· DROP-OFF AND
PICK-UP UPDATE
Drop-off and pick-up have gone fairly well, but we are starting to see some issues that are becoming safety concerns. Please note the following items for your immediate attention.
1. Do not park or get out of your vehicle if you are in the drive-around area in front of our entrance. If you are going to come into the building for any reason, please park in a space in the big lot. This requirement applies to all parents including those who drop off students after 8:55am or do early pick up of students from 3:00pm until dismissal. This restriction applies to both sides of the U drive around space. The only car next to the fence at the large field is that of Mr. Ross, the bus driver.
2. Be mindful of your speed while in the school area. If you are running late, the school parking lot and drop-off and pick-up areas are not the places to make up lost time.
3. Please have your student enter your car/truck/van from the sidewalk side of the drive around - the passenger side of the vehicle.
4. Parents in the drive around who have their children loaded in vehicles should use EXTREME CAUTION when pulling out from behind vehicles that are loading- this is also not the place for speed.
5. Loading at the entrance of the British American School will be restricted.

Charlotte Observer visits Scholars' Academy
This Wednesday, January 23rd, the Charlotte Observer is coming to spend the morning at our school. The visit is part of a large feature on gifted education in Charlotte. The reporter, accompanied by a photographer, will be talking with teachers, Dr. Peine and visiting classrooms all in an effort to find out what makes our school different from other gifted education programs.
This is great exposure for our school and its mission. We welcome the opportunity to show why the Scholars' Academy is the number one public school in North Carolina. |
GO GREEN!
A big thank you to Katherine Pair for the beautiful Recycling Bulletin Board made with all reusable material. We are taking small turtle steps towards a very big goal, the 3 R's:- To Reduce waste not only in our school but to value the thought of reducing waste in all our daily routine. To Reuse products in as many different ways as possible. To Recycle, not only by putting it in the recycling bins but by buying products made up of recycled material.
Our school is large enough to have a positive impact in the society; on the same note it is small enough to reinforce the value of the 3 R's in our program. Thank you to all the Students, Staff and family members for actively participating in this effort. Let us all keep up the good work and please do continue to send suggestions.

Raise the cap, but ...
When the 1996 General Assembly approved the creation of charter schools to provide another form of public schools, it cautiously capped the number of schools at 100.
It was an innovative idea, lawmakers reasoned -- public funding for independent schools that would be free of many but not all the regulations that other schools operate under. But most lawmakers wanted to be sure the new schools worked properly before authorizing more.
The cap was a good idea, but it's time to raise it and allow more charters to open -- if they can show the promise of more innovative learning. That means the State Board of Education must carefully sort through the recommendations of a study commission that last month made a hash of its task of recommending lifting the cap.
