School Happens
Report Cards were distributed on Friday. When we added that to the maelstrom of the admissions deadline, Ms. Hargrove and I were up to our ears in paper. I have been alerted that there were some errors made in the distribution of the report cards. Those errors are mine, and I do apologize to any students and families who received incorrect information. Incorrect names, incorrect matches for the two sides - to mention a couple - will be redone and the appropriate records will be given to students. My apologies. Each September, Ms. Turano distributes packets of information to students in grades 5 through 8 to support their investigations in unusual and unique topics. Each student is required to do original research and present the results of the study for evaluation by a panel of expert judges. Our first science fair was in the spring of 2002. The projects have consistently improved in detail and score throughout the years.

Scholars' Student Council Has Heart
The Scholars' Academy Student Council is kicking off their school wide Community Service Valentine project. Student Council representatives made posters to encourage everyone to participate. They are asking all students to make Valentines for children at CMC Levine Children's Hospital. Valentines will be collected from teachers on Friday, February 5 and delivered to the hospital shortly thereafter. What a beautiful way to make a child's day!

Bravo, Scholars!
Congratulations to Cameron Alsop (Hinkelman) for a fine showing at his first Cub Scout Pinewood Derby. He and his father designed, built, and painted his car that ran in several races against the cars of other Cub Scouts. Cameron is a Tiger Cub with Pack 502.

Around Town
February is Black History Month. The Harvey B. Gantt Center of African-American Art and Culture is presenting "Passage to Freedom," a four week exploration of the Underground Railroad. The Harvey B. Gantt Center is located at 551 South Tryon Street and can be reached at 704-547-3700 for more information.
The 4th grade is studying the human body in science. Mrs. Smith's 4th grade class went on a field trip to Earth Fare where they were educated about nutrition, the benefits of healthy eating, how to read food labels, and went on a tour of the store. They also were able to sample a number of healthful foods. Yummy!
Coat Drive Update: Steve Udelson collected over 10,000 coats and Scholars' Academy contributed 168! Given Charlotte's winter storm this weekend, many people will be warm due to Scholars' Academy's generosity. |
Snack Cart Reminder
Each month different classes provide the treats for the snack cart. Pre-packaged snacks or individually wrapped home made goodies work well.
The schedule is as follows:
January = Moschel & Bolick February = Surrett & Turano March = Muse & Yodice April = Smith & Bolick |

Volunteer Grants Program
Did you know that some area corporations may reward your volunteer hours with a grant to the school? For example, the Wachovia Employee Volunteer Grants Program offers a financial incentive for employees to volunteer with non-profit organizations. For each 24 hours an employee volunteers for a single 501(c)(3) organization during a calendar year, the employee can apply for a $100 grant to be presented to that organization from the Wachovia Foundation. Each employee may have up to two grants approved during the calendar year. Contact your HR department to find out if the Scholars Academy might be eligible for a grant in honor of your service!
