A Delirious Dozen

Twelve days and counting.  As is usual for this time of year, I reflect back to the beginning of September when the entire school year is ours for the doing. What a year! If you look at the school calendar, you will see the flurry of activity that marks the last twelve days of school. Serious activity centers around the EOG's and EOC's - our state testing requirements. Following the serious comes the fun - field days, the celebration - graduation and awards, and the anticipation - packing and moving. The promise of a permanent home has been a long time in the keeping, and now we are on the way there. As I met with grade level groups of parents last week, I was made aware of the outstanding commitment that our families make to the school and its continuity. The school will be full in the 2012-2013 school year. Who would have thought it when 2000 opened with 60 students? So we move toward the end of another school year. Hooray for us!

Forms for purchasing the 2010 full-color school yearbook have been distributed to all students by homeroom teachers. Yearbook distribution and signing will be Friday afternoon, June 4.

SPECIAL EVENT - Raptor Release
We will celebrate the end of the school year with a special event - the release of a rehabilitated raptor from the Carolina Raptor Center. We are tentatively scheduled for a release on June 9, the last day of school. Our back-up date is June 1. There are many variables in the rehabilitation of raptors, so neither of these dates can be guaranteed, but we are on the schedule. We are asking that each student bring $1.00 to donate to the raptor center as part of this special event. Please bring the cash amount to your homeroom teacher. We are excited to be participating in a signature event for returning injured raptors to their natural habitat. Thank you to parent, Dan Collins, and Raptor Center official, Cecily Rose, for organizing this celebration for us.

Letter from the Board of Directors

Dear Scholars' Parents and Friends:

The Board of Directors is accepting nominations for new lettermembers. The deadline for nominations is 5:00 p.m., Friday, May 28, 2010. All nominees must complete a nomination form located at the Board of Directors page on the school Web site and attach a current resume.
At this time, the Board is particularly interested in nominees who have professional experience in the following areas:

Education
Psychology
Communications
Development
Finance

Currently, the Board is composed of eight members. According to the bylaws, however, the Board may have as many as 11 members. Although the majority of the Board's members must be parents, the Board seeks to maintain a balance between parent and nonparent members. Because only one nonparent currently serves on the Board, nominations from nonparents would be most welcome.

If you have further questions regarding applications for the Board, please contact Ann Gleason at anngleason@windstream.net.

Sincerely,

The Board of Directors
