CARPOOL CAUTION
Reminder for all who pick up via car pool line. Once the line parallel to the BASC mailbox is lined up to end of the driveway entrance, please start another line parallel to the line by the mailbox, then once line #1 circling the parking lot is finished pulling up to the driving circle, line #2 and line #3 can proceed to the driving circle by alternating. This is the best solution we have available to help alleviate the congestion on Endhaven Lane.
Thanks for your help!!

SAY NO TO ANTIBACTERIAL If you were lucky enough to hear Dr. Michael Hudson, dean of the Biology Department at UNCC on Charlotte Talks, you're probably wondering what our kids are washing their hands with at home and school. If you are interested in the science and research behind this, check out this link Http://buenavistamall.com/MRSA.htm. Otherwise, take it from a microbiologist and please do not send any products that say "anti-bacterial" to school anymore. The active ingredient you want to avoid is triclosan. Hand sanitizers that contain alcohol are fine.
Thanks to all the families who participated in the Go Green water bottle initiative. Reducing plastic consumption and reusing these canteens is a step towards a greener campus!

Dr. Peine's Pen -
Night of the Notables
Every year we welcome notable people from the past, present, other cultures and places to visit our school. Leonardo da Vinci, Elizabeth Dole, Einstein, Margaret Thatcher, Bill Gates, and Queen Elizabeth I have been on our guest list in previous years. Members of our school community are invited to share this evening with the Notables in our classrooms. The format for this year will be slightly different than it has been in the past. Notables in grades K - 4 will greet guests in their respective classrooms. Notables in grades 5 - 8 will meet guests in the gym. All Notables will remain in their classrooms for the duration of the event - they will not be visiting other classrooms this year. In school visits will occur during Buddy sessions between the classes. Prior to the event, we suggest that guests consider some questions they would like to pose to our Notables. We highly recommend that you think beyond the facts of a persons to deeper questions that might relate to current events. For example, you might want to ask George Washington his opinion of the most recent election in the United States, or you might pose a question to Bill Gates about the current economic situation. Eighth grade students will be accepting donations to help fund their trip to Washington, DC in the spring. Please come prepared to enjoy this exciting showcase of eminent people at our Night of the Notables from 6:00pm - 7:30pm on December 16. Since this will be the final newsletter before the holidays and the new year, I wish everyone who is a part of our school community a joyous holiday. For the earth,
Marie E. Peine, Ph.D., Director Metrolina Regional Scholars' Academy 7000 Endhaven Lane Charlotte, NC 28277 PH: (704) 503-1112 FAX:(704) 503-1183

Boxtops Pay Off
We recently sent in our first batch of boxtops to the "Boxtops for Education" program. (A big thank you to Kim Szentesi-Thomas for doing this.) The unofficial count was over 3,500 boxtops, which means over $350 for our PTO coffers. Thanks so much for all your participation in this effort! There will be another mail-in later in the school year, so please send in your boxtops anytime. Have your child place them in the PTO hamper in his classroom and we'll take it from there.
Citipass Books Still Available Thank you again for supporting our Charlotte Citipass fundraiser earlier this year. If you find yourself needing additional books (either for yourself or as a holiday gift) you can purchase them through the link below, and our PTO will get credit for the sale. The order will go directly to Citipass, and they will ship your book(s) directly to you. https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=879579

Community Service Update
As you purchase new coats to stay warm against the winter chill, please remember to put aside your outgrown or no longer desired coats for Scholars' Academy's participation in WSOC-TV Steve Udelson's Coats for Kids drive. Coats may be new or used; child or adult size. Any shape, size, color, or style appreciated!. All donated coats benefit Crisis Assistance Ministries where they are will warm Mecklenburg residents. Coat collection will begin after the winter break. Stay tuned for details. So bundle up, and donate your old coats so that others may be warmed by your generosity. Speaking of generosity, many thanks, again, to all who donated to A Child's Place. A beautiful thank you card is displayed in Mrs. Moschel's classroom. When I dropped off the donations, one of the staff members burst into tears because she was so touched by Scholars' Academy's compassion for others. I thank you as well. Sincerely, Mary Tayal, Scholars' Academy Community Service Project Coordinator
