Our Eleventh Year!

And not at all surprising. We have 34,000 additional square feet of learning space. Our enrollment increased by nearly 50 students. We have 14 new staff members - some of them filling vacant positions, and some of them in new positions. We added instrumental music to our school program this year. We reconfigured the foreign language program for students at the Apprentice Scholars level. Our media lab is ready for use. Students from the first floor have worked in the science lab. Four staff members are completing gifted certification classes. These are some of the quantitative changes we can cite about the Scholars' Academy at the beginning of the 2010-2011 school year. Qualitatively speaking, there is an aura of expansiveness, and general feelings of accomplishment that support more specific feelings of moving forward.

Strings Classes for Investigators II (4TH)
We will be offering string classes for students in Ms. Miller's class and Ms. Smith's class beginning Monday, September 20. These classes will be held during the Monday music period of each class. Mrs. Anna Swic, our strings teacher will be at school on Thursday, September 16 at 3:15 p.m. to talk with interested families and measure students for violins. Please come visit with Mrs. Swic if your family is interested in the strings program.

Substitute Teachers Training Sessions
Training sessions for members and friends of our school community who are interested in substitute teaching will be held Tuesday, September 21 at 8:30 a.m. and 2:15 p.m. If you wish to be added to our substitute list, please attend one of these sessions. If you are interested in substitute teaching but are unable to attend on this date, let us know in the office. If you have attended a session in previous years, please check in with me for any updates.

Duke TIP for Apprentice Scholars II (7TH)
We will be distributing the paper registration forms for the SAT/ACT administered through Duke TIP. For families who wish to register online, our school code is 562891 - BC.

From The Desk Of Mrs. Cuneo

Dear students, parents, and staff,

I want to thank everyone for making me feel so welcome at The Scholars' Academy. I am so lucky to be part of such an amazing learning community. Starting at a time when MRSA has found a permanent home and has invited so many other staff members and students to join has allowed me to jump right in and be part of the growth. The sense of community and family is so strong at MRSA I cannot help to feel that I am part of something huge. The excitement and the energy that the parents, staff, and students share is contagious.
I am very fortunate to have the opportunity to work with people who go above and beyond in order to make MRSA what it is. I am eager to learn and collaborate with all of the exceptional community members. Thank you for inviting me to join the Scholars' Academy and I look forward to getting to know you all better.

Carpool/Pickup Information
If you have not received a carpool name tag (either group or individual), please e-mail me to let me know what last names need to be listed on the group name tags. For example, if you have three different last names in your carpool, list those last names for me. If you are just picking up your child/ren please e-mail me with just your last name. We would like for everyone to have a sign whether or not they are in a carpool group. At pickup time, we ask that you hold these signs up so that staff can quickly call your children from inside the school. I will send these signs home with your children so please ask them if they have received them. Thank you for your cooperation and patience, it definitely seems that the afternoon pickup is going more smoothly.

Sincerely,
Mrs. Jessica Cuneo, Associate Director

Scholastic Book Fair Coming Soon

We are in the process of designing a customized book fair for the unique reading interests of our students at the Scholars'boy reading Academy. Please note that the book fair dates have been modified. The new dates are: October 5 through October 8.

Since we are expecting a high volume of traffic on the afternoon of Fall Social, more volunteers will be needed to help with book sales from 3:30 until 6:30 p.m. on Friday, October 8.

Please contact Kim Nees at 704-541-7696 or knees@carolina.rr.com if you would like to help during the Fall Social or any other time during the week. Look for more information concerning the book fair in your child's book bag during the last week of September.

Check out our Scholars' Academy book fair homepage here.
A Million Thanks...

The PTO would like to thank San-Dee Keefner for providing food for the most recent PTO meeting.  It was much appreciated.

A big thank you to Lisa Russell-Pinson, Audra Segovia, and Dimple Shah who helped to clean and set up the shelves in the media center.
Scholars' Athletics

Congratulations to the following students who made the 2010 Scholars' Academy Cross Country team:
Apollo Brown, Artemis Brown, Nathan Gantt, Alec Granger, Ceyda Guley, Alex Harrison, Evan Hemming, Navami Jain, Will Kallao, Auston Li, Devin McKillop, Tanisha Paul, Mary Steele, Sita Tayal, JP VanBuren, Mary Catherine VanBuren and Kyle Mitchell.

The first cross country meet is today, Monday, September 13 at Boyce Road Park.

Congratulations to the following students who made the 2010 Scholars' Academy Soccer team:
Michael Williams, Chris Deitch, Nicholas Lowell, Bailey Lewis, Ronak Bhagia, Hannah Spell, Nick Firr, Sunny Potharaju, Sofie Behdani, Charlie Rodgers, Megan Brickner, Ian Watkins, Ana Carolina Scott, David Scott, Rajan Tayal, Annelise Kempka, and Robert Gleason.

The Eagles had a great start to the season with two quick goals from the right side from Nicholas Lowell. Unfortunately, the Eagles weren't able to hold the lead and went into halftime with a 2-2 tie. After the break, the maturity and size of CIS took its toll and CIS ran out to a 6-2 lead. Scholars' pulled to 6-4 but CIS broke it open late for the final tally of 9-5!  Coach Watkins expected the Eagles to have a potent offense this year but will work with the young Eagles on defensive play. If they can develop some cohesion on defense, this year's team could make a lot of noise in the CGAA!

The next soccer game is tomorrow, Tuesday, September 14.  It is an away game at Alexander St. Park. The next two Fridays are home games at Clanton Park Pavillion.  Directions are on the Web site.

We hope you can come out and cheer for our players at one of their games this season.  Please check our Web site for dates and times for the games.  We are on the Scholars' Academy main Web site under "Athletics Program."  LET'S GO EAGLES!

Also, if your child is in 5th-8th grade and is interested in joining the JV Basketball team, please send Noelle Zagorski, Athletic Director an e-mail at nzagorski@scholarsacademy.org with your child's name, teacher name, parent e-mail and phone number.  We will have a girls' JV team and a boys' JV team.  Basketball will begin with tryouts in October.
