News about our Staff
Congratulations to: Leigh Ann Smith who has been selected to participate in a week-long seminar entitled "From the British Isles to the Appalachian Mountains: Celtic Traditions in North Carolina." The session is sponsored by the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching in Culhowee, NC. Attendance at NCCAT seminars are highly regarded as a time for in-depth study of a topic, interaction with colleagues from all over the state, and enjoyment of the Western Carolina mountain region.
Anthony Yodice has been selected to be a member of the National Teacher Council of the Bill of Rights Institute in Washington, DC. The National Teacher Council writes curricula for the study of the Constitution, the Bill of Rights and the Revolutionary War period of American history. Mr. Yodice will be spending several days in Washington, DC, working on this project.

DROP OFF/PICK UP NOTES - Parents who are arriving for early check-out of students, please do this at 3:00pm. We request that you do not come to the office to check out students later in the school day because it is very disruptive to classes. We will not be dismissing students at 3:40 since that is when the classes are preparing to leave, and it a security challenge to do this in a safe way at that time. Thank you for your attention to this important information.
We request that you not get out of your car to get students if you are in the pick up lane. A staff member will make sure that your student(s) gets to the car.

STRINGS CLASSES -  start on Thursday, October 2 for students in grades 4, 5, and 6. If you wish to begin string classes, please meet with Ms. Anna Swic after school, 4:15pm on Thursday, September 18 to be measured for your string instrument. For students who have had two years of violin at the school - or through other instruction, Ms. Swic will offer a Master Class for students in grades 4, 5, and 6 on Thursday, after school from 4:00pm - 5:00pm - begin on Tuesday, October 7, for students in grades 3, 7, and 8. The instructor for these students will be Mr. David Strassberg. These students should bring instruments with them. Violins may be rented at Music and Arts stores or from the Violin Shoppe  at 2112 East 7th Street. Students should have these books: 3rd grade and beginning players at grades 7 and 8 - Essential Elements 200, volume 1 for violin and A Tune a Day Scale Book by P. Herfurth; experienced 7th and 8th grade violinists need to bring Essential Elements 2000, volume 2, violin, and A Tune a Day Scale Book by P. Herfurth. Experienced violin students in grades 7 and 8 are invited to a Master Class from 4:00pm - 5:00pm on Tuesday.  These students need the book for 7/8 as above plus Suzuki, volume 1 w/ CD.

gardenPike Family Nurseries Greenback Program

Start saving those receipts and let's begin planting a colorful future for the Scholars' Academy!  Every time you make a purchase at Pike Family Nurseries, it's an investment in gardening materials for our school.  Save Pike receipts and put them in a marked envelope.  Have your child put it in in the PTO hamper in their classroom.   Pike Nurseries will then donate 7% of the purchase value of those receipts back to the school in the form of a Greenback credit that can be used for flowers, plants, shrubs, trees, gardening materials and tools.

harris teeterYou Must Re-link your Harris Teeter Vic Card each Year

Last school year, we had over 100 cards linked to Scholars' Academy, #4075.  So far this year, there are 57 cards linked.  I know there are more of you out there!  School links expire in May of each year, so even if you linked last year, you must re-do it.  Ask a cashier to re-link you at any store, or follow this link to do it online:
http://www.harristeeter.com/community/together_in_education/link_to_your_school.aspx
And remember to ask local friends and family to link to us too.

Thank you for your support in all our fundraising efforts!

Boxtops 4 EducationBoxtops = Big Bucks

Last school year, our PTO earned over $500 through the Boxtops for Education program.  A big thank you to Kim Szentesi-Thomas for counting and sending in all those little guys.  At 10 cents apiece, that is over 5,000 boxtops!  Please cut, save, and send in your boxtops anytime during the school year.  Have your child place them in the PTO hamper in his classroom and we'll take it from there.
Donate Empty Computer Printer Cartridges

Through a local Cartridge World store, we raise funds for our PTO by donating cartridges for recycling.  Just send in the empty cartridges and stack them next to the Cartridge World box just inside the front entrance to the school.  Cartridge World comes periodically to collect them, then sends us a check.  They accept ink jet printer cartridges and laser printer toner cartridges.  Last year we earned approximately $75 through this program.  That was enough to purchase a  Magnetic Field Sensor for the upper level science program, allowing them to "measure magnetic flux and/or the strength and direction of a magnetic field."  So keep those cartridges coming!

carpoolMore School Parking Information
The teachers and students ask that you not park in the undesignated spots along the fence by the field where the basketball hoops are located between the hours of 9:30 am to 3:00 pm on school days. This area is used by students and teachers during PE, recess and lunch.
copperbeanCopperbean Coffee Welcomes Scholars' Academy

Thanks to Cheri and Karl Zottl, owners of Copperbean Coffee, the Scholars' Academy PTO Council has a friendly, comfortable place to meet each month. The first meeting of the PTO Council was held on Wednesday, September 3rd at 9:30am at Copperbean Coffee (located in the Streets of Torrington off of Johnston Rd near Pike's Nursery). The owners and staff were most accommodating to our group of 18!

Meetings for the PTO Council happen the first Wednesday of each month at 9:30am and all are welcome to attend. It's a great way to find out what's going on at the school and enjoy some delicious coffee, pastries or their fabulous granola smoothies.
Again, thanks to the Zottls for opening their doors to our school!
