Character Education at the Scholars' Academy---

Unlike most traditional schools we do not have a scripted, required "Character Education" program at the Scholars' Academy. This does not mean that we do not think that the principles commonly espoused in these programs are not important. To the contrary, the development of responsible, caring young people is always a significant aspect of growth. Our informal approach to character education has many faces and forms. In some of our classrooms the class meeting format is used. With class meetings, the objective is to have students recognize and use the qualities of responsible citizenship in the classroom setting. Students may identify social problems and use a decision making process to suggest solutions and consequences for the problems. In other classrooms, the class rules or classroom themes represent the ideals of good character. These themes/rules might include Responsibility, Respect, Kindness, and Do Your Best. Another approach used in some of our classrooms is to identify a Topic of the Month, such as Courage and to conduct classroom discussion based on that theme. Students might even identify a peer who best exemplifies the theme of the month. Our staff believes that being a good role model is an excellent method of exemplary character education. We appreciate all that families do at home to support the development of good character in our students.

Calendar Notice: Registration forms for the Duke TIP 4th/5th grade Talent Search are here. These will be distributed to all 4th grade students this week. 5th grade students who did not register as 4th graders may pick up a form in the office. If your child registered as a 4th grader, you do not need to register again.

Scholars Families:

I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday break.  Now that the holidays are over, we are starting to focus on Grandparents Day which will be held on April 18th.  It is important that we start this early as there are several layers which need to be taken care of.  The first thing that needs to happen is we need to start compiling addresses for all of our grandparents.  Please note that we will not use this list for any other purposes other than sending out invitations for Grandparents Day. For those grandparents who live far away and cannot come, it may be nice to start thinking ahead to see if they can send a letter which can be presented on this day.  We will also have a posterboard up in each classroom for pictures of grandparents who could not be in attendance.  We look forward to an exciting day for the children and grandparents.  Please reply as soon as possible with your grandparent's addresses to kiranarora@hotmail.com

Thank You,

Kiran Kedar

WELCOME COACH K!

This past November, the Scholars' Academy welcomed Coach Bernie Kuebler aboard as the school's new health and physical education teacher. With 20 years of teaching in health and physical education, Coach K, as the students like to call him, brings not only experience, but a whole lot of energy and enthusiasm.

A graduate of Hargrove Military Academy in Virginia, Coach Kuebler thrives on challenge and always trying to do your best. "Kids really want to be educated", says Coach K. "When inspired to do their best, they will.

Coach K spent his first 11 years teaching in high school, before teaching for six years at Charlotte Country Day and the past three years at Carmel.

"I love working with kids", Coach K explains. "I think my enthusiasm with the kids is contagious".

Whether it's games or sports, Coach K likes to engage his students and get them excited about physical activity. Having coached football for many years, Coach K knows firsthand the benefits of working as a team and building confidence.

"One of my greatest memories was coaching and playing football in Italy for two years", he says." It was a wonderful experience."

Married to his wife Robin since 1998, the couple have two children, Nicholas almost six and Elizabeth, four years old.

One behalf of everyone at Scholars' Academy,    welcome Coach K!

GO Green!

http://sheepskinshoes.com/Library/info/ordering_and_policy.htm

2008 will be the year where our school will take the lead in Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.  Thank you to students from Mrs. Turano's class for taking the lead in writing Environmental facts on the Recycling Board (The board next to the refrigerator in the Multi Purpose Room).  Also, look out for some interesting things coming up that board, thanks to Katherine Pair.

If you and your family took any initiatives to reduce, reuse and recycle during the break or planned resolutions which you have started to implement, please take the time to write it and seal it an envelope and put it in the PTO hamper. On the envelope write "Go Green".  We will have a drawing and you may be the lucky one to win a prize.

It is our humble effort to cultivate the habit of reducing waste in our students.  Our sincere thank you to all the staff and students who make it their personal goal to be very active in the 3R's: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle.
