gmail.com

Go Green Tip
Save money and encourage creativity!  At your next birthday party, why not show up with something really unique that your child helped create?  Who needs wrapping paper? You can use newspaper, an old map, reusable bag, basket, or anything else to make your gift special.  Be creative!  We all know how much waste is created at these events and homemade wrap is always more interesting.

Dr. Peine's Pen
Academic Games logo

By guest columnist Gaston Gage, Chair of Scholars' Academy Board of Directors

While Dr Peine is in China, I have the privilege of writing this column.

All of our board members were hosted by Stephanie Tolan to spend this past Saturday in a visioning exercise for the Scholars' Academy.  In our session, we spent the day reviewing where we've been, where we are, and where we want to go.  It was interesting to me that the mission and vision of the school, documented 10 years ago and displayed on the school Web site, were reaffirmed by all in attendance.  After nine years in operation, with many iterations of the board, four board chairs and two directors, the Scholars' Academy is still pointed toward the same goals and has the same long-term vision that the founders established.

As we look to the future, the building process continues to move forward and we're still on track to be in our new building for the next school year. The bank has given us terms that are satisfactory, and the bank and seller are working out the last elements of the contract.  We hope to have the contractual and financing provisions completed in the near term.  In the meantime, we have formed a committee of board members, parents and professionals to handle all of the issues surrounding the new building. There are many decisions on the table from design and construction to furniture and fixtures. This committee will be at the forefront in this effort.  I appreciate the willingness of many of our parents to pitch in for this important and time consuming effort.

A Million Thanks...

Soccer Field
A huge thank you to Glen Townley, Jennifer Rodgers, James Lowell, and John and Patty Watkins for helping string the nets and line the soccer field.  We can always use help lining the fields before our home games.

Teacher Treats
We'd like to extend a special thank you to Cary Probst and Priti Bhagia for helping to provide September's Teacher Treat.  If you are interested in helping with one of our treats in the future, please contact Beth Gage at bdgage@carolina.rr.com.
Soles 4 Souls Community Service

Do you have any blue suede shoes?  How about boots made for walkin'?  Any shoes with diamonds on their soles?  Would you like me to stop making silly song references regarding shoes?  Then donate any new or gently used shoes you may have regardless of color, height or sole make up to Scholars' Academy shoe drive benefiting Soles4Souls (www.soles4souls.com). Drop off shoes in boxes outside your child's classroom. Drive ends Friday, Sept. 25.

First Annual Scholars' Fun'd' Run
joggers
Exercise is essential for a healthy body and mind.  All Scholars' Academy students will be participating in our first annual Fun'd' Run during P.E. class the week of October 5-9.  Pledge forms and class schedules will be distributed this week.  Parents and families are welcome to come cheer for your child, or volunteer to help tally laps.  Please notify your room parent if you can help.  Your support will help the PTO fund classroom and staff supplies, school functions and activities, and many other programs for our students. Thank you in advance for your support!

Cross Country Team Brings the Heat

cross-countryA hilly 2.1 mile course coupled with blazing heat didn't stop the SA Cross Country team from giving it their all at the meet held September 14 in Gastonia. A member of the Charlotte Gastonia Athletics Association (CGAA), SA competed against nine other middle school teams in a field of 118 runners. For the girls, Mary Van Buren had the fastest time at 18:33 and ranked 14th overall out of 50 runners in the girls division. For the boys, Kyle Mitchell turned up the heat with an impressive 15:48 time, ranking 12th overall out of 68 runners in the boys division.

The hard-fought race by all our runners nets a 3rd place victory for the team in the girls division and 4th place for the boys. Running for Scholars' Academy were:

Mary VanBuren     7th grade              18:33
Lakshmi Prakash   7th grade              19:14
Tanisha Paul        4th grade              19:35
Sita Tayal           4th grade              20:43
Rachel Carroll       8th grade              21:11
Natalie Huffman    7th grade              23:29
Sophie Behdani     4th grade              23:32
Abby Chen           5th grade              25:30
Kyle Mitchell         6th grade              15:48
Devin McKillop       7th grade              17:01
Josh Martin          5th grade              17:23
Naveen Paul         7th grade              19:01
Evan Hemming      4th grade              20:34

Our entire team put forth a great effort at our very first meet at Gaston Day School.  While the boys do not have enough runners to place as a team, Devin and Josh placed very well over all.  Our girls are running with a full roster for the first time in three years.  Our girls placed an impressive 4th out of 10 teams.  While we only count the places for the first four runners, Rachel, Lakshmi, Mary, Abbey and Natalie ran well as a team, pushing each other on the challenging two-mile course.

The results from our first meet at Gaston Day:
Boys finished 10th of 10 with a score of 128
Devin           25th place/68          18:07
Josh            40th/68                  19:07

Girls finished 4th out of 10 with a score of 73
Rachel          18th place/48          20:10
Lakshmi         20th/48                  20:13
Mary             21st/48                  20:31
Abbey           40th/48                  24:17
Natalie          41st/48                  24:47

Congratulations to all our runners and special thanks to Coach Tammra Granger for making this all possible. Thanks also to Krishna Prakash and Toni Hemming for driving and helping out. The next meet is today, Monday, September 21 hosted by Countryside Montessori. Best of luck guys!

School Logo Water Bottles Help Reduce Waste

Are you interested in ordering a stainless steel water bottle with the Scholars' logo?  Last year we sold out on our order of 150 bottles and you can still see them all over the school (scratched and dented, true, but still holding water!). Please e-mail Katherine Pair to place an order.  Please specify how many bottles you would like.  A minimum order must be made, so right now we are gauging interest.  The cap thread matches Klean Kanteen bottles so you can get their sippy/sport tops through local retailers.  We can order 17 or 24 oz. bottles (the same sizes ordered last year).  They will cost $8 each.  Recycling is smart, but REDUCING is brilliant!

Questions?  Contact Katherine Pair at kbpair@yahoo.com.
