The Eagle's Nest Update
Newsletter of Metrolina Regional Scholars' Academy A Charter School Serving Highly Gifted Students
|
Seasonal Alert!
How about those redbud trees and forsythia bushes! Has a Carolina spring ever looked so good? The winter seemed lengthy and cold and this spring is well-deserved.
With the new spring blooms comes spring break. This year spring break also marks the end of the third quarter of instruction at school. In classrooms, students will experience some new content, have an opportunity to synthesize a variety of concepts and ideas that have been investigated during the year, and of course work through reviews of necessary material.
The end of this school year will also mark the 10th year of operation of Metrolina Regional Scholars' Academy. With the move to our new home, we usher in a new decade of growth and achievement.
I would like to recognize the following parents who have dedicated time to the school this year with: Chess Club - Peter Stewart; Academic Games League of America - William DiBella; First Lego League - Julie Firr, Sabrina Brown, Brian Huneycutt, and David Johnston.
Remember to check the 77 center Web site to follow progress on the new building. Enjoy the spring . . . .break!

I Know What You'll Do This Summer
Summer is right around the corner. Do you have a plan to keep everyone busy? There are many great camp opportunities for gifted students. The following is a small list of just some of the camps available locally and nationally.
Yunasa at Camp Copneconic in Fenton, Michigan. Highly recommended by Stephanie Tolan who is also a founder of the camp and a Scholars' Academy Board member. Yunasa, the Lakota word meaning balance, is a weeklong camp experience for highly gifted youth. The mission of Yunasa is to teach campers techniques and skills for integrating the intellectual, emotional, social, spiritual and physical aspects of their lives. Ages 10 - 14.
"My experience at Yunasa was amazing and the impact was phenomenal. I had never felt so at ease. It was like everyone there was your friend before they even knew you. I can't wait to go back!" -Annika Bowers

Camp Broadstone is Appalachian State University's year round outdoor adventure and retreat center with a specialized summer camp for academically gifted youth. Its 55 acres of woods and meadows are located in the small community of Valle Crucis nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Green River Preserve Summer Camp for the Bright, Curious and Creative. The Green River Preserve is an environmental summer camp located on a beautiful 3,400 acre private wildlife preserve in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. This unique program offers a creative, nurturing, and intellectually stimulating approach to connecting children to the joy and wonder of the natural world. http://www.greenriverpreserve.com
The Camp Invention program instills creative problem-solving and critical-thinking skills that will encourage children's future success. Nothing could be more important than investing in your children today for the betterment of their tomorrow. A week-long summer enrichment day experience for children entering grades one through six.
Of course, many of the area private schools offer a wide range of camp experiences as well.
Do you know of other camps geared toward gifted students? If so, please email the information to Renee Alsop at
