GOOD JOB!

Mrs. Miller's 3rd and 4th grade students
created "Get Well Soon" cards for
the Recovering Soldiers at Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington, DC.
The cards will be distributed to some of the thousands of men and women who are recovering from injuries in military and veterans hospitals.  The cards were very creative and the messages extremely poignant. We are so proud of our students!

thanksTHANK YOU to the following volunteers who have donated their time to reading in the Kindergarten and First Grade classrooms as part of the Reading First program - focused on promoting literacy.

Thank you to Rebecca Greiner for coordinating the Scholars' Academy note card project.  Rebecca and her helpers Jurga Petrikis, Cheri Dawson, Melissa Brown, Debbie Steele, Suzanne Huffman, Julie Dibella, Toni Hemming, Jigisha Gor and Beth Gage hung the student note card designs in the hallway, posted the sign for the carpool line, tabuated and sorted orders and distributed the orders to the students.
Thanks to this team, we had the largest note card order in our school's history.  Their efforts are truly appreciated.

Dr. Peine's Pen -
Bee Time at the Scholars' Academy.

January is always Bee season at the Scholars' Academy.  The School Geography Bee will be held on Wednesday, January 14.  Preliminary rounds to determine the grade level representatives (in grades 5 - 8) are completed in the social studies classroom using a written test provided by National Geographic.  All of our upper level students are eligible to take the test.  The school winner takes a written test to qualify for the NC state level competition.  Mr.Yodice organizes the school Geography Bee.
The spell-offs to determine the classroom representatives to the spelling bee in grades 2 - 8 are also completed in the classrooms. The spell-offs are open to all students who wish to participate.  Any one who wishes to have words to study for the bee can find them at www.spellingbee.com.  Look for "Spell It!".  The Scholars' Academy Bee will be held on Tuesday January 20.  The school winner advances to a charter school Spelling Bee, and the winner there represents Mecklenburg County charter schools at the county spelling bee sponsored by the Charlotte Observer.  Ms. Bolick organizes the school Spelling Bee.  We regret that, due to space limitations, we are unable to invite family members to our School Bees.

CHECK-OUT REMINDER - If you wish to take your child out of school between 3:00pm and dismissal, please be at the school at 3:00pm for check out.  It is disruptive to classrooms to have students checkout after 3:00pm.  The end of the day, no matter the hour, is a tough time to keep student attention.  When we interrupt a class to get a student to the office, it is problematic to maintain the flow of a lesson.  We will not dismiss students at 3:45pm. This is a security issue.  If you wish to pick your child up at that time you may wait in front of the entrance or in the office.  Thank you for complying with these check-out procedures.

On behalf of the staff, I wish to thank you for your generosity during the holiday season.

Check the Calendar on the website for field trip information and other scheduled school events.
