TRADITIONS
As an institution, a school develops many traditions that endure because they represent some basic understandings about culture and time. One of the longest standing traditions at the Scholars' Academy is the Thanksgiving feast. In the fall of 2001, the upper level teachers and parents held a Thanksgiving Feast to celebrate the traditional values of Thanksgiving. Our feast was designed to bring families to the school to honor the approaching holiday with a traditional pitch-in meal that included the food items we associate with the holiday such as turkey, cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie. Our feast also included student friendly food such as chicken nuggets, chips, and soda. Some families contributed specific dishes that represented a variety of ethnic tables, such as curries and a variety of salsas. The tradition has endured. On Friday, the upper level classes will celebrate the approaching Thanksgiving holiday with our tenth Thanksgiving feast. Over the years other classrooms have celebrated the upcoming holiday with a variety of events, and the Thanksgiving feast endures in its original form - a school tradition.

Our Thanksgtiving holiday officially begins Wednesday, November 25. Many of us will travel miles to be with families and friends to enjoy our own traditional meals. Please keep these members of our school family in your thoughts during this holiday season: Heather Turano, Jan and Bruce Hargrove, and Eddie, Eric, and Kevin Rabel.

Calendar Note: Picture make-up day has been rescheduled (for the second time) for Wednesday, November 18.

Adopt-A-Stream Efforts Serve Our Local Community

Students from the seventh and eighth grades participated in the Scholars' Academy Adopt-a-Stream program by once again picking up trash along Four Mileadoptastream11-16-09 Creek and the accompanying greenway.  The bad news is that there was trash to be found.  The good news is that they had to really look for it.  This means that Scholars' Academy's past efforts have made a huge impact in the cleanliness of this waterway. Two employees of Mecklenburg County Parks and Recreation met us in the field and presented students with information on greenway planning in Mecklenburg County.  Josh Alexander (and friends) carted back the largest piece of trash; a small picnic table!  Thanks to Mrs. Pair (substituting for Mrs. Turano) and Mr. Yodice for chaperoning.
Bravo, Running Scholars!

Mrs. Cleary's class raised the most money for the first annual Fun'd' Run.  This lucky group of runners will enjoy an ice cream party to celebrate!  Congratulations!

A gadget drive is a new way to fundraise that turns your used electronics (laptops, cell phones, MP3 players, digital cameras, etc.) into cash to support a cause. Contributing to this drive is simple. Just visit the drive Web page at http://safundraising.gazelle.com, find the value of the gadgets you would like to donate, and send them to Gazelle (shipping is free). The value will go to support Scholars' Academy PTO. Our goal is to raise $3,000 by the end of the year.  Thank you for your continued support!
