Dr. Peine's Pen

Dr. Peine's PenWelcome Jessica Cuneo, our new Associate Director

The Board of Directors is pleased to announce that Ms. Jessica Cuneo has accepted the position of Associate Director at the Scholars' Academy for the 2010/2011 school year. Ms. Cuneo grew up near Cleveland, Ohio and moved to North Carolina in 1998. She received her bachelor's degree in elementary education from High Point University. Her master's degree in curriculum, instruction, and supervision was awarded at UNC-Wilmington.  She is a National Board Certified Teacher and has the North Carolina endorsement for Academically/Intellectually Gifted education.  Her teaching experience has been with kindergarten, third, and fifth grade students, working with gifted children for the past four years. Jessica and her husband Steve live in Charlotte with their dog, Maggie. Jessica is a competitive runner and novice triathlete. Her other interests include reading, traveling, and all kinds of outdoor activities. We look forward to a very rewarding relationship with Jessica and are excited to have her join our school community.

Transportation - A reminder that once parents turn from Endhaven Lane into the school parking lot the speed directive is please drive slowly! The speed limit here is creep speed. The area in front of BASC and our school is not the place to make up lost time in the morning. Parents at morning drop-off should also remember to pull up as far as they can toward the mailbox so that parents behind them do not have to pull around in front of stopped cars to drop off a child. Once all riders are off the bus we will move the bus around the other side of the drive around in order to make drop off a safer experience for our car riders.

News About Our Graduates - Congratulations to the members of the Class of 2008 at Metrolina Regional Scholars' Academy who have been selected to attend the North Carolina School of Science and Math beginning in the fall of 2010: Grishma Alakkat, Aakash Indurkhya, Pooja Potharaju, and David Wang. Greg Song is on the wait list. We will update our congratulations as we hear from other graduates.

Recycling - We love that families are interested in our recycling program. Over the past month some families have been adding their recylables to our bins. We appreciate the ethics of this, but the school bins simply are not large enough to accommodate any items other than those that come directly from our students. To have piles of recycling material pile up between our biweekly pick-ups is unsightly and unsanitary. Please use your neighborhood curbside recycling program for your family items.

Earth Day - A special thank you to Maura O'Sullivan and Melissa Brown for our Earth Day activity table. This is one of my favorite days.  I had fun with the quiz - although I missed half of the questions. Even the one about the year of the first Earth Day. Who would have guessed?

For the earth,
Marie Peine, Ph.D., Director
Letter from the Board of Directors

Dear Scholars' Parents and Friends:

The Board of Directors is accepting nominations for newlettermembers. The deadline for nominations is 5:00 p.m., Friday, May 28, 2010. All nominees must complete a nomination form located at the Board of Directors page on the school Web site and attach a current resume.
At this time, the Board is particularly interested in nominees who have professional experience in the following areas:

Education
Psychology
Communications
Development
Finance

Currently, the Board is composed of eight members. According to the bylaws, however, the Board may have as many as 11 members. Although the majority of the Board's members must be parents, the Board seeks to maintain a balance between parent and nonparent members. Because only one nonparent currently serves on the Board, nominations from nonparents would be most welcome.

If you have further questions regarding applications for the Board, please contact Ann Gleason at anngleason@windstream.net.

Sincerely,
The Board of Directors
NOTA - A Million Thanks...

A great, big thank you to all who made Night of the Arts a success.

I would like to give special recognition to Jurga Petrikiene and Dawn Lombard, our PTO Hospitality Co-Chairs, for their countless hours of hard work and dedication to the success of Night of the Arts.  Thank you to our enrichment teachers, Ms. Bolz, Ms. Hu, Ms. Broome, Coach K., Ms. Blake, Ms. Swic and Mr. Strassberg.  The entire student body should beNOTA 2010.1 recognized as well for their hard work over the past few months in creating and learning their performances.  Weren't they great!!  What an amazing art gallery created by our students under the direction and care of our lovely art teacher, Ms. Tans.  One of my favorite performances of the evening was directed by Ms. Hinkleman.  This is just a taste of what you will experience when you go to the school play, "Seussical Jr.," which debuts Thursday, May 6.

It takes a small army of volunteers to pull this evening off - from creating posters and art labels, hanging art work,NOTA 2010.2 ushering, helping backstage, designing costumes, selling artwork, assembling risers, and the list goes on.  Thanks to all who volunteered their time.  Coming together to create an evening for our entire school community to enjoy is what it's all about.  I hope you all enjoyed the evening as much as I did.

Warmest thanks to:
Anthony Yodice, Kiran Kedar, Margaret Smith, Catherine Schwanke, San-Dee Keefner, Melissa Bernard, Kim Nees, Katherine Pair, Susan Tyler, Usha Sanyal, Priti Bhagia, Anand Kothari, Sudha Jangala, Magan Caplice, Rekha Bhatia, Suzanne Huffman, Angela Paul, Debbie Steele, Wes Jones, Beverly Montgomery, Rob Bernard, Andy Mitchell, Michael O'Sullivan and Dan Lombard.  Also thank you to Pro Prints (Nilma and Samir Amin) for printing our programs.

Sincerely,
Melissa Brown, PTO President
