Five members of Ms. Turano's homeroom competed in the third annual
Ray's Black History Quiz Bowl, sponsored by Charlotte-Meck Parks and Recreation. Friday, February 15th our team won a preliminary match against
Davidson IB and Northside Baptist. That victory won us a place at the finals on Super Saturday, February 16th at Imaginon. There the team placed
second to Northeast Middle School in a tight race to the finish (it
came down to two questions). Bailey Middle and defending Champs Eastway
also competed in the finals. Congratulations to the team, they did a
great job.

Transportation Update:
The transportation committee is moving to an automated call system for bus emergencies and cancellations. We have had some concerns about parents not getting messages with the phone tree we have in place. if your child rides the bus, you need to pay attention to the system that is now being instituted. Please communicate with Sylvia Triana about the status of the test message that was sent out on February 28. |

Attention Parents of Bus Riders:
The Scholars' Academy School Bus will NOT be in service on Monday, March 10th (AM or PM).
Be sure to make alternate arrangements for your children to and from school on this day!

Dr. Peine's Pen
Giving It All You've Got
Last Sunday afternoon I ventured to the state chess tournament at the Blake Hotel. There were people of all ages (but most of them students) sitting everywhere playing chess. It was great - and the sense of competition was very obvious. Are you aware that Susan Flynn (JP, Bolick) has organized, managed, and other wise whipped into shape the Scholars' Academy Chess Club? We are pretty competitive - our K/1 team won first place in their division, and other individual Scholars' did well too. But the real point of this column is to thank Susan for her dedication to this group. Which then brought me to thinking about all of the things that happen at the school because we have dedicated parents who make a regular committment to be here on a weekly basis, with their skills, to support student interests and growth.
For example, John Watkins (Nick, Bolick & Ian, Rideaux) started our after school sports program. He corrralled George Triana (Victoria, Bolick & Sofia, Rideaux) and Glen Townley (Daniel, Bolick) to help with coaching soccer and we were on our way. Patty Watkins, Sylvia Triana, and Debbie Townley took care of the soccer logistics. This year we added cross country. Russ Van Buren (Mary Catherine, Rideaux % Annika, Lloyd)and Tammra Granger (Alec, Moschel)were here two times a week for practice and matches and we had a team. Joe Povinelli, and for this spring, Heidi Povinelli (Patrick, Bolick & Joey, Pieper) stepped up to coach golf - and we have a golf team. Deb Watson (Kacie, Turano) is here two nights a week to coach our Academic Games League teams. She takes them to national tournaments every year. David Johnston worked with our MATHCOUNTS team and Ms. Pieper gave up her lunch period to coach that group - they are headed to the state tournament. Babita Thakker has single-handedly marshalled the resources to get the school serious about recycling - and we may have been awarded a grant to help us continue that program in a more improved way. There are other people to thank, and I will be sure to do that before the year is out, but I wanted this special group of volunteers to know that we are watching and can't imagine the school without their contributions.
And it goes without saying, but I am going to say it anyway, that the PTO Teacher Appreciation Week leaves us feeling Most Appreciated. The lunch at Cantina 1511 was very, very nice - and even Mr. Ross came. I mentioned to someone from another school what had happened during the week, and I could tell they were envious. Thank you for everything.
For the earth,
Marie E. Peine, Ph.D., Director Metrolina Regional Scholars' Academy

Attention aspiring art students (5-8th grades)
The Mint Museum will offer a special summer session for area youth that will focus on developing a body of work that demonstrates originality and technical skill. This structured exploration of one medium, technique and subject matter in depth will allow the student to develop a portfolio of work which demonstrates a unique personal voice. This class is designed to further develop already fine skills of students seriously interested in pursuing a fine arts career. Class size will be limited to 15 and will be team-taught by area professionals. Young people wishing to attend the class will submit a portfolio of 6-8 pieces of flat work in drawing, painting or mixed media for review by an outside professional juror. Portfolio entries for the review process will be accepted April 18th and 19th at the Randolph Road site. Jury results will be mailed April 23rd. Full refunds of tuition will be made to those who do not make the class.
For more information, please call Karen Vidamo at 704-337-2098. Tuition for museum members is $130 ($150 for non-members). Class runs from July 14th-18th.
