Scholars make their mark in math

The Scholars' Academy middle school team (6-8) had an impressive showing in the 2008 Math League Press, a special league where students from schools all over the country test their math ability.

Over 1000 schools participated in the contests recently and the results are in!

The sixth graders placed first in the region and second overall. Top students overall in the league included Kavi Jain, Kevin Rabel and Parth Thakker.

The seventh graders placed first in the region and first overall. Top students overall in the league included Constance Zhou, Kedar Dange and Harish Pudukodu.

The eighth graders placed first in the region and second overall. Top students overall in the league included Eric Rabel, David Wang, Nathan Travers and Pooja Potharaju.

Congratulations to each and every student for this achievement!

New school year brings new opportunities

With only weeks to go until the end of the school year, we are starting to think about getting ready for the 2008/09 school year. The Scholars' Academy has been very fortunate to have very dedicated parents who, in spite of busy schedules, find the time to support our school.

As a charter school, we operate on a tight budget. Many of the tasks we take for granted are done by volunteers, but as the saying goes 'many hands make light work'.

The Parent-Teacher Organization provides the grassroots support for the school. The PTO Officers and Council meet once a month for about an hour. PTO activities include two fundraisers, school socials, teacher appreciation, internal communication, media relations, programs (Academic Games, Spelling Bee, MATHCOUNTS, etc.) and community service (Go Green program). The PTO funds raised provide start up funds for the teachers, classroom electronics, supplies and much more.

Each year, there are opportunities to be a part of this effort and really make a difference. Currently, the PTO is looking to fill two key positions: Vice President and Treasurer.

A few hours each month is all it takes. The PTO is a great group that truly operates on teamwork and lots of humor!

If you would like to find out more about these positions, please contact Beth Gage at 704-366-4310 or e-mail bdgage@carolina.rr.com.

ex.cel.lence\ n  1. the quality of being excellent. The notices are beginning to come to the school. State science fair winners, MATHCOUNTS winners, Math League Press winners, scores from the Apprentice Scholars II from the SAT/Duke TIP program, K-1 state chess champions, recognition in the Letters About Literature program, and the list goes on. Awards are a most visible manifestation of quality accomplishments, but there are everyday examples of excellence throughout the school and throughout the school year: the letters I just received from a Discoverers I class, the maps done by the Discoverers II classes, the marvelous insect projects of the Discoverers III classes, the Socratic seminar sessions of the Investigator I class, and the Astrobiology projects of the Investigator II class. This list shares only a fraction of things that happen at the school, but excellence and the pursuit of it are evident everywhere. We are happy to be able to share some classroom time with the grandparents of our school community on April 18. It is our hope to provide a glimpse of our day to these very special family members.  WELCOME GRANDPARENTS!

Notice Soliciting Nominees for the Scholars' Academy Board of Directorsmeeting

Metrolina Regional Scholars' Academy, a public charter school for highly gifted children located in Charlotte, NC, is currently soliciting nominations for the school's Board of Directors. Three-year board terms will be available beginning in July, 2008. Elections will be held in June, 2008. The Scholars' Academy, which was founded in 2000, serves approximately 215 students in kindergarten through eighth grade and has an annual budget in excess of $1,000,000.

Our school is a rare treasure - one of a small handful of schools in the country that provide, in a self-contained setting, a tuition-free public education specially designed for highly gifted children. Prospective directors must share our passion for schooling and supporting these special young people. In addition, we are particularly interested in candidates with experience in real estate acquisition and facility design, human resources management, or major fundraising (e.g., capital campaigns and endowments).

If you are interested in volunteering your time and talents to help the Board continue building the Scholars' Academy into a model of gifted education, or if you would like to nominate someone else whom you think would be interested in joining the board, please contact Gaston Gage, Nominations Committee; Ann Gleason, Secretary of the Board; Evan Kettler, Chair of the Board; or call the school office.

Scholars' Challenge Update

All tests and spell-a-thon results have been returned home with students.  All students did a fantastic job in showing their knowledge. The race for top fundraising class (K-4) is VERY close based on pledges so returning money will be important for this prize as well as for top individual fundraisers!!!

The spell-a-thon was a success as well (Thanks to Ms. Bolick).  The upper level students raised more money this year with the new format!!!

It is not to late to fill out a pledge form based on your student's results.  Please consider doing this to help support our school.

The deadline for turning in pledge money has been extended to Friday, April 11 due to the delay in returning the results.

Share your School Photos

As you may know, Scholars' Academy now has an online photo album:

http://picasaweb.google.com/mrscholarsacademy

If you have some school photos you would like to share, we would love to add them.  Here is the procedure:

1.  Identify all the students in the photo.

2.  Verify that we have parental permission to use each student's photo. There is a notebook behind Jan Hargrove's desk in the office with all permission forms.

3.  If we have permission for all students in the photo/s, send them to our photograph coordinator, Trent Pitts:  tp1953@bellsouth.net.  He will upload them to the album.

If it is difficult for you to go to school to check the notebook, e-mail the names of the students to our newsletter address:  mrscholarsacademy@gmail.com , and one of us will check the notebook for you.

Thanks,

GO GREEN !

Thank you to all the staff, students and parents for encouraging the children to Reduce Waste, Reuse Products and Recycle. We weighed the wastage in the lunch room each day for one week and counted the number of bottles in the recycling bin each day. Our average waste is around 35 lbs and average bottles discarded is 60 per day. Our goal is to reduce our lunch waste to half the current waste and reduce the number of bottles thrown for recycling to half.

We encourage all:

1.  To reduce waste: Think before discarding, one paper saved per day amounts to 200 papers/day for our school.

2.  For lunch, please use reusable containers and bottles.

3. DO NOT WASTE FOOD.

4. Reduce the waste of water and paper towels in the bathrooms.

5. Buy products made of recycled material.

Each one of us can make a difference even with our small turtle steps!
