Upcoming MRSA Community Service Projects
- The first section of the Four Mile Creek Greenway opened Oct 11th. MRSA has contracted with Char/Meck Parks and Recreation to adopt this portion of the steam. This section can be entered via a new parking lot on Johnston Road just north of Endhaven. Mrs. Turano will take students to this area on Oct 23rd for the first clean up and water quality monitoring.
- Donations for A Child's Place (www.achildsplace.org) will begin Nov 3rd and run for 2 weeks. A Child's Place supports homeless CMS students. More information about this great program as well as a "wish list" of items will be coming home with your child in mid October. Look for, and admire, posters around the school made by Erika Dawson and the second graders regarding this project.
- As the weather changes and you purchase coats for your children, please save your gently used coats for WSOC-TV's Steve Udelson's Coats for Kids drive. This will take place after Winter break. More details to follow as the date nears.

Dr. Peine's Pen - Student/Parent/Teacher Conferences.
October 16 and October 17 are the dates for our annual conferences. On conference days students do not come to school, but parents do. Conferences come in many formats at the Scholars' Academy. We have traditional conferences where reading levels, writing samples, and mathematics progress are discussed. Ms. Smith and Ms. Miller use a more of a tag team method since they share two groups of parents. At the upper level, conferences are student led. Each of these formats is discussed in educational research (pro and con) and we have selected the methods that best suit the needs of our families and students. Student led conferences put the responsibility for explaining progress (or lack of progress) with the student. We have revised the procedure this year so that students have more ownership of material and methods. The teachers have revised expectations so that they more closely reflect specific content areas. Parents who are unable to attend on conference days may call at a later date to schedule a make-up conference. SPECIAL NOTE: Enrichment teachers will be at school during parent conference hours. If you would like to talk with any of our enrichment staff, please email the teacher through the Contact Form on each teacher's pages on the website, www.scholarsacademy.org or call the school office to set up an appointment. This week marks the end of our Annual Fund Drive. The money you are donating funds the operations of the school. All of the operations - from the Apples in aftercare to the Zoology reference that was purchased for upper level science this year. These are uncertain economic times and fund raising is challenging, but I hope each of you is able to support the Annual drive in some way. We appreciate it.
On Thursday, October 30 we observe the 9th annual Scholars' Academy Fall Classroom Festival. This school tradition began as a pumpkin carving party in 2000. In the early years of the school every child went home with a carved (in some fashion) pumpkin. Some classes still do the carving, but the celebration has morphed into other forms in some rooms. We are glad to have parents, grandparents and other family members at the school to carve pumpkins, eat candy corn and celebrate the fall with us. For the earth, Marie E. Peine, Ph.D., Director Metrolina Regional Scholars' Academy director@scholarsacademy.org |
The Annual Drive Kicks-Off! September 22nd - October 17th
174 families will = 100% participation It is the final week of the Annual Drive! Thank you to the 64 families who have pledged their support to the Scholar's Academy. We are hoping to hear from our remaining 110 families this week to reach 100% participation! Every single pledge makes a difference and helps close the gap between our target goal of $275,000 and our contributions to date of $131,969! Please consider the following: · If 40 grandparents or friends pledged $30 each, the amount needed to fund one child would be achieved. The goal of $1,150 per child becomes more possible by extending the invitation to others to help support your children's education. · Recall the excitement you felt when you first heard about the Scholar's Academy as a free, public school focused on meeting the needs of highly gifted children. Your contribution helps the Scholar's Academy continue to fulfill it's mission while also making it possible for other families to experience that same excitement for their child. · Your Annual Drive gift contributes to what makes the Scholar's Academy different than other local public schools, such as: low student to teacher ratios, highly qualified and certified teachers, dedicated classroom assistants, and a variety of enrichment courses. As the Scholar's Academy continues to grow, the Annual Drive contributions can help to ensure these important elements of the school program remain possible. Tips: · Pledge now and pay later. Your commitment today is due by June 30, 2009. · Obtain extra Pledge Forms. Pledge Forms are available as follows: - Download a Form from the school web site/Development/Document Manager/Pledge Form - Anytime from Jan Hargrove in the office - During Parent Conferences on 10/16 and 10/17 in the office
Together we can achieve our goal so we can all look forward to the continued success of the Scholar's Academy. Thank you in advance for your support and your generosity!

Reading Volunteers Needed (English and Spanish speakers) Please consider volunteering to read a book in the Kindergarten and/or 1st grade classrooms at the Scholar's Academy. Both English and Spanish books are available for reading. Details: · You do not need to have a student in Kindergarten or 1st grade; everyone is welcome and encouraged to participate! · You can volunteer as often as you'd like (one time or we can create a schedule based on your availability). · Plan to spend about 30 minutes in the classroom to read a book that has been generously donated to the school thru a partnership between The Wachovia Foundation and Scholastic as a means to promoting literacy.
