that this immunization has been administered. Students who do not have the records to the school by October 28 will not be permitted to return to school after that date until the record has been provided. Dialogue With the Director - If you have questions about operations, curriculum, or other topics of interest concerning the school, we invite you to attend one of the following informational Q & A sessions:
For parents of Discoverers (K, 1, & 2) Monday, November 15
For parents of Investigators (3, 4, & 5) Tuesday, November 16
For parents of Apprentice Scholars (6, 7, & 8)
Wednesday, November 17
All sessions will begin at 6:00 p.m. For organizational purposes, parents are encouraged to submit questions in advance to: director@scholarsacademy.org, however this is not a requirement for having questions answered. For the earth,
Marie Peine, Ph.D., Director

Great Season, Athletes!
Soccer SA soccer played hard against Carolina International School (CIS), but unfortunately were eliminated from future playoff games due to a 3-1 loss. Rajan Tayal scored SA's only goal. Ian Watkins, as keeper, defended SA's goal well against a number of shots, but the team was outnumbered and out scored. Fond farewells to veteran 8th grader players Ana Carolina Scott and Baily Lewis as well as rookie Nick Firr. All contributed tremendously to this season. Go Eagles! Cross-Country Scholars' Academy competed in the final CGAA Conference "run off" winning 5th place (girls) and 6th place (boys) in conference standings with 10 teams competing. Most runners bested their times by as much as 2 minutes with great results. The boys' times for a 2.1 mile run were: Kyle Mitchell 14:30, Devin McKillop 15:47, Auston Li 17:23, Evan Hemming 19:10, Alex Harrison 23:23, Nathan Gant 27:00, and JP VanBuren 28:35. The girls' results for 2.1 miles were: Tanisha Paul 16:13, Sita Tayal 16:17, Mary Catherine Van Buren 18:51 and Navami Jain 20:15. Frank Liske is one of the tougher courses and everyone dug deep and really finished strong! Conference medal winners, determined by the coaches, were: Sita Tayal, Tanisha Paul, Devin McKillop and Kyle Mitchell. Congrats to runners for a wonderful season. |

DonorsChoose Scholars' Academy
Introducing a great new program to the Scholars' Academy - DonorsChoose, an on-line charity that connects potential donors from across the United States to public schools in need based on each individual classroom project. A donor can give as little as $1 to any project, of their choosing, and all contributions are tax deductible. Our first project submission, "Dollars for Scholars - Jump Start Our Reading Adventure", was funded in less than 30 days and will provide us with 25 FREE library bound books for our new media center. Thank you to Mrs. Rhodes (1st grade) for sponsoring this project on the DonorsChoose website. There are many wonderful opportunities on this website to help schools in need just like ours - spread the word!

Eagle Scout Project To Benefit School
Past graduate Nick Watkins has chosen to do his Eagle Scout Project for Metrolina Regional Scholars' Academy.
His intention is to build a covered picnic area on the front playground, pending approval from the boy scout council. Nick needs to do 100% of the fundraising for his project. He is selling Auto Bell car wash coupons for $15.00. Nick will get to keep half of the proceeds from the tickets sold towards purchasing materials needed for the project.
If you are interested in purchasing a car wash coupon, or donating to this cause, please contact Patty Watkins at: pattywat@ctc.net. Include your child's name, grade and teacher, and he will deliver the coupon to you at school. |

We're Turning Green
Come be a part of making the Scholars' Academy grounds more green...
Saturday, November 6 8:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m.
Volunteers are needed to install native plant landscaping in front of the school.
Please bring shovels (large and small), rakes, wheelbarrows, watering cans, gardening gloves, potting soil, fertilizer, peat moss, or other soil amendments.
The plant material has been selected for drought resistance and is almost entirely native to the region, all for purposes of eliminating any irrigation requirement in support of the buildings LEED certification. Blueberry and strawberry plants in the planting areas right at the front doors will bear fruit, which can be enjoyed by students and wildlife alike. The wall-climbing vines incorporated into the design are intended to reduce the heat gain on the west facing walls by shading that area as they grow, reducing the load on the air conditioning system.
