Volunteer Hours Count!
Remember, if you are volunteering for the school whether it's chaperoning field trips, outdoor lunch, classroom events, school grounds maintenance, coaching sports or the myriad of other tasks parents take on . . . your volunteer hours count. A simple way to log your hours is to send your hours periodically to Beth Gage at bdgage@carolina.rr.com. All volunteer hours sent will be totalled for the school year. These volunteer hours may help secure future grants and foundation funds for the school. Thanks for all you do!

Drop-off Reminders
In the mornings, the school bus needs clearance in front of the school to drop off the bus riders. Please make certain that you do not park or linger in the drop off area as this is problematic for the bus driver. The general procedure is to pull up to the end of the sidewalk by the mailbox for drop off and pick up. This allows access for more vehicles and prevents the bus parking area from becoming clogged. Thank you for your understanding!
Last Call for Old Cell Phones
Our PTO is collecting cell phones you no longer use; have your child place them in the PTO hamper in his classroom. We will collect all the phones and send them to PaceButler Corporation as part of its "Cell Phones for Education" program. PaceButler will send us a check for the value of the phones, which will be redeployed in the U.S. and developing countries. Learn more about the program at their website: www.pacebutler.com. Thank you! Debbie Steele |

We have two crates of lost and found items in the office by the sink. Items not picked up by October 31 will be given to a worthy organization.

Dr. Peine's Pen - Admission Information for 2009-2010
The admission process for the 2009-2010 school year is underway. Our first Prospective Student/Parent Open House is November 8 from 2:30pm - 4:00pm. We will have staff, parents, and students available to talk with families who are interested in enrollment at the Scholars' Academy. As always our current parents are our strongest PR group, and we appreciate your efforts on behalf of the school.
We are beginning to receive many calls and messages from prospective parents, and there is some inaccurate information circulating about the admissions criteria - especially the IQ standards that are used to determine eligibility. In order to be automatically eligible for admission a child must score at least three standard deviations above the mean of the particular aptitude test that is administered. That score is approximately 145 Full Scale IQ or above, but this depends on the test that is taken. A child may be automatically eligible for admission, but this does not guarantee that a seat will be available. To be considered for admission, a child must score at least two standard deviations above the mean of a given aptitude test. This score is approximately 130 Full Scale IQ or above, but again this depends on the test, as all tests have different standardization norms. These criteria are stated in the charter and guide the admissions committee in its decision making. For students who score in the two to three standard deviations range, there is no absolute score that is considered a "cut-off" number. The admissions committee evaluates the entire application package of each student who scores in this range. In a recent comment from a prospective parent I learned that last year the "cut-off" score was a 139 Full Scale IQ. This is incorrect information. If you have any questions about admissions, please call the office for clarification or attend a Dialogue with the Director - Admissions session on November 5 from 6:00pm - 7:00pm. Again, thank you for helping spread the word about the Scholars' Academy.

SCHOLARS' ACADEMY KEY GROUPS As a charter school, we have many advantages and freedoms that traditional public schools do not. This freedom, however, means that we do not have the resources available that traditional public schools enjoy such as the provision of a facility, larger administrative staff, playground equipment, adequate transportation and so on. In essence, the school is what we make it with the resources that we have. In an effort to help understand this dynamic, below is a quick summary of three key groups in our school: Board of Directors As a charter school, we are independent from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School Board and have our own governance board comprised of parents, members at large, the school director (non-voting) and a PTO representative (non-voting). The current board has 12 members with a diverse set of skills and experience to help realize the school's mission. The mandate of the board is to ensure that the school meets with all laws, policies and regulations set forth by the NC State Board of Education (Department of Public Instruction; Office of Charter Schools), manages the school's overall budget and provide a facility in which the school can operate. The long term goal and current main focus of the board is to provide a permanent facility for the school. For more information on the Board of Directors, please contact Evan Kettler at 704-577-4901 (evankett@carolina.rr.com). Development Committee Charter schools do not receive school bonds and are not provided land or a facility in which to operate, hence creating an additional burden on operating expenses. The Development Committee is responsible for generating supplemental financial resources through an "annual drive" to help finance the school year operating expenses. The 2008/09 goal is $275,000. In addition to the annual drive, the Development Committee organizes events such as Grandparents' Day, as a part of developing and cultivating the school's base of support. For more information on the Development Committee, please contact Cheryl Drake-Bowers at 704-821-8184 (aybeecee@windstream.net) or Shaila Patel at 704-504-5851 (shailap@yahoo.com). Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO) Parent and teacher involvement in our children's schools is essential. This is especially true for charter schools such as ours. The PTO is the "grassroots" organization responsible for supporting the mission of the school by 1) fostering communication among parents, faculty, staff and students; 2) helping to promote a comfortable, welcoming school environment; 3) encouraging and providing volunteer opportunities and, 4) fundraising to support the mandate of the PTO including supplemental school equipment, teacher classroom funds, extracurricular programs, social and curricular events and teacher/staff support. The 2008/09 fundraising goal to meet projected expenses is $17,850. For more information on the PTO, please contact Toni Hemming at 704-609-7420 (tmccurdy@carolina.rr.com) or Melissa Brown at 704-752-8321 (melissa@vbmg.com). The initial Greenway trash clean up and stream monitoring was a great success. Mrs. Turano, along with Mrs. Peiper, involved forty 7th and 8th graders to pick up trash and monitor the water quality along the newly opened 4 Mile Creek Greenway. MRSA has adopted this portion of the stream and will be involved in future clean up and water monitoring projects. Two Greenway personnel from Mecklenburg County Parks and Rec talked to the group about the Greenway in Charlotte and the effects of water pollution in our area. The children picked up 20+ bags of trash. Kedar Dange found the most unusual item; a life sized plastic swan. Amber Adams proved the most passionate trash collector as she fell into the creek 8 times! Kudos to all the kids and teachers for a fun-filled and philanthropic activity!
The next upcoming Community Service Project is a collection for A Childs Place (www.achildsplace.org.) This agency serves homeless students within CMS. Letters about this wonderful organization and a "wish list" of items will be sent home with your child/children next week. A representative from A Childs Place will be on campus Nov. 4th discussing the hardships of homelessness in an age appropriate manner.
A coat drive benefiting Crisis Assistance Ministry will be held after the winter break. As you purchase new coats for your children, please save all gently used coats and sweaters for WSOC-TV Steve Udelson's Coats for Kids. All coats go to those in the greatest need.

Dear Coach Charlotte Townley, What an awesome tournament game! You did a fine job coaching our soccer team. We are very proud of all the Scholars' Academy Soccer players. The spirit of competitiveness in the face of a final loss shone through as the kids fought on to come back from 2-0 to tie the game. The sidelines were buzzing as we played our first ever overtime. The Moms' were so into the game, "mini heart attacks"abounded. All of us felt for you Charlotte, as you ran to your brother when he was down on the field. We are thankful that Daniel was able to walk away from injury. We thank you for choosing us for your first foray into head coaching and giving the Golden Eagles Soccer Team their first Winning Season of 5 - 4, in just three very short years. Our appreciation is boundless to the Townleys: Debbie & Glen, the ultimate Soccer Family for pulling this team together and an exciting season. We thank John & Patty Watkins (Nick - Turano) for creating this team, George Triana for special coaching, and Heidi Povinelli for organization and team spirit. Mostly, we want to honor your eighth graders (Turano) for so valiantly playing in the final game of their Scholars' Academy careers: Emily Matheson our fearless team co-captain watched from the sidelines due to a concussion from this team a week earlier, Victoria Triana our super striker scored many of the season's goals and the team's 2 tournament goals, Daniel Townley, team leader, outstanding corner kicker, scorer and master of all positions, Paul Barnes the ever vigilant mid fielder, Harish Pudukodu our sturdy defender in backfield and occasional goalie, and Patrick Povinelli with the heart, speed and talent to play anywhere he is needed. Thank you for an awesome season! Your sports fan, Janet Barnes
