The Scholars' Academy Science Fair

Tuesday, February 12* is Science Fair Day at the Scholars' Academy. Preparations began the middle of September when Ms. Turano handed out science fair packets to all students from Investigators III (Pieper) to Apprentice Scholars III (Turano). Using well articulated guidelines with a supporting timetable of expectations, students undertake a wide variety of original research projects about topics in which they are interested. Student research begins with an examination of literature in the topic of interest, includes class sessions in data collection and analysis, and culminates with the projects you will see the evening of community viewing. Topics vary by category from Behavioral Science through Zoology.

Students will have projects in the gym by 9:30 am on Science Fair Tuesday; projects will be judged from 10:00 am-4:00pm. Some students will be interviewed about their research. Parents and community members are invited to view the projects from 6:00-7:30 pm in the gym. Winning projects will be announced at that time.

*Date of the science fair has been moved forward to Feb. 12.

Grades 5-8 will also solicit pledges from relatives, friends and neighbors, but these students will participate in a spell-a-thon (Thanks to Ms. Bolick).  This year, prizes include cash, certificates and ice cream sundaes!!  Stay tuned for pledge forms to arrive in late Febuary.
Students Shine at Local Academic Games Tournament

Academic Games logo

On Saturday, January 26th, 17 students from MRSA participated in a Local AGLOA Tournament.  This tournament was for two different games - Presidents and Propaganda.  Students participating were from Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic School, St. Patrick's Catholic School, and MRSA.  Success in this tournament qualifies students for the National Tournament, to be held in Kississmee, Florida in April.

In Presidents, Moses Wayne took 2nd place Individual, and Rachel Carroll took 3rd place Individual, qualifying them for the Nationals.  The MRSA team (Moses Wayne, Rachel Carroll, Abdel Saymeh, Devin McKillop, and Joshua Wayne) took 2nd place.

In Propaganda, MRSA swept the field.  In Elementary Division,  Rachel Carroll took 1st place, Abdel Saymeh 2nd, and Parth Thakker took 3rd.  MRSA also took 1st and 2nd place Team honors.  The 1st place team members were Rachel Carroll, Wayne Moses, Parth Thakker, Nabu Alakkat, and Kevin Rabel.  The 2nd place winners were Kavi Jain, Naveen Paul, Sunny Potharaju, Abdel Saymeh, and Joshua Wayne.  Our MRSA middle division (grades 7-8), had no competitors at this event, so there were no team trophies awarded.  In the individual rankings, Kacie Watson took 1st place, Eric Rabel 2nd, and Pooja Potharaju took 3rd.

We still have one more National-qualifier tournament to play, for the Equations game, before heading to Florida.

With 2 of our 3 tournaments completed, the following students have qualified for the Nationals:

Elementary                               Middle

Rachel Carroll                        Kacie Watson
Moses Wayne                        Eric Rabel
Abdel Saymeh                        Pooja Potharaju
Parth Thakker                       Grishma Alakkat
Nabu Alakkat                         Patrick Povinelli
Kevin Rabel

Congratulations competitors and a big thank you to Coach Deb Watson!

Parent's Book Recommendation

Sue Vacek was inspired by "Teach Like Your Hair's On Fire:
The Methods and Madness Inside Room 56" by Rafe Esquith.  The author is a veteran 5th-grade teacher in central Los Angeles.

"This book is entertaining and encouraging.  He has nothing more than very basic resources from the school district - and an endless supply of dedication and creativity.  This book reminds us all how wonderful learning - and teaching - can be, just by paying attention to a few simple, basic tenets."
