Team Wins First Ever Match, 9 - 1 !

The Scholars' Academy Tennis Team has followed in the footsteps of this year's Golf Team and has brought home a win in a big way. Although, many of the players have never played in a match before we only had one lost match out of ten.  The 9 - 1 winning results play out like this:

First seated Rohan Cotah (Turano) won in a grueling tiebreaker 10/8.  Second singles player Kavi Jain Yodice) pulled out an 8/6 win.  Parth Thakker in the #3 singles match won 8/5.
Forth seated and first time match player JP Flynn (Bolick) stunned the crowd in a shutout win 8/0.
Fifth singles player Rithi Sridher (Bolick) handily won her match 8/4.

Doubles teams in order of Seating:  Rohan Cotah/Kavi Jain won 8/1.  Parth Thakker/Nabu Alakkat (Yodice) won 8/4.  Paul Barnes (Bolick)/Harrish Pudukodu (Bolick), first time players won in a tiebreaker 10/8 and JP Flynn/Rithi Sridher won 8/2.

We are very proud of these players and appreciate Gastiona's St. Michael's fair play and generous hosting.  Thank you to Ed and Susan Flynn for coaching our team; with the assistance of Brit Pair our children have come alive on the courts.  John Watkins' coordination and Janet Barnes' bus driving and enthusiam for the team is very helpful.  The team's next matches are on April 21st and 28th.

BOOK EXCHANGE PROGRAM

As part of MRSA's Earth Week Celebration, the PTO is sponsoring a "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle...READ!" Book Exchange on Friday, April 25th.

This project reflects a true Scholarly nature of MRSA as is educational (supports reading), eco-friendly (recycling) and philanthropic (giving to others less fortunate that ourselves).

To participate all you have to do is:

 1. Clear out your shelves of previously read or no longer wanted books (children, young adult and adult level books accepted)

2.  Bring books to your class the entire week of April 21-25th

3.  Friday, April 25th --BOOK EXCHANGE

4.  Bring home "new" books for summer reading

Books will be sorted for age appropriate reading.  Remaining books will be first offered to teachers for their classroom libraries.  All remaining books will be donated to The Salvation Army Center of Hope, Women's and Children's Shelter.  Therefore, your child may bring home less books that donated to exchange.

The Scholars' Academy celebrates EARTH DAY-2008

Our Earth Day festivities begin on Monday, April 21. Special activities include guest speakers, a film screening, and other activities in individual classrooms. Our celebration continues through Wednesday. Jeff Barrie will be visiting with us at 2:00pm on Monday. Mr. Barrie is the producer of "Kilowatt Ours: A Plan to Re-energize America." The documentary is a call for reducing energy consumption and promoting renewable resources in an effort to improve the quality of life for people in the Southeast. Parents are invited to join us for this special screening and to meet Jeff Barrie. Mary Anne Hitt, executive director of Applachian Voices will be visiting with upper level students about energy production, the earth's resources and environmental leadership.  Dr. John Peine will spend time with lower level classes and talk with them about having a personal relationship with and group responsibility for the earth. Earth Day will feature readings of favorite books about the earth, writing letters to Mother Earth, and Socratic discussions with an earth day theme. Discoverers I are visiting the Recycling Center. On Wednesday, upper level students will see "Nim's Island." We will also release the results of our challenge to the school to reduce the number of plastic bottles used and discarded at school.

HAPPY EARTH DAY everyone.

Our first annual Grandparents was a rousing success. Thank you to our staff and all of the parent volunteers who made this a very special day in the 2007-2008 school year.

News about the Terra Nova2 tests to be administered April 28 - May 1

The Terra Nova2 is a nationally normed achievment test that we administer to students at all grade levels to monitor the levels of our student achievement compared with students throughout the United States. This test is s "local" administration, meaning that it happens only at our school. The Terra Nova2 is used because it has sections in four major content areas that are the focus of our curriculum: language arts, mathematics, science and social studies (as compared to NC testing which has only reading, math and very limited science). Doing the "local" administration allows us to test closer to the level at which the students are learning, so all students complete a test that is one level higher than a typical setting: second graders take a thrid grade test, fourth graders take a fifthgrade test, etc. NC regulations require us to test at the level for which the students are registered, so our students are really covering material they studied in a previous year. NC testing does not start until the third grade. We are interested in student performance as early as the first year that students are with us. The results of the test provide information to parents about student achievement. The results are presented in percentiles. The Scholars' Academy does NOT use test results to make any type of academic decisions about students. We may use the results as a component of our annual curricular review - which areas are strong, and which seem to be less strong. It is important to have children rested and well fed for the days of testing. However, test results are a number which represent only one aspect of who a child is, so it is equally important to find a balance between emphasizing the importance of good performance and the realization that it is a test. If you have any questions about the test, I will be happy to talk with you at any time.

Share your School Photos

As you may know, Scholars' Academy now has an online photo album:

http://picasaweb.google.com/mrscholarsacademy

If you have some school photos you would like to share, we would love to add them.  Here is the procedure:

1.  Identify all the students in the photo.

2.  Verify that we have parental permission to use each student's photo. There is a notebook behind Jan Hargrove's desk in the office with all permission forms.

3.  If we have permission for all students in the photo/s, send them to our photograph coordinator, Trent Pitts:  tp1953@bellsouth.net.  He will upload them to the album.

If it is difficult for you to go to school to check the notebook, e-mail the names of the students to our newsletter address:  mrscholarsacademy@gmail.com , and one of us will check the notebook for you.

Thanks,

Scholars' Academy PTO

A NOTE OF THANKS FROM THE PTOthanks

The Scholars' Academy PTO sincerely thanks you all for your monetary help and valuable support that have made a big difference throughout the school. PTO council members and parent volunteers work extremely hard to utilize the funds very judiciously. So far this year, the approximate number of volunteer hours logged for the school is 1,730. This is equivalent to a full time employee working 9 hours a day over the 188 school days. Please keep in mind; this does NOT include the countless volunteer hours logged on behalf of the school at home, in the classroom, etc.

We are very happy to project the result of your contributions and our hard work.

RecycleSCHOLARS' ACADEMY WEIGHS IN FOR EARTH WEEK

Beyond Recycling:  Putting garbage on a diet
During the week of April 21st, declared "Earth Week", the students of Scholars' Academy take stock of the impact of their aggressive "Go Green Program" implemented this year. Recycling was only the beginning. Reducing waste, reusing items and educating the school community has become the major focus. As demonstrated in the fabulous" Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Skit" by the Student Council at this year's Night of the Arts, the students are very committed to the program.

With the full support of Dr. Peine, the program has gained momentum. Babita Thakker, parent volunteer, has led the way inspiring teachers, staff and students about how to make the three R's (reduce, reuse and recycle) a part of everyday life. What started out as a few recycling bins is now a broader effort to reduce the school's waste, focusing on the lunchroom.  According to coordinator Babita Thakker, "We weighed the wastage in the lunchroom each day for one week and counted the number of bottles in the recycling bin each day. Our average waste is around 35 lbs and average bottles discarded is 60 per day. Our goal is to reduce our lunch waste to half the current waste and reduce the number of bottles thrown for recycling to half."

Every day this week, the lunchroom garbage will be weighed and bottles counted in hopes of achieving the goal. Glancing around the lunchroom, its evident the message is being heard. Reusable beverage containers are taking the place of disposable drink bags. Ziplock bags are being replaced by plastic reusable ones. Even school signs are now being crafted from recycled cardboard. Friday's "Book Exchange" is also keeping with the theme by sharing books within the school community and beyond.

To help promote "reduce and reuse", reusable food and beverage containers will be available for purchase at cost during drop off and pick up Monday through Thursday. Weather permitting, a table will be set up out front for your convenience.

If you have any questions regarding Earth Week, please feel free to contact Babita Thakker at 704-488-4887 or e-mail babitact@yahoo.com.
