One of our parents Ed Flynn (JP- 8th Turano) is our Middle School tennis coach and led MRSA to a second place finish in the CGAA last season. This is an article about his 'day' job as tennis coach for Myers Park High School whose Girls team just wrapped up an UNDEFEATED season with a 4A State Championship against East Chapel Hill high.

This is a great example of the quality of volunteers we have working with us at MRSA.

School sign looks like new again!

Thanks to the talent and generosity of Bill and Julie DiBella (Billy/Lloyd, Hannah/Smith), we have a freshly painted sign in the driving circle featuring our school name and logo. The Dibellas provided the original sign four years ago and recently refurbished it. thanks

Thanks for continuing to be the caretakers of  our school sign!

animal notecardNOTE CARDS
Scholars' Academy artists have created beautiful note cards once again.  This year the theme is animals.  The cards will have student art work printed on the front of a heavy stock paper and are blank on the inside.  Envelopes are included.  Cards will be available for purchase for $1.00 each.  They make wonderful gifts.  Proceeds benefit our school's programs.

The note card designs will be on display in the school hallway.  Please view artist's designs and fill out the order form to purchase the note cards.  Attach a check to the completed form and return to the office by Friday, Dec. 4th.  Please make checks out to The Scholars' Academy.  Orders will be distributed before winter break.
The forms will soon come home with your child so, please check their homework folders/ backpacks.

Volunteer Hours Count!

Remember, if you are volunteering for the school whether it's chaperoning field trips, outdoor lunch, classroom events, school grounds maintenance, coaching sports or the myriad of other tasks parents take on . . . your volunteer hours count.

A simple way to log your hours is to send your hours periodically to Beth Gage at bdgage@carolina.rr.com. All volunteer hours sent will be totalled for the school year.

These volunteer hours may help secure future grants and foundation funds for the school. Thanks for all you do!

Dr. Peine's Pen - Observations

The first official day of winter is a month away, but the feeling of the season is in the air.  This time of year is paradoxical - nature is resting, but humans are busy, busy, busy with holiday events and activities.  One thing I like about this season is getting out the coats and heavy jackets that we haven't worn for a year - and finding some forgotten cash in the pocket!  How much fun is that?

Observations of another sort are the ones I have been doing in classrooms for the past three weeks.  Some things I have seen include: a discussion of appropriate social interaction, critical thinking about Tiz and Toz, measuring with customary and non-traditional units, reading comprehension tasks, dialy life in Ancient Egypt, using models to gather eviddence, identifying change, investigating the movement of water on surfaces, comparisons of greek myths, an inquiry lesson using the Cabri Jr. calculator method, a concept development lesson focusing on Never Cry Wolf, paragraph development, introducing family members in Spanish, the origin of family personal names in Chinese, introductory basketball skills, review of color wheel complements, and identifying song form and rhythmic patterns.  I observed students attending to lectures, doing experiments, using models and other types of independent investigations, small group projects and small group discussions, question and answer, and a variety of strategies (Taba, Parnes, Bloom, etc.) that are highly recommended as appropriate for use with gifted learners.  I saw teachers and assistants who quietly and not so quietly got students excited about learning.  I wish I could have attended a school such as the Scholars' Academy.

Night of the Notables is December 16 from 6:00pm - 7:30pm. We are experimenting with a different format this year. Details in the next newsletter.

It is holiday time.  Parenting for High Potential, the magazine for parents published by the National Association for Gifted Children lists these items on their recommended toy list for this season.  Check with us in the office for a copy of the list and description of the recommendations.

Field trips are listed on the Calendar on the website.

we add upWE ADD UP

Dear Families,

We are very excited to share our latest school fundraiser with you.  Here at The Scholars' Academy there has been a continuing interest in the environment, so we decided to be a part of a program called "We Add Up."

WE ADD UP is a global campaign using organic cotton t-shirt that literally "counts you in" in the fight against global warming. Every shirt is printed by hand with a unique number. YOUR number represents your place in the sequential global count of all the people who are taking steps to help stop climatechange. As the count grows, we demonstrate to the world that "WE ADD UP."
On the back of each shirt is a word or phrase that describes an action almost anyone can take to reduce their carbon footprint - the contribution their lifestyle makes to greenhouse gases - such as, Unplug, Lights Off, Carpool, Hybrid, Bike, Buy Local, and 18 others. You choose which action you are committed to doing and get counted in. No one can do everything. Everyone can do something. And, WE ADD UP.
The goal is to get millions of
people around the world counted in and committed to helping stop global warming. With our combined effort, we can create a healthy, thriving world for generations to come.
