Go Green Tip |

Save the (health of) the Planet
Stopping the spread of germs and infections is as important as conservation and recycling when it comes to the concept of "saving the planet." Wash hands frequently by using soap and warm water and scrubbing for at least 20 seconds. Use a generous amount of hand sanitizer when water is not available and rub hands until dry. Cough and sneeze into your elbow to keep germs away from your hands. When in doubt, wash hands again!

Dr. Peine's Pen
35% + 65% = 100%
As we near the extended deadline for the 2009/2010 Fund Drive, the challenge is to grab the attention of the 65% of our school community who have not yet made a pledge to our effort for this year. If you have any questions or concerns about fundraising for this year, please come to the information session being presented by the Board of Directors and the development committee this evening, Wednesday, December 2 at 7 p.m. We need participation from everyone to raise the "heat" in our fundraising thermometers to $585,000 and 100%. Please consider the Scholars' Academy as part of your holiday giving plan.
For the earth,
Marie Peine, Ph.D., Director

Ballantyne Magazine Features Scholars' Academy
Have you noticed that we're being noticed? Word is spreading about the unique learning environment Scholars' Academy provides. The current Ballantyne Magazine features an inside look at the Scholars' Academy. This is the third piece about the school to appear recently in local publications. The fall issue of Ballantyne Magazine as well as the November-January issue of Little Ones Magazine also highlighted our school. Pick up a free copy of Ballantyne Magazine at local retailers or read the article "Brightest of the Bright?" |

A Million Thanks...
The PTO would like to thank Lyn-Soo Kang, Katharine Cary, Emme Barnes, Debbie Starling, Jurga Petrikiene and Beth Gage for their help with the November teacher treat. The staff enjoyed a delicious spread of pumpkin muffins with maple-brown sugar cream cheese, pears and grapes, spiced apple cider and orange juice. Thanks to all the volunteers who have helped recognize our staff with either a luncheon or a morning treat. The next luncheon is this Friday, December 4. Interested in helping? Please contact Beth Gage at bdgage@carolina.rr.com.
The PTO Family Fund has made life easier for so many of us this year. Did you know that Suzanne Huffman single-handedly maintains all of your accounts and directs those funds for you at your request? This is no small undertaking! Suzanne, we're grateful for all your hard work and your impeccable organization!
The yellow school directory that you received this year was put together by Patty Watkins with the help of Julie DiBella. Many hours of work went into preparing this handy reference. Thanks, Patty and Julie!
Melissa Bernard has generously offered her time and expertise for the fall and winter PTO bulletin board. It is located between the two kindergarten classrooms. Take a look and say "thanks" to Melissa as you pass by!

Eagle Wear is Everywhere
Our new embroidered Eagle Wear is popping up all over the school! As the weather turns cooler, we are seeing our new sweatshirts in both the crew-neck and hooded style on teachers and students alike. They are available in black, white, or a light heather ash gray. Perhaps your favorite chef would like a Scholars' Academy apron for holiday baking, or you could surprise your little folks with a long sleeved embroidered tee-shirt. We have many items available for gift-giving this year! The deadline for orders to be completed in time for the holidays is Friday, December 11. Please go to the school's Web site and download an order form. You may turn it into your child's PTO hamper with a check made payable to Teddy Kimer. Please note that we have had a report that the youth size sweatshirts by Jerzees run a little small. Please take this into consideration when placing your order. Remember, Teddy's Embroidery Shop contributes 10% of all Scholars' Academy sales back to the school. Thank you for supporting the Scholars' Academy!

Serving Our Community, Think Warm
As the temperature decreases, the need for winter clothing increases. Unfortunately, many in the Charlotte area do not have the resources to warmly clothe themselves or their families against winter's chill. Therefore, our upcoming school wide community service projects will address these needs.
Next week: Beginning next week and running for two weeks (Monday, December 7 through Thursday, December 17) there will be a drive for new and gently used gloves, mittens, scarves and hats. These items may be of any size, gender or style. All collected items will be donated to Charlotte Emergency Housing. This organization provides a homeless shelter for working families. Drop off box in main hallway.
January: Scholars' Academy will again hold a coat drive supporting Crisis Assistance Ministry via WSOC-TV Steve's Coats for Kids. New and gently used coats will be collected at school Monday, January 11 through Friday, January 15. Look for more on this as the date for the drive approaches.
As you purchase new winter attire for your family or redecorate the guestroom for Aunt Betty's visit, please remember to donate your gently used items to benefit those less fortunate than ourselves.
