CAR POOL/PICK UP REMINDERS
With the continued growth in our numbers, we also have more vehicles at pick up time. As a "tenant" of the Bristish American School of Charlotte, we are under certain restrictions that preclude us from making any significant changes to our car pool flow.
If you go to the PTO homepage and click on "parking MRSA", this will provide you with a good visual for traffic flow. Here's how it works:
- Carpool line #1 begins by forming a circle in our parking lot, without blocking the outgoing lanes;
- Carpool line #2 begins to the far right of the BASC mailbox;
- Carpool line #3 begins parallel to carpool line #2 to the left of the BASC mailbox; hence forming two parallel lines;
- Once the school bus exits the parking lot, carpool line #1 proceeds and drives up to the school mailbox in the driving circle; the first car in line must pull all the way up to the mailbox for pick up with each car pulling up accordingly;
- Once carpool line #1 has proceeded, carpool line #2 and #3 alternate to the pick up line and pull up accordingly.
Important to remember:
- Please pull up in the driving circle as close to the vehicle in front of you as safely possible, watching for foot traffic
- If you are in carpool for pick up, do not get out of your car; your rider(s) will come to you. .
- Remind your children/riders to be on the lookout for you.
- Always load on the right.
- If you need to buckle up little ones, please pull off slowly past the mailbox and park along the fence to the right of the driveway.
- With combined car pick up and foot traffic, be extra careful and drive slowly.
- Most of all, be patient!

Parent volunteers make all the difference! Many thanks to Renee Aslop and Cary Probst for sprucing up the front entrance of the school in time for fall. The planters look beautiful. A special thanks to the "Operation Ants" crew of John Brown and Trent Pitts. A nasty job, but someone had to do it! Much appreciated.

Dr. Peine's Pen - Our Annual Drive
As you drop your child off at school, consider what (s)he might be doing in the classroom today. Every core content area will be covered. Today may also be a Chinese/PE day, or Spanish/music day, or an art/strings day. Or perhaps this is the day your child visits the library. Your contribution to our annual fund has an impact, in some way, on every aspect of your child's school program including highly qualified teachers, classroom assistants, small classes, enrichment courses, the bus for field trips, shampoo for the carpet, and other school necessities. The funds collected in the Scholars' Academy Annual Drive are very important for the support of a broad spectrum of school operations. Thank you for any gift of time, expertise, or money that enhances the school experience for the students at Metrolina Regional Scholars' Academy. TDAP Immunization - Students in the 6th grade who have not provided proof of an updated immunization with the TDAP booster will not be allowed to return to school after October 30. Your doctor's office can provide you with the immunization form at the time of the procedure. NO EXCEPTIONS to this state requirement.
Come out and support your winning Eagles soccer team! We have won 3 out of our 4 games! This will be our last home game! So your last chance to come out and watch!
Rick Thames, editor of The Charlotte Observer, spoke with our American History I and American History II students on Friday, September 25. His prepared remarks covered a variety of topics with the central message being the importance of being well-informed and the role of the modern newspaper in providing information. He spoke about the different forms that the modern newspaper takes, mentioning that Observer.com gets over 2 million hits per month. He invited one of the classes to visit the Observer newsroom. Mr. Yodice is planning that trip. He remarked to us that our students were extremely well-informed and asked very insightful questions. Thank you to Ms. Moschel's class for doing a "playground pick-up" on Wednesday. Sometimes we have so much fun at outdoor lunch and at recess that we forget that pieces of trash from just one classroom can make the playground look, well, trashy. I appreciate that the class took the time for a clean-up. For the earth, Marie E. Peine, Ph.D., Director Metrolina Regional Scholars' Academy

2008/09 School Directory Update Many thanks to all who sent in their information sheet for this year's school directory. Over 70% of parents have requested a hard copy; therefore, we will be providing a hard copy to each family. Please note that if you have NOT sent in your form, or emailed Patty with your family's information only your child's name will appear in the directory. We do not carry over information from the previous school year. Each year, we must update each and every family. Your copy of the school directory will be sent home with your child (if you have more than one child attending the school, only one copy will be sent). The directory should be ready for distribution in October. Thank you. | |

More Ways to Support Scholars' Academy PTO: BI-LO's boostersplus program Enroll in this program, and 1% of your purchases throughout the school year will be donated to our PTO. You can download an enrollment card from the PTO section of the website, have it scanned at checkout at a BI-LO store, and that's it! Here is the link to download the card: http://metrolina.nc.schoolwebpages.com/education/components/docmgr/default.php?sectiondetailid=517&fileitem=895&catfilter=ALL
GoodSearch.com and GoodShop.com www.GoodSearch.com is a search engine, powered by Yahoo, that donates a penny with every search to the school of your choice. www.GoodShop.com has links to more than 500 online stores, which will donate a portion of every sale made through GoodShop to the school of your choice. Their list of participating merchants is impressive, including amazon, gap, lands end, l.l.bean, staples, itunes, the apple store, Travelocity and expedia. So next time you are shopping online, get to your merchant's website through GoodShop and earn money for our PTO in the process. We have already raised close to $60 this year.
Target's Take Charge of Education program Use a Target Visa or check card (linked to your checking account) and Target will donate 1% of your purchases to us. According to a reliable source, the process is easy: "You just need to bring in a personal check, which they void, then it's ready in about a week. Once you have the number, you can link it to the school." Learn more or sign up at www.target.com/tcoe or at any Target store.
Donate Old Cell Phones During October, send in old cell phones you no longer use; have your child place them in the PTO hamper in his classroom. We will collect all the phones and send them to PaceButler Corporation as part of its "Cell Phones for Education" program. PaceButler will send us a check for the value of the phones, which will be redeployed in the U.S. and developing countries. Learn more about the program at their website: www.pacebutler.com
Coke Products Rewards Program www.mycokerewards.com/schools allows us to collect donated "points" from participating families and redeem them for a variety of school-related merchandise. How it works: Register at the My Coke Rewards site, then enter codes from packages of Coke products to accumulate points. You can then donate these points to our school's account at the website. Eligible products include Coke, Dasani, Minute Maid and Powerade. As always, thank you all so much for your support! Debbie Steele PTO Fundraising Chair

The photo release, media release and student work sample release forms will be made available at the parent-teacher conferences scheduled for October 16th and 17th. Simply pick up the forms when you come for your conference, fill them out and drop them in the PTO hamper in your child's classroom. If you wish to do this prior to conferences, go to the website and click on documents. Download and print the "MRSA photo and video release form", then have your child place in it the PTO hamper in their classroom. Thank you.

A Word about GRANTS: Grants are gifts of money given by foundations, government agencies, corporations or others for the purpose of carrying out specific programs or services. Grants are a wonderful way to obtain funding for special programs that otherwise would not occur at Scholars' Academy.
-
Do you love to search on the Internet? Do you have an extra hour a week? Looking for volunteers to join the Grant Writing Team. Duties include searching a variety of web sites to identify possible grants for which Scholars' Academy may be eligible. Work from home. Work when you have the time. Work as much or as little as you like - every little bit helps!
-
Reach out to your employer, friends and other networks. Keep your eyes and ears open for potential grant opportunities. Forward us the names and/or web links for any foundations, corporations, etc for which you think we should further investigate for grant opportunities. All ideas are welcomed!
