The Perfect Little Job...

no monthly meetings necessary, and it is quick and easy.  The PTO is looking for that parent or staff member that would like to help us spread the word!  Literally, really! We are in need of someone to be in charge of our New Sidewalk Sign!  If you can spell, this is the job for you.  If you can't spell, this job is great practice.

Please contact Janet Barnes, Communication Coordinator at 704.366.3694.

4th Annual Night of the Notables:

For 1 1/2 hours on Tuesday evening, December 18, parents and guests are invited to "rub elbows" with some eminent people. The guest list of "notables" changes each year. Some favorites, such as Albert Einstein have been with us each year. Others are new this year. Becoming a notable person allows students to investigate what producers of knowledge do; what makes them "tick". You will meet notable people from around the world, from all walks of life, and from other eras. Here are some questions you might ask: "What is your most important contribution to your field?" "What was the world like during your time?" "What was the most difficult thing you had to do?" "Are you satisfied with your accomplishments?", and "How would you change your life or the time period in which you lived?" This year our notables in grades 1 through 8 will be available in the gym for your questions. Kindergarten notables will be in their classrooms. Join us for this most enjoyable evening. A brief general PTO meeting will be held in the gym prior to the celebration of our student projects. The event will be held from 6:00pm - 7:30pm.

Thank you to all of the volunteers and our staff who made our two Admissions Open Houses a success. We had approximately 250 visitors to the school on the Saturdays in November and December. Admissions continue to reach out to interested families through Tuesday Tours at Ten which begin December 11 and are held in the multi-purpose room at (you guessed it) 10:00am.

Property Search Update from our Board of Directors

December 7, 2007

Dear Students, Faculty, Staff, Parents and other members of the Scholars' Academy family,

The board of directors has diligently pursued plans for a new facility for many months, with the intention of placing a property under contract and making an announcement as quickly as possible.  Unfortunately, we have terminated negotiations for the property that has consumed our attention for the better part of this year.  While the location was ideal for our purposes - centrally located and mission-supportive - we and the seller recently learned that site conditions were not what we had hoped or expected.  We reluctantly concluded that we would be better served by finding an alternate site.

We continue to actively seek out properties consistent with our stated objectives: to be as accessible as possible to highly gifted children and their families throughout the region, and to be located as close as possible to the educational amenities of the region.  We are in discussions at this time regarding another exciting project in the area surrounding downtown Charlotte and will apprise you of any positive developments.  We are also reviewing our options for interim solutions in the event that our new facility cannot be available in time for the opening of the 2009-2010 school year.

As disappointed as we all may be with the need to resume our search, the board of directors remains committed to finding a suitable permanent home for the school as quickly as possible.  Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Evan Kettler
Chair, Board of Directors

Bienvenidos Maestra Bolz!

Iliana Bolz

We are delighted to welcome Maestra Iliana Ramirez-Bolz, our new Spanish teacher, who brings her love of language and much more to Scholars' Academy.
Born in Venezuala, Maestra Bolz says upon moving to the United States many years ago, she was excited to learn about various cultures and traditions unlike her own.
"The beauty of learning a different language is you also learn about another culture and open the door to new friendships and experiences", says Maestra Bolz.

Before moving to Charlotte two years ago, she lived and worked in Asheville, North Carolina. Working with the Smartstart Program, Maestra Bolz helped design a unique, fun pre-school program called "Sparkle and Shine" to help give preschoolers a foundation in Spanish. The program involves music, storytelling and was a true "labor of love" for her. She describes it as a "beautiful project".

A member of the Latin Music Orchestra, Maestra Bolz loves singing and is inspired by music. Her passion for language, music and culture is a part of her teaching.
"Learning Spanish and other languages is so important", says Maestra Bolz. "It's much more then just learning the language."

In her short time here at Scholars' Academy, she is struck by how quickly the children learn and how they are always willing to try.  " I feel very spoiled teaching here compared to other schools", she says. "The children are beautiful and so good to work with."
GO Green!

We are proud to announce that our Student Council has taken over the Recycling Program successfully. Our sincere thanks to Ms. Montgomery, Ms. Bernard and Ms. Smith to encourage the students in taking the leadership role for this worthwhile program.   For the month of November because of the hardwork of the Student Council Representatives each class has won the "Earth Savers Recycling Bag" .  Now, the teachers will be on look out for all the students that  follow the 3 R's, and we begin our healthy competition for the year.........which class wins the most bags?

Our school can take a lead in coming up with innovative ideas to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. As the school year progresses we will be seeing the Student Council leading us in small steps towards changes to implement the 3 R's: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. Once again thank you to all the RecycleStudent Council Representatives:
Emma Grace Barnes, Jake Otte, Simran Bhatia, Charlotte Pair, Erika Dawson, Kaelan Amin, Ryan Martin, Jeffery Vincent, Amoli Kothari, Tanisha Paul, Maddie Campbell, Cy Pair, Mary Steele, Isabelle Thomas, Charlotte Szentesi-Thomas, Auston Li, Elissa Scherer, Matt Zegil, Kavi Jain, Abdel Saymeh, Amber Adams-Keubler, Will Howland, Aashna Desai and Debanjali Kundu.  Keep up with your great plans for the year!

FACT: Each one of us can do your best in following the 3 R's and start taking inititatives to lead our school in reducing our waste to half of its current wastage by the end of the school year. It will be a great achievement and I am sure Dr. Peine's signature For The Earth, will have an added glow to it!  Thank you Dr. Peine.

Scholars' Academy Students Compete at
Duke Math Meet

On November 17, Aakash, Kedar and I were part of a six person team that represented the Charlotte Math Club in the Duke Math Meet. Our team had kids from East Mecklenburg High, Providence Day School, and MRSA. Many schools from other cities, like Atlanta, Alabama, and Raleigh, also participated in the meet. The competition was pretty tough--our team had to compete with many high-schoolers and we were only in 8th/9th grade. The problems were really hard too. Most of them had mathematical signs that we had never seen before. However, I felt that this math meet was definitely a worthwhile and great experience. This was my second year competing in the meet and though the problems were harder, I did better than the first time I went. The Duke Math Meet was a fun trip and I hope to go again in the years to come.
