- A BIG Thank You to the following families for providing lunch to the teachers and staff at the Scholars' Academy on their October 31st workday:
Alexander (Cassie, Joshua), Amin (Kaelan, Kieran), Bhagia (Riya, Roanak), Dawson (Erika, Hunter), Gor (Sagan, Kareena), Greiner (Susanna, Mary Kate, Caroline), Keel (Grace), Martin (Ryan, Joshua), Racine (Carter, Allison), Ross-Pitts (Trevor), and Schwanke (Kaylee).
- Many thanks to the strong parents that helped move so many bookcases. Many thanks to Barnes and Noble Sharon Corners for the donation.
We were able to fill a 10'x20' storage unit PLUS we put book cases in every classroom. These parents were instumental in getting the job done: Katherine Pair Jay Reynolds Thom & Leah Trowbridge Heidi Povinelli Triangle Rental Car (John and Sharon Molina) We still need some help. As not to disrupt classes this year too much we needed to rent a temporary storage bin. We are looking for a storage warehouse or garage or place. Right now we have the 10 x 20 unit, but it is costly to rent monthly. If you can help with a storage place please email JFIRR@aol.com.
- We had approximately 120 prospective parents attend the Open House held on Saturday, November 8th. The Open House ran very smoothly, thanks to all the parent volunteers who came to help out. Thanks to all who set-up, cleaned up and assisted in the classrooms. We couldn't have done it without you!

Volunteer Hours Count!
Remember, if you are volunteering for the school whether it's chaperoning field trips, outdoor lunch, classroom events, school grounds maintenance, coaching sports or the myriad of other tasks parents take on . . . your volunteer hours count.
A simple way to log your hours is to send your hours periodically to Beth Gage at bdgage@carolina.rr.com. All volunteer hours sent will be totalled for the school year. These volunteer hours may help secure future grants and foundation funds for the school. Thanks for all you do!

Dr. Peine's Pen - Staff Development News
You may have noticed that there were several staff members absent from their classrooms during the Fall Festival last week. Ms. Muse, Ms. Cleary, Ms. Moschel, and Ms. Turano were attending the National Science Teacher's (NSTA) annual meeting in Charlotte. Ms. Pieper was at a math workshop. Ms. Bolz and Ms. Hu attended the Foreign Language Teachers Association meeting. I was at the annual conference of The National Association for Gifted Children, held in Tampa, Florida. The day before the conference officially began I attended two workshops led by members of the NAGC Board of Directors. Those sessions were "Using Products to Challenge and Differentiate" and "Leading Successful Guided Discussion Groups for Parents of Gifted Children". During the conference I focused a lot of my attention on sessions about technology and gifted children. I also spent time with some friends of the school: Dr. Sandra Kaplan, Dr. George Betts, Maureen Neihart, Dr. Larry Coleman, Michael Clay Thompson, and Dr. Jim Delisle. Professional development is an important part of the growth of all educators. We are fortunate to have the resources to provide the opportunity for our staff members to attend conferences that reflect their interests and support their professional growth.

Community Service Update
The generosity of our MRSA family is awe inspiring! After only one week of our two week drive, we have collected bags and bags of donations for A Child's Place which supports homeless CMS students. A "wish list" can be located at www.achild'splace.org . We will continue to collect donations through Friday, Nov. 14th. Two representatives from A Child's Place visited the second grade classes last Tuesday. They read an adorable story about a homeless mouse then led the children in a discussion regarding homeless children in our area. I was particularly touched by our children's ability to glean from the story the tremendous hardships homeless children must over come to keep up in school due to many moves, disruptions, and losses. If forced to move from your home and allowed only 5 items, what would you bring? What would your children bring?
