Dr. Peine's PenThe Hard Work in Being Excellent

I love the Olympics. In fact, I love any quality competition in which people have expended an earnest effort to get better at something and have the opportunity to showcase the results of their efforts. To excel you need to work, practice, train, study, be committed and really love what you are doing. The passion to pursue excellence in something is a gift. It is an overworked phrase to say "I am honored to be in this excellent company," but I think that is a very real sentiment when you get to this level of excellence. So if passion, talent, and consistent effort pay off for the Olympics, why not think about this for our brains too?  I love the Olympics.

As you read in Gaston Gage's letter last week, the demolition phase of the interior of our new home has started.  Parents should NOT go to the site and go inside to see how things are going. This is a hard hat area, and there are significant safety and liability issues with these types of drop in visits. The 77 Center committee Web site  www.77Center.com  will provide pictorial updates about the progress. For now, please make your visits to our new school virtual visits.

Rachel Carroll (8th grade - Yodice) is currently working to raise money so she can go on a 17 day trip to China thisplane in sunset summer.  Rachel will be traveling with the People to People organization with 30 to 35 other middle school students from the Charlotte area.  She has a Web site and a YouTube video detailing all her fundraising efforts.  Please take a look and tell everyone you know!

Rachel and her family would like to extend a big thank you to Brian Huneycutt (Emma - Muse) for helping to build her Web site and for producing her video.

What's Next for Student Council?

The Student Council is happy to announce that the Valentine drive was a success! The Valentines were packed up and given to the children at Levine Children's Hospital.

We are now ready to start a new project, a canned food drive, benefiting Loaves and Fishes. We will be asking forloaves and fishes canned food of all sorts - all will be appreciated. This drive will start on Monday, March 15th, and will end on Thursday, April 1st.

We would be happy to accept any contributions for this project. Bins will be set out in the hallway and will be emptied out weekly. For safety reasons, we kindly request no glass items and no open cans.

At the conclusion of the drive, the class that has contributed the most will earn an ice cream party!

Thank You,
The Scholars' Academy Student Council

The Student Council is learning the process involved in coordinating a community service project.  Mary Tayal, PTO Community Service Coordinator, is helping students to organize and implement a canned food drive. Not only will we be able to help those in need, but the Student Council will be learning valuable life, work, and personal skills.
