In the last issue, we asked "What do you like to do outside of school?" Here's what you said:

"I enjoy crochet, quilting, baking or just plain ol' cooking. These crafts are a wonderful way to spend time with children, family and friends. You get a chance to take time out of your busy days/weeks/months/years and do something nice for those you care most for. There is even a chance to create something for someone else (i.e. Mother's Day for the senior women in the church)."
       - Karen Steward, SA parent

"I really like jumping on my trampoline, playing with my friends or creating presentations on Microsoft Powerpoint."
      -  Evan, SA student

"Outside of school, I really enjoy taking the time to help others in need. As we know many families are struggling to feed their families in these tough economic times. One project I am working on is starting a food pantry to help families in the Charlotte area. It will be open in the next month. Please get in touch with me if you'd like to donate non-perishable items."
   - Elizabeth Hijazi, SA Parent
We'd LOVE to hear more! The TIPS Topic for our next issue is "What were you up to during spring break?" Please tell us by sending your submission to mrscholarsacademy@gmail.com by April 24th. We will include your responses in the April 27th issue.

Look forward to hearing from you!

Parents, if your child has an e-mail address and they'd like to receive the newsletter (with your permission of course!), just send their address to mrscholarsacademy@gmail.com and we will be happy to add them to the "mailing list".
Lost&FoundLOST AND FOUND PARADE

Before spring break, we had a "lost & found parade" so-to-speak in the school hallway. Students had a chance to view and claim any lost items before they were packed up and taken to Goodwill.

There is a lost & found cart in the office area. We encourage you and/or your child to check it

periodically if they have misplaced anything at school.

When the lost & found cart is overflowing, we will send out an e-mail notice to let you know
when the next "lost & found parade" will be prior to packing items to take to Goodwill or
another worthy charity.

Thanks for your support!

Dr. Peine's Pen -
Grandparents Join Us on Friday.

We are pleased to welcome our grandparents to the school on Friday, April 17th. We had so much fun with all of them last year, that we wanted to have them visit us again this year, just to check up with what was happening and what has changed at our school. All of our visitors are invited to spend time in a variety of classrooms so they can get an idea of the scope of what students do at the Scholars' Academy. We encourage them to participate in classroom activities. Some things about being in school have changed through the years, and as we are trying something different for our students, we enjoy sharing our program with this special part of our school community, the grandparents. Enjoy your time with us!

The Scholars' Academy has just been informed that we are the recipient of a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities entitled, "Picturing America." The school will receive a collection of 40 high quality reproductions of American art, along with a Teacher Resource book to be used in our literature, social studies, wiritng, and art classes. The prints provide an art framework to supplement the study our students do in the nation's history and culture.

PTO needs your help for the new school year!

As we enter the final quarter of the school year, the PTO is busily lining up interested volunteers to serve in a leadership capacity for 2009-2010.  We are so fortunate to have many current PTO Council members returning for another year and we have been so pleased with the new folks who are stepping up to help out as well.  At this time, we still have a few openings and we would love to hear from any of you who may be interested in these positions.

Secretary- The secretary, an officer of the PTO, works to collect materials and print the school Orientation Packet during the month of August and then works with the other officers during the year to plan the monthly meeting agendas, take and distribute (via email) the monthly meeting minutes, and to attend occasional planning meetings including at least one yearly budget meeting.

Fundraising Chairperson- The fundraising chairperson plans and leads the two major PTO fundraisers in the Fall and Spring, as well as attends the monthly PTO meetings.

Lunch/Pizza Coordinator- We are hoping to make some changes to the pizza ordering process that would make this job even easier for next year.  Until that happens, though, the lunch coordinator will send out the order forms via Room Parent Email, collect order forms monthly, order pizza each month, and line up volunteers to distribute it each Friday.

As always, we will have MANY other volunteer opportunities throughout the year and will soon be sending out more information in that regard.  In the meantime, if you think you might be interested in one of these Council positions, please contact Beth Gage at bdgage@carolina.rr.com.  We look forward to hearing from you!

Night of the Arts volunteers still needed!

There are still several volunteers needed to help out for a little while at this Friday's "Night of the Arts". Some of the volunteer jobs include art set-up, art museum desk and ushers. Most jobs only require an hour of your time while on site at the event and won't preclude you from watching the program.

If you can help out, please contact Jurga Petrikiene at 704-644-2556 or e-mail jurga.petrikiene@gmail.com.
