    ACADEMIC GAMES ACHIEVEMENT

In Equations, our Elementary team won their division and advanced to the playoffs.  They lost in the playoffs and finished 4th overall, (out of 52 teams!!!)  This is the best any of my Equations teams have ever done, and I'm very proud!  Team members are Naveen Paul, Parth Thakker, Nabu Alakkat, Kavi Jain, and Moses Wayne.  Individually, Naveen and Parth finished with near-perfect scores, 23 out of a possible 24.  Our Middle School team, Eric Rabel, Kacie Watson, Grishma Alakkat, Pooja Potharaju, and Patrick Povinelli finished 12th overall.  Eric also had the near-perfect score of 23.

In Propaganda, MRSA rocked!  The Elementary team (Parth Thakker, Rachel Carroll, Moses Wayne, Nabu Alakkat, and Abdel Saymeh) took 1st place and are National Champions!  Individually, Parth and Moses ended regulation play in a 4-way tie for first place.  They had to play off with two others from Florida .  In the end, Parth captured 1st place and Moses 3rd!  The Middle School team (Kacie Watson, Eric Rabel, Grishma Alakkat, Pooja Potharaju and Rogan McKee) took 3rd place overall, with Kacie and Rogan getting individual medals for finishing in the top 10.

We also had two individuals playing Presidents, Rachel Carroll and Moses Wayne.  They were mixed together with students from another school to form a team, and ended up taking 12th place!  Individually, Rachel placed 29th out of 255 students, with Moses just a little behind.

This was our best showing so far, and I think we've really set the ground work for next year.

    Congrats to everyone!

    BOOK EXCHANGE A  SUCCESS

The first ever Scholars' Academy Book Exchange, held the last day of Earth Week, was a success on many levels. It provided an opportunity to clear out old books at home and provide "new" reading material for our children.

And in the spirit of "Go Green", rather then purchasing new books, we "reused" the books we all have. Finally, in the spirit of giving, all leftover books were donated to the Salvation Army Women's and Children's Shelter.

Many thanks to Mary Tayal (Rajan/Rideaux) for organizing the exchange and to everyone who brought in books.

    Happy reading!!

    Proposed Changes to PTO Bylaws

As we near the end of one school year and begin planning for the next, we propose some changes to our PTO Bylaws.  The two primary changes:  First, we are eliminating the requirement of assessing membership dues.  We want all Scholars' Academy parents to be members of the PTO.  Second, we are streamlining the process for filling leadership positions for coming years.  We will vote on these proposed changes at our final PTO general meeting on May 30.  To read the proposed bylaws, go to the PTO section of the school website, and look under the "Minutes and Forms" tab.

    ·        Nothin' Could Be Finer Than To Be In Carolina In the Mor-or-or-ning!

We know that spring has arrived and summer is on the way when there is a front page story in the Charlotte Observer about flying squirrels. This time of year also signals a surfeit of activities for the end of the school year, including North Carolina EOG and EOC tests.  As of today, May 5, there are 23 days remaining on the school calendar. And they are busy days! A new event of the end-of-year school calendar for 2007-2008 is a Dialogue with the Director for parents of new and rising 3rd grade students. The focus of the meeting is a presentation of the administrative plan for our two third grade classrooms for next year. We will also review  curricular expectations for 3rd grade. Please join me for this dialogue on Wednesday, May 21 at 7:00pm in the school multi-purpose room. For information about upcoming activities not listed in the newsletter calendar, please check the What's New page of the website for updates.

Special recognition goes to Ms. Christy Hinkelman and her dedicated corps of parent volunteers for the fine production of "Once Upon a Mattress!" With very limited physical infrastructure, Ms. Hinkelman and the Scholars' Academy actors presented a fine inaugural production for the enjoyment of the school community.

    Thank you Ms. Hinkelman.

    GRANDPARENTS DAY 2008

On April, 17th we held our first Scholars' Grandparents Day.  We had over 150 grandparents in attendance and received wonderful feedback.  Many grandparents left amazed at the work that their grandchildren were doing.  They were so proud and felt very fortunate that their grandchildren had a school like Scholars' to attend.  All grandparents left with a packet including special bookmarks made individually by their grandchildren and Scholars' magnets for their cars.  We look forward to having our grandparents come visit us again in the future!

We would like to thank all the parents who volunteered to be in the classrooms.  We would also like to mention those who put in many hours of preparation for this event.  Kiran Kedar chaired the event with much help from Dr. Peine and the Development Committee including Megan Caplice, Beverly Montgomery, Rebecca Young, Jigisha Gor, Ann Gleason and Cheryl Drake-Bowers.  As many of you may have seen, the multipurpose room was transformed into a beautiful room for the grandparents to gather, eat and socialize.  We would like to thank Susan Scherer and Nilma Amin for all their hard work decorating and putting together the wonderful food tables.  Lastly, we would like to thank the teachers and staff for putting together wonderful activities for our grandparents in the classrooms as well as making them feel so welcome.  The day was one our students and grandparents will remember fondly!

children theatreSchool Musical Hits a High Note

It was a rousing standing ovation for Miss.Hinkelman and the cast of "Once Upon A Mattress" following Friday's evening's spectacular performance. The Scholars' Academy first ever musical with performers spanning second to eighth grade showed the tremendous pool of talent among our students.

Miss. Hinkelman, an accomplished and talented performer herself, inspired the students to give their very best and spent many hours after school directing the cast and preparing for the event.

The Scholars' Academy, thanks to Miss. Hinkleman and the efforts of many volunteers, have successfully brought musical theater to our school. We hope it's here to stay!

    Share your School Photos

As you may know, Scholars' Academy now has an online photo album:

    http://picasaweb.google.com/mrscholarsacademy

If you have some school photos you would like to share, we would love to add them.  Here is the procedure:

    1.  Identify all the students in the photo.

    2.  Verify that we have parental permission to use each student's photo. There is a notebook behind Jan Hargrove's desk in the office with all permission forms.

    3.  If we have permission for all students in the photo/s, send them to our photograph coordinator, Trent Pitts:  tp1953@bellsouth.net.  He will upload them to the album.

If it is difficult for you to go to school to check the notebook, e-mail the names of the students to our newsletter address:  mrscholarsacademy@gmail.com , and one of us will check the notebook for you.

    Recycle
    • GO GREEN !

Earth week was celebrated with enthusiasm through out the school to create awareness in reducing waste, reusing things and then recycling.  Thank you to all, selling the lunch containers, water canteens, kerchiefs, and grocery bags at cost, was worth the effort.

It was very touching to see the young ones share their 25¢ to buy a pencil made of recycled material to save "The Earth".  I wish even we could have this kind of trust. Each one of us can make a positive difference by making small changes in our lifestyle and valuing our resources.

GOAL: Do Not Waste Food, Do Not Waste Water, Do Not Waste Paper, Use Electricity Wisely.

Thank you for the donations, we will be buying an atomic clock in the multipurpose room that would show the outside temperature and inside temperature.  This should get all of us to think before we leave outside doors open or change the thermostat in the school. (Winter setting 68F and summer 78F would be the ideal settings to be an environmental friendly school).

Did we make our goal?   Well, we did reduce our waste to 25lbs (from 35lbs) and bottles to 40 (from 60) per day.  We are on the right track and we will keep taking small steps to be responsible citizens.

meetingAN IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD.....

    Dear Parents,

The Board of Directors has been told that one or more of our families may have falsely claimed to be residents of North Carolina to gain admittance to the Scholars' Academy.  This is not an issue we take lightly, nor can we find any justification for this behavior if it has occurred.  The school was issued its charter by the state of North Carolina for the sole benefit of students living in North Carolina and is funded by the taxpayers of North Carolina.  Anyone determined to be anything but a legal resident of this state will be excluded from further attendance; the board will determine whether further action is appropriate.

We will discuss the implementation of more stringent proof of residency requirements and our policy regarding any parents who may have misrepresented their state residency at our next regularly scheduled board meeting, to be held May 19th at 6:30 PM.  These requirements may apply to incoming and previously admitted students.

We have worked hard to promote a school culture implicitly based on values that include respect, trust and integrity.  We ask for your continuing support as we live by those values, and thank you for the support you have already shown in so many ways.

On behalf of the entire Board of Directors,

    Evan Kettler

    Chair, Board of Directors
