Media message
The cover of the September 20 issue of TIME magazine asks "What makes a school great?" "It all starts with teachers." We knew that! It also reads " 'Waiting for Superman': Can a movie change education?" Did An Inconvenient Truth change the way we consider the environment and climate change? This week's webinar with the Department of Public Instruction brought into focus the impact of the funds that NC will receive from the Race to the Top initative - mostly targeted to Title I schools and raising test scores. Our segment may come in the form of staff development funds (although these may be targeted to training in the new "core standards") and technology. We will keep you informed. But do not discount the power of the media to bring attention to any topic, if only for 15 minutes. Morning drop-off line second request
We still have parents stopped in the drop-off line as early as 8:00 a.m. This really needs to be a constantly moving stream of traffic. Please park in one of our parking areas if you arrive at school before 8:15. Progress reports
Progress reports will be coming home at the end of the day on Thursday, September 30.
For the earth,
Marie Peine, Ph.D., Director

Box Tops For Education
The 2010-2011 school year is well underway and hopefully everyone is settling into a good routine. If you have looked at the packaging of practically anything you have purchased recently (from food to paper goods) you may have noticed a small rectangular "coupon" that says "Box Tops".For every one of those that is clipped and sent in, our school receives 10 cents. This is "free" money for our school by just buying the products you probably get anyway. Please start clipping those Box Tops and have your child put them in the PTO hamper in their classroom. Our first deadline is at the end of October. Thanks so much because every little bit helps; you would be surprised at how quickly they add up. Questions? Contact Kim Szentesi-Thomas at kszentesi.thomas@yahoo.com |

Take A Child Outside Week
The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences is sponsoring Take A Child Outside Week September 24-30. This is a program designed to help break down obstacles that keep children from discovering the natural world. By arming parents, teachers and other caregivers with resources on outdoor activities, the goal is to help children across the country develop a better understanding and appreciation of the environment in which they live, and a burgeoning enthusiasm for its exploration.
There are nearly 400 partners across the U.S. offering special activities and rates for folks during Take A Child Outside week.
Last year nearly 8,000 kids went outside as part of this effort. This year they're hoping to double that number. Please pass on the Take A Child Outside information to your friends, family and co-workers.
