All remains relatively quiet in the office. We have boxes of teacher stuff and furniture arriving daily, and things are beginning to "stack up". We have a new teacher for our Discoverers II classroom, so our staff is now complete for 2009-2010.
News About Our Staff Discoverers II - Maggie Bell comes to our school from the AIG program in Union County where she taught 4th and 5th grade AIG students. Ms. Bell - who will become Mrs. Rhodes on August 1 - grew up in Union County. Her degree in Elementary Education is from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. She likes reading and running - sometimes with her dog Charlie. Investigators I - Evelyn Metcalf taught last year at Woodlawn School in Davidson. She has a Bachelor's Degree in South Asian Studies from Ohio Weslayan University and a Master's Degree in Education from Kent State University where she coompleted her studies in Gifted Education. Evelyn worked with gifted children in Ohio and with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. She writes poetry and short stories and enjoys painting, reading, traveling, hiking and camping. Evelyn and her husband Kevin have three children - one of them, Sydney will be part of the Apprentice Scholars I class at the Scholars' Academy. Welcome to the Scholars' Academy, Ms. Bell (Rhodes) and Ms. Metcalf! The last week of June we traveled to northern Ohio, at Lake Erie, to visit family, and then to Grass Lake, Michigan where we lived from 1974 - 1984. Grass Lake had a so-typical, small town 4th of July celebration. The day starts with a pancake breakfast at the Baptist church, followed by a parade with horses, old cars and antique tractors, garden tractors, dance troupes and drill teams (no bands this year), Boy Scouts (no Girl Scouts this year), motorcycles, floats from businesses and civic groups, and fire trucks. That is followed with a chicken bar-b-que dinner cooked up by the local rotary club. Mix all that in with good conversation of old friends, and it is a 4th of July that is hard to beat. This summer I have enjoyed reading: Interpreter of Maladies by Jhumpa Lahiri, The Elegance of the Hedgehog by Muriel Barbery, and The Age of American Unreason by Susan Jacoby. The Scholars' Academy needs a Fix-It person. We have some small maintenance tasks that need to be done sometime over the summer. We have burned out flourescent bulbs; loose faucet handles and leaky faucets; stained ceiling tiles that need to be replaced (they have to be cut too); some minor work in the restrooms with door latches, etc; and probably other small jobs I will find as the summer progresses. We will supply materials and pay an hourly rate for anyone who has these skills and would like to do some work for the school over the summer. Please call me at the school office if you are interested. Don't forget to keep checking the Website for updates about school - and have a good summer!
