More FIRST Lego League News...

Parent coaches Sabrina Brown and Cheryl Drake-Bowers  along with David Johnston managed a spirited Scholars Academy team We the People in the First Lego League competition.  Our younger team comprised of fourth and fifth graders exhibited incredible leadership, commitment, confidence, and determination against teams much older. They were  competitive in completing robot missions in only 2 minutes, researching an important climate problem and proposing innovative solutions, and presenting their proposal creatively before a panel of judges. Additionally, there were team interviews and  a spontaneous team assignment with only minutes to coordinate and execute. We are proud of our SmartBots team that brought home a trophy.  And We the People showed gracious professionalism can begin at any age which we are proud of too.  We the People members included: Emma Barnes, Annika Bowers, Artemas Brown, Lawson Gage, Robert Gleason, Sebastian Henderson, Tarek Kaouk, Alice Liu, Isabelle Thomas, and Michael Yang. Thanks for all your hard work and representing Scholoars Academy extremely well.

News About Our School

Through a very generous donation from one of our grandparents, the Scholars' Academy will have new playground equipment for our K - 4 students.  The structure has been ordered and is scheduled for installation on Friday, February 27th and Saturday, February 28th (weather permitting).  We need volunteers for various aspects of this project on February 27th from 12:30pm-4:30pm and Saturday, February 28th from 8:00am until completion.  Please email Debbie Starling, rstarling1@carolina.rr.com or call (704) 364-5648 if you can help with this "community build" special event.  Some of this will be heavy work, so we need dads.  No children please.

News About Our Students

 Nicholas Lowell
(Pieper) was the winner of the Scholars' Academy Geography Bee and has completed the written test that will be scored to determine if he will be a contestant at the NC Geography Bee.
Connie Zhou (Turano) was the winner of the Scholars' Academy Spelling Bee and the Regional Charter School Spelling Bee. Connie will represent charter schools at the Charlotte Observer Spelling Bee to be held at Imaginon on Monday, February 2 at 10:00am.
Both of our winners are very poised contestants and we are very pleased to have them as representatives of our school at these events.

The calendar of school events and field trips has been updated and can be found under the Calendar tab on the website.

Trivia-thon Pledge Forms Going Out Monday, February 2

Please have students ask friends and family members to "sponsor" them in the Trivia-thon by pledging monetary support.  On the day of the event, students will be asked a series of grade-appropriate, multi-topic, non-curriculum questions.  The results will be scored and students will collect the pledged amounts from their sponsors.  This is the PTO's major fundraiser for the year.  Last year we raised over $8,000 from this event, and we are hoping for another strong showing in 2009.

The Trivia-thon will take place on Thursday, February 19, during the Teacher / Staff Appreciation lunch.  While teachers and staff enjoy an off-site luncheon, parent volunteers will supervise the classrooms and conduct the Trivia-thon.
Prizes will be awarded for top scorers in each class and for top school-wide fundraisers.

Thank you in advance for your support!

We Need Just 5 More VIC Card Links!

We currently have 95 families "linked" to Scholars' Academy through Harris-Teeter's "Together in Education" program.  If we can reach the magical number of 100 linked families, Scholars' Academy will be eligible to nominate one or more of our teachers for a "Teachers of Excellence Award", which includes a $1,000 cash award for the teacher and $1,000 cash for our school.  So, if you have not yet "linked" your VIC card to our school, please do so; if you are already linked, please consider asking local family members or friends who might link to us.

Thank you so much!
