Pulling together in tough times
It's difficult not to be affected by the tough economic times we are facing. Still, in spite of the added stress, tighter budgets and uncertainties that lie ahead, we see the remarkable resilience of SA families, faculty and staff.
The fact is, when adversity strikes we tend to pull together and focus on what matters. We see families making sacrifices in order to contribute to a school fundraiser. Parents putting in 10-12 hour days finding an hour or two to volunteer. Teachers putting in extra time to help our children excel. Dr. Peine miraculously juggling the multitude of tasks well beyond that of most school administrators. Mrs. Hargrove who is office manager one minute, then school nurse the next. It's the seemingly small contributions of time and money that mean the most because they have ultimately meant giving something up in return.
True, we may not be able to afford new computers, more interactive whiteboards or better furniture. But we will continue to build a community that supports teachers and students and keeps SA families connected.
There's an African proverb that says "Smooth seas do not make skilled sailors". We have rough seas ahead, but if we keep our heads up, our hearts in it and work together, we will find our way. After all, we are all in this together and it's only by working together that we will become "better sailors".
Together we do make a difference! |

Dr. Peine's Pen -
NEWS ABOUT OUR STUDENTS
The next month is a busy one for our students who have won invitations to state level competitions. Our MATHCOUNTS team - Kedar Dange, Connie Zhou, Kavi Jain, and Kevin Rabel - placed first in the regional competition and travel to Durham for the state competition on March 20. Nick Watkins, Kavi Jain, and Parth Thakker will have projects at the state science fair on March 28th. The NC Geography Bee is April 3. Nicholas Lowell, our local winner, scored well enough on the written exam to receive an invitation to the state level competition. Scholars' Academy students scored very well at the recent state chess tournament. The announcement of the results of that competition is in this issue of the newsletter. CALENDAR Some new field trips have been added to the school calendar. Check there for updates. TESTING UPDATE Terra Nova testing will be March 30, 31, April 1, and April 2 for students in grades 3 - 8. There will be no make-up tests for Terra Nova. K - 2 students will do Terra Nova testing during the EOG testing week of May 18th. The Terra Nova 2 is a nationally normed achievement test. The score reports tht we get for our students compare them to other students nationwide rather than just other students from North Carolina. Since we administer this test locally we have the flexibility to do testing closer to the grade level at which we do instruction. Our K students take the first grade test; first grade students take the second grade test, and so on. The Terra Nova at the K - 2 level also helps us fulfil the state requirement that we administer some type of assessment to K - 2 students to measure progress in matehmatics. As with all testing, please have you students to school prior to 9:15am, well rested and with a good breakfast.
The calendar of school events and field trips has been updated and can be found under the Calendar tab on the website. For the earth, Marie E. Trivia-thon Wrap Up Thanks to generous sponsors, tireless volunteers and trivia-savvy students, we raised more than $5,000 in our recent Trivia-thon. Top scorers from each class were treated to ice cream and given a ribbon as a memento. We are pleased to announce the top three school-wide fund raisers: Third-grader Hannah DiBella raised the most money ($387.50) and so will receive a cash prize of $50. Her brother Billy DiBella (kindergarten) was not far behind with a total raised of $382.50, earning a cash prize of $30. Our third-place winner was first-grader William Trowbridge, who raised $270 and will receive a cash prize of $20. Thank you so much to everyone who participated. (If you still have pledge money, it is never too late to send it in! Just have your child place it in the PTO hamper.)

Drop-off and pick-up reminders
The number of SA families is increasing meaning more vehicles for drop-off and pick-up. To help keep cars moving as quickly and safely as possible please follow these guidelines:
- When entering the traffic circle, please pull all the way up to the mailbox allowing more cars to pull up during drop off and pick up.
- In the mornings, if the bus is unloading, carefully pull around the bus and begin drop off at the mailbox.
- During pick up, once the parking lot line is full (line #1), start two parallel lines at the BASC mailbox (lines #2and3) and alternate entering the traffic circle immediately following the parking lot line.
- Always be mindful of foot traffic. We have many parents who park and walk their children in. Not to mention, our staff entering the school.
- Drive slowly and stay alert. There are cars and people coming and going in many directions.
- Be patient and courteous to other drivers and pedestrians.
Thanks for making drop off and pick up easier for all of us! | |
