Remembering Jane Hagus - On October 11, 2008, Jane Hagus, a long time Todos Santos resident and community activist, died in Las Vegas after a recurrence of cancer.
Last Spring Jane was in Baja for the presentation and signing of her book
"Treasures of Todos Santos." This bilingual book was written from oral histories she collected that celebrated the lives of our local Mexican founding families. As was her past custom of philanthropy, profits from the book were donated to Special Needs Children of the area.
Jane arrived in Todos Santos in 1990, when there were few expatriates, and from the start was an active, creative, charitable, kind women who was loved for her energy, her kindness and for her support of local causes.
I was fortunate to have worked with Jane, travelled with her, cried with her and I mourn her passing far too early.
I have not been informed of any special funds designated to receive memorials in her honor, but I know that she would approve donations for Cancer Research and for sure, programs that address the needs of children of Todos Santos.
Please join me in celebrating the life, far too short, of Jane Hagus and in sharing the loss with her family and friends. - Jane Perkins, United States
Road Conditions - We just drove down the peninsula Monday and Tuesday (Oct. 13 and 14) and it is in EXCELLENT condition. There are a few construction areas (new paving and bridge building) but the rest of the road is very good. South of Mulege and Loreto you could see where there had been mud and rocks washed over the road after the storm but it is all cleaned up now. - Nancy And Tom
Road Report (Courtesy, Baja Pony Express) - From Larry Cornwall in El Cardonal 10/15/08: 11-14 roads cleared Mulege to La Paz. Much repairs and workers on the road-drive slow and careful. Many single lanes but there was not any real water to drive through. Constitution is a mess some roof tops gone, most signs down and water in the streets. On a side note there was a major campaign to clean trash all along the roadside Norte to Sur even moving rusted cars etc. Great news to see this really taking effect.

CFE Electricity Bill. - My recent electricity bill was $1600 (U.S.D.) after having been $40 (U.S.D.) for years. It is physically impossible for my house to have used this much when I have been away. My compadre has spoken w/ CFE regarding the bill but so far no resolution. Has any one else had a similar problem? Any ideas how to approach this? Please let me know. Thanks, John Chiles, johnchiles[-at-]sbcglobal.net, Pescadero
La Pinta No Longer Allowing Pets? (Courtesy, Baja Pony Express) - I just noticed that the former La Pinta hotels, now part of the Desert Inn chain, now state "no pets" in their property descriptions for all of their locations. Has anyone tried to stay at one of the former La Pinta hotels, with a dog, recently? We were planning on driving down to LB this year with our dog and were counting on staying at the various hotels previously known as La Pinta. Any info or suggestions would be welcome. - Val & Jim Murrey, valmurrey[-at-]rockisland.com
Increase in Late Renewal Fines for FM2/FM3 - Immigration is changing their fines for late renewals. Now if you are late in your renewal, the fine could be very expensive, $4,000 to $4,500 pesos. If you are late with your renewal more than 6 months, immigration will completely cancel your FM2 or FM3 document and issue a new one after you pay the fine. - Ivan Martinez, mc_sc27[-at-]hotmail.com, 6123489664, La Paz
Canceling Temporary Car Import Permits (Courtesy, Baja Pony Express) - You cannot cancel your temporary car import permit in La Paz/Pichilingue! Only at border crossings (except Tecate). If you want to leave your car in Baja, you better cross in Tijuana and drive down Mex 1. It's not that bad! That was the situation last April! Need more, contact: wschust33[-at-]gmail.com

Gringo Gazette - Oct. 16, 2008
Serving Baja California Sur, México. The Gringo Gazette is the most widely distributed English newspaper in Baja. Readers number over 38,000 every two weeks. All of them are potential customers for your business here in La Paz.
We have received many testimonials, such as, “This is the only place to advertise and get real results for our business.” This, from Arely Tile.
Beginning in November the Gringo Gazette is including an insert section that will be all about La Paz, with La Paz oriented articles that will promote the city as a destination for North Americans. The goal is to motivate people to come up from Los Cabos, so this will be a great place for La Paz businesses to advertise.
It costs you only about 2 cents to reach each reader, all of whom are potential customers. Cost depends, of course, on the size of the ad. Currently, the Gringo Gazette is aggressively moving into La Paz with more distribution racks.
I encourage you to contact me for information about running an ad in the new La Paz section. There is no other advertising vehicle where your cost to reach your target market is so low. For example, the Directory of Services section is only $16.00 an issue, and The Restaurant Guide is only $2 per line.
Please email or call me for a brief in person meeting, or I can send you a copy of the rates. I can show you how to get the most bang for your advertising buck, help you create your ad, and get the reach and frequency you need to build your business ever larger and more prosperous.
