Dr. Peine's Pen

2009-2010 Will Be Busy
Check the calendar (it is posted under>For Our Parents>Calendar) on the Web site, and you will see that nearly every day in September has an event. We are a busy school community. Class field experiences are coordinated with a specific aspect or topic being studied in the curriculum and students are out of the classroom learning in a different setting. An objective of our curriculum is to help students become aware of the connections between classroom studies such as the environment and raptors, or transportation and aviation. As adults we take many of these connections for granted, but that may not be true for learners who are at different stages of development and thought.
Our teachers are also taking part in some learning experiences: Ms. Moschel will be attending a week-long session at the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching (NCCAT) in Cullowhee, NC, entitled "Stress, Health, and Learning." Later in the fall, Ms. Tans will be at NCCAT attending "Exploring the Landscape through Arts and Writing." These seminar sessions are taught by recognized leaders in a variety of disciplines. The time at NCCAT is highly regarded by teaching professionals as a time to engage in study, reflection, and discussion about topics of interest to them personally and professionally. We are pleased to have Ms. Moschel and Ms. Tans representing our school in the broader public of education in North Carolina. Also later this fall, Mr. Yodice will participate in training through the Bill of Rights Institute about their new text The Presidents and the Constitution.
We are pleased to announce that the Scholars' Academy has been identified as a Confucius Classroom. The program is affiliated with the Confucius Institute at Pfeiffer University in Misenheimer and Charlotte. The program is sponsored by the government of the People's Republic of China and includes a monetary stipend for materials and activities identified by our school. As part of this program, the Scholars' Academy will be linked with a sister school in China, Shanxi Middle School, which is part of Shanxi University. Ms. Hu and I will be travelling in China, September 14 - September 24 as part of the exchange program - spending time with the personnel at our sister school and meeting with officials of the Confucius Institute. This is an exciting opportunity for our school to develop relationships and forge international ties built around education.
News About the Strings Program
Strings will begin October 6 and October 8. Strings will meet in the enrichment teachers area during regular music time. The classes meeting on October 6 will be students in Ms. Smith's homeroom, Ms. Bolick's homeroom, and Mr. Yodice's homeroom. Students should contact the Violin Shoppe at 2112 E. 7th Street, or 704-373-0551 to arrange for instrument rental. Please let the people at the Violin Shoppe know that you are taking lessons here and they will recommend the books for class. For Ms. Smith's class the books are Theory Workbook, Vol. I and String Explorer, Violin I. For the older students, the books are Theory Workbook I and Strings Explorer II. Students meeting on Thursday should arrange to meet with Ms. Anna Swic in the enrichment teachers room at 3:45 p.m. She will measure students for instruments and arrange the rental agreements with parents. Ms. Swic will conduct a Master Class for experienced students after school on Thursday at 4:00 p.m. Please talk with Dr. Peine if you wish to have your child in the Master Class. We are very pleased to be able to offer the strings program again for 2009-2010.
New Staff
Ms. Broome will be taking a temporary leave of absence from our school beginning at the end of September to prepare for the arrival of the first child for her and David. We are excited for her family. As her interim replacement, we are pleased to welcome Dr. Donald Morris to the school as our music instructor. Dr. Morris has extensive experience at all levels of music education in public school and private universities. He is currently an adjunct faculty member at Queens Univeristy and director of the Charlotte Concert Band.

Soccer Season Underway
The Scholars' Academy Golden Eagles soccer team kicked off the 2009 season last Thursday at Charlotte Prep. After playing level with the Tigers most of the game, Prep broke through with a goal at 62 minutes. The Eagles quickly answered with a brilliant strike from Bailey L. from the right side of the 18. Unfortunately, Prep was able to net two more goals before the whistle sounded, with the final result Charlotte Prep 3 - Scholars' Academy 1.
The Eagles returned to practice Tuesday after the holiday weekend and will play Countryside Montessori on Friday, September 11. They then begin a home stand with two home games the following week. Tuesday, September 15 against St. Ann's and Friday, September 18 against Back Creek. Please make plans to come out and support your team and make sure you wear your school colors those days. Go Golden Eagles!

Eagle Wear Coming Soon

This year we are happy to offer new Scholars' Academy Eagle Wear through Teddy's Embroidery Shop, owned and operated by Scholars' Academy parent Cara Ludvik and her father, Teddy Kimer. We will be offering an assortment of shirts (T-shirts and collared polo style), sweatshirts, tote bags, gear bags, etc., with an embroidered logo. As an added bonus, they have very generously offered to return 10% of the sales to the Scholars' Academy PTO general fund as a contribution. Outfitting your child in our new Eagle Wear is a great way to raise money for our school! You will be notified by e-mail when the order form is available on the school's Web site. To place an order, simply download the order form from the Web site when it becomes available, fill it out, and send it in an envelope with a check (made payable to Teddy Kimer) for your child to place in the PTO hamper in his/her homeroom. The order forms will be collected once a week and passed on to the embroidery shop via Cara. As soon as the items are completed, they will be delivered back to your child's classroom. Obviously, the return time will depend upon the volume of orders each week. This service will be available all year. Cara will also have a table set up on campus during the Fall Social so you can see samples of our great new Eagle Wear and place orders at that time, as well. In addition, we may offer occasional one-time orders for screen printed T-shirts through another vendor. Complete order information will be available at that time.

Community Service
Community service projects at Scholars' Academy this year will focus on giving of ourselves via time and service, and donating items we already have to others in need.
Our first project will be a shoe drive in conjunction with Soles 4 Souls (www.soles4souls.org). The drive will begin in mid-September. Look for details in the near future. In the meantime, as you purchase new school shoes for your children, please put away your gently used shoes for this upcoming drive. Also ask neighbors and friends to do the same. "Soles 4 Souls"... pretty much sums up a wonderful way to help others.

Clip Your Box Tops
Look in your cabinets, pantry or fridge. If you see a product with Box Tops for Education written on it, then please take the time to clip the rectangular symbol and send it in to school with your child. The PTO receives 10 cents for each one, and it adds up quickly. Also, if you go to www.boxtops4education.com and click on the "Bonus Offers," you can sign up for a drawing of 500,000 bonus Box Tops worth $50,000. The Box Tops for Education program is a quick and easy way to earn money for our school.
